Leaves
Sycomancy (divination with leaves) was once practiced solely with the leaves of fig trees. However, today it can be used with the leaves of any type of tree provided that they're large enough for our purposes.
Find a suitable leaf. If it quickly withers and dries, the prospects aren't rosy. However, if it remains fresh and dries slowly, the signs are favorable.
A related practice consists of lying beneath the tree and listening to the sound of the wind moving through the leaves to produce prophecies.
Alternately, sit beneath a large, leafy tree when the sun is shining, the sky clear, and a breeze freshens the air. Face west to discover the past; north to the present, and east the future. Ask your question. Watch the shadows created by the sun shining through the moving leaves. Look for symbols and interpret them in accordance with your query.
Leaves are used in other ways. To know if the coming year will be happy or sad, go to a tree in autumn as it is loosening its leaves. Every leaf that you catch in mid-air as it falls portends a lucky week. An alternate version is to stand beneath an apple tree in spring and catch the petals of the fragrant blossoms as they fall. Each petal is a sign of a month of good fortune. This is a rather difficult art; the leaves and petals twist and sway in the wind, and some practice may be necessary before successful results can be achieved.
