Fire-Cleansing Meditation
Sit comfortably, in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and take three deep cleansing breaths, allow the irritations of life and the confusions that clutter the mind to release from within. Allow them to drain off of you as if water were washing over you and taking them away with it. Slow your breathing to a gentle rhythmic pattern and envision a large clearing with beautiful, lush green grass. The clearing is surrounded by hundreds of flowering trees, and off in the distance, the babbling of a brook can just be heard. Take the time to see the beauty in the surroundings before bringing your attention to a huge fire pit in the center of the clearing. The pit is surrounded by gently glowing quartz rocks, unpolished...raw and naturally beautiful from the Earth. In the center, a very small fire has been started but it needs some tending to blaze properly for this effort. There is plenty of firewood in the clearing to choose from, place some on the fire that is already burning to stir it up and allow it to blaze brightly so the sparks from the fire dance up into the air, disappearing from sight.
Slowly begin to dance around this campfire (naked if you so desire, clothed if you are more comfortable that way...no one is anywhere near you, ...no one can interrupt your dance.) If you are listening to music, you can use it to create the rhythm of your dance, if not, just choose some tune that allows you to relax in some manner, but still has a bit of a beat to it. As you dance around the fire pit, the flames dance with you. As you allow yourself to get caught up in the heat of the fire and your dance, bring to your mind the things that bother you in life. Things that you have no control over...anger, and other negative emotions. Bring them to the surface of your thoughts and mull them over a bit before projecting them into the firepit....watch them go up in flames, sparks and smoke. Feel yourself become lighter with less burdening you down. You find yourself dancing faster and faster. The grace comes easily, the steps naturally and the joy that fills your heart as you dance is such that you can take it through your whole life when you leave. Continue to send anything you no longer want into the fire...as each thought hits the flames, they blaze brightly up to encompass that which you are discarding...the sparks rise far into the night sky from the fire...and you see the cares disappear from sight...remind yourself that you are getting rid of the negativity that stands in the way of your own personal and spiritual growth...thanks the gods (of your own choice) for taking away that which no longer serves you, then slowly sink to the ground comfortably. Rest briefly until your breath returns to a very relaxed state, then think of what you wish to have in the place of all the things you've released. Perhaps you want more joy, patience or understanding...as you think of these, feel the heat of the fire gently touching your skin, flushing through you...bringing to you that which you desire. As the heat surrounds you, it brings a peace within that settles deeply, stays within for you to carry over into your normal day to day life. Turn your head towards the woodpiles you used to build the fire, and you will see a small backpack...if you look within, you will find an offering to give to the fire, in gratitude..that offering might be incense, or any number of things, something you feel is appropriate. Take this out, take a deep breath, think of how thankful you are to be at peace and gently blow into the offering, projecting that gratitude into it...repeat twice more before walking back to the fire pit and adding this gift to the flames...as you do, see the flames turn many different colours as they accept your thanks.
Lots of greens and yellows and reds, blues and oranges dance up into the flames, mingling...disappearing in the sparks above the flames, and you know within that your prayers and offerings have been heard.
Walk around the fire pit clockwise, thinking of how much better your life will be now that you have rid yourself of that which stands in your way to progress....as you return to where you started walking, you see a path leading out of the field into the forest.
Walk the path...seeing the beauty that surrounds you...it leads you back to the here and now...to the present... Breathe in deeply and smell the forest scents....as the forest breaks, you step out into another clearing, much smaller than the first one...this clearing is the connection to your "now" moment...breathe in deeply, and return to the here and now, KNOWING that you are better for that which you have released. Your body is full of energy and your mind is calm and you are well centered.
As you open your eyes, you realize that you can return to this clearing and the fire pit any time you feel the need to rid yourself of the negativity in your life. With gratitude in your heart, return to the here and now accepting the healing you have begun for yourself and know that you are a better person for it!
