To Save Gas Drive the speed limit. This will save on gas consumption, plus help you avoid a pricey speeding ticket. Slice Lunch Expenses in Half Simply order sandwich or salad and split it in half with a co-worker. If you save just $1 a dollar a day, this will be $250 by the end of the year. Butter If you butter is too hard to spread, take a vegetable peeler and "peel" off a few shavings, they will spread much easier! Foam on homemade soup Don't worry about skimming it off of the top. Situate the pot so part of it is off of the burner. The foam will move to the cooler side of the pot. Then you can spoon it out all at one time! Doorstops Wrap a rich looking fabric around a brick. Tie the ends with a silky ribbon or tassel. What a pretty doorstop you will have! Used Cans Clean and reuse empty tuna and coffee cans. Simply wrap with wallpaper remnants and you will have pretty desktop holders for your pens, paper clips...etc. Safer Repairs Rub a piece of chalk over your screwdriver the next time you use it. It will keep it from slipping. Make your clothes smell nicer Moisten a few cotton balls with your favorite perfume. Let the cotton balls dry, then tuck two of them in each of your drawers with your clothes to help scent all of your clothes. Help out a friend Why not send a card anonymously to a friend with a $20 bill in it. You never know how much $20 will do for someone who truly needs it. Wall Art For a simple but elegant piece of wall art, frame a beautiful piece of fabric! Shinier Hair Mix your shampoo with a couple of teaspoons of coarse salt and wash as normal. This will remove product build up with the salt's abrasiveness and leave your hair cleaner and shinier. Plastic Containers Are they stained? Rub away the red by making a paste of lemon juice and baking soda. After you make the paste, rub it on the stain. To avoid staining, spray the container with nonstick spray before storing any thing with a red sauce in them. Rubber Gloves To make rubber gloves easier to slip into, sprinkle some cornstarch inside them! Should make them slide right on! Weight Loss Buy blue dishes and serve your meals on them. The color blue suppresses your appetite and you will eat less. Ironing To iron large items such as curtains or tablecloths, spread a sheet underneath your ironing board on the floor. This will prevent the item from picking up dust and dirt from the floor. Creative Lampshade Take small pieces of colored tissue paper and decoupage them to a plain white lampshade for a stained glass effect. Bath Time For a fun bath for kiddies, place a bar of soap into a sock and tie the end. It will keep it from slipping out the little ones hands and make bath time more fun for them (and less stressful for you). Stale Bread??? Revive stale bread by wrapping it in a couple of paper towels. Then microwave for about 15 seconds. Shortening When measuring shortening during cooking, rinse your measuring cup out with water. Pack the shortening in, the shortening should come out without a mess! Clean Hair Utensils In a pitcher of water, pour four capfuls of mouthwash (or use rubbing alcohol). Soak Combs or brushes for 15 minutes. Carefully remove loosened hair and debris. Then rinse and let them airdry. Your Children's Voices Make a tape of your children singing, reading or just talking. Send it to a distant relative or even save it in a memory box to be opened at a later date by your children. I am sure they will love hearing their 6 year old voice when they graduate from high school, get married or even at a baby shower for their own children! Me Time Try waking up half an hour earlier than everyone else in your house. Spend it by drinking your coffee and sitting quietly. Such a simple ritual, but it is precious me time! Burnt Coffee For burnt coffee in your coffee pot, sprinkle table salt into the pot (I use enough to cover the bottom). Then add some chopped up ice and swirl it around. May need to swirl for a few minutes. Then rinse out the pot and clean as normal. Prevent Laundry Snags Many fasteners, especially those found on lingerie, (and velcro) can snag other clothes when washing. Be sure to always close all hooks, fasten all fasteners, and secure all velcro to prevent snagging. Stuck Glasses If you have two glasses stuck together, pour cold water in the glass on top. Then dip the bottom glass into warm water, not hot (this could cause them to crack). Then gently pull them apart. Pillow Shams Instead of running out and purchasing extra pillows to fill your pillow shams, use your extra blankets to fill them. Now they are handy if you get cold in the night! Pet Urine Odors Sal has posted many tips on this as well as Daff! But I just read that you can use Listerine to help with the odors. Use three or four cups of Listerine in a bucket of water to wash the area. (Test in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it won't change the color) Vinyl Tablecloths To remove wrinkles from a vinyl tablecloth that is flannel backed, simply toss in the dryer with several damp towels. Use the lowest setting on the dryer. Check often. When wrinkles appear to have come out, take out of the dryer and lay flat to dry. Candles Want your candles to last longer?? Place in the freezer for 3 hours before burning. Slows down the burning! Homemade Spray Starch 1 cup cold water 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch Mix together in a spray bottle. Shake well before using. |
