How the Candle Burns ~ Candle Divination

Paying attention to how your candles burn, whether during specific spellwork or simply while you are going about your daily routine can offer some interesting insights.  Of course, it is important to note that some candles are poorly made and will burn badly no matter what you do with them (for instance, if the wick is too thick they may produce a lot of soot while burning). Also, the temperature in the area, the presence of wind or a draft, and other external factors may play a part in how candles burn.  So take the following information with a grain of salt, and see if over time you can discover a pattern that fits for you.  

Please note that many candles, especially those that are mass produced and inexpensively made, are hazardous to the environment and harmful to the ozone layer.  Avoid candles that contain petroleum products and other pollutants.  I recommend beeswax or soy candles...they are better for the earth and they smell wonderful!

When you first light the candle, if it emits black smoke it is a sign that it is beginning to remove<O:P> </O:P>

 A strong flame is a good indication. The candle is working by sending out a lot of power and energy to bring about a manifestation of your prayer. This is a sign that the candle is working rapidly.<O:P> </O:P>

A weak or low flame indicates that the candle is working very slowly to remove an obstacle or to bring in a positive vibration to your prayer or spell. You are facing some heavy opposition to having the request granted. It is an indication that you will have to pray a little longer time before your desire is granted.<O:P> </O:P>

A jumping flame can indicate spiritual warfare on your behalf. A lot of raw energy and power is working. If the candle is a war candle, then the person whose name is attached to the candle is fighting.<O:P> </O:P>

If the smoke wafts toward you, the your prayer is acknowledged.<O:P> </O:P>

If the smoke blows in the direction away from you, it is a definite sign that you still need perseverance in order to obtain your desire.<O:P> </O:P>

If the smoke turns toward your right, then you will need to use a bit of patience, success will come through using your head.<O:P> </O:P>

Again if the smoke turns toward you, success will come quickly in granting the prayer.<O:P> </O:P>

At times you will hear crackling sounds as the candles are burning. This is take to indicate that the spirit is pleading your case on your behalf. The stronger the crackling sound, the stronger the opposition is against you.<O:P> </O:P>

If the glass breaks, it can indicate, depending on the situation, that there are some obstacles between you and your goal that need removing. On the other hand, if the work you are doing is to let go of internal blocks and restrictions, then this can literally indicate a breakthrough in your progress.

A speedy, clean burn means things will go well with the spell or blessing and that you will most likely get what you wish for. If a glass encased candle burns and leaves no marks on the glass, that is best. If a free-standing candle leaves little or no residue, that is best.

When a candle burns up very fast the work will go well but it may not last long. Further work may be necessary.

If a free-standing candle runs and melts a lot while burning, observe the flow of wax for signs. For instance, if you are burning a bride-and-groom type candle for love, and the woman's wax runs all over the man's, then the woman desires the man more than he desires her -- or if you are burning a green money candle and the wax melts and runs down onto your monetary offering, then the spell is eager to work for you and the candle is blessing your money. 

Some people try to influence the way melting wax runs; they do this as part of the spell-work, to increase the likelihood that things will go the way they want. Others prefer to let nature take its course and to watch running wax for signs, without interfering at all.

When a free-standing candle burns down to a puddle of wax, examine the shape of the wax; you may see something of importance there; the shape may suggest something to you regarding the matter at hand. For instance, a heart-shaped wax puddle is a good sign if one is burning a red candle for a love spell. Wax puddles come in all kinds of shapes; treat them like tea-leaves when you look at them.
