Moon Magick and Corresponding Lunar Phases
Dark or New Moon
Various magick practitioners disagree on many things relating to the Dark Moon or New Moon. However, they do agree on three things. These are:
1. The New Moon occurs during the period between the Waning Moon and Waxing Moon Phase.
2. It belongs to Crone energy.
3. Even though the moon is not visible during this time, she is still giving off energy.
Magickal themes during this time also are varied because of the various beliefs. The New Moon has two energies, which are the crescent moon and the New Moon. However, the accepted magickal correspondences for this moon phase include the following:
Truth
Discovery
Self improvement
Gardening by the Moon
Health
Solutions
Feminine strength
Business dealings
Balancing of emotions
Projects that need a change
Waxing Moon
This energy belong to the Light Maiden and occurs when the Moon grows in the sky from new to full. The Moon gains power during this time, so it is a good time to perform spells that require an increase or needs new energy or momentum. Thematic spells would include the following:
Fresh or new start
A victory
Addition to your life of something new
Employment
The Waxing Moon is also divided into two phases and energies. These are called the First Quarter Moon and the Gibbous Moon. The First Quarter Moon occurs between seven and ten days after the New Moon. This is a good time to do an addition or increase spell.
The Gibbous Moon occurs ten to thirteen days after the New Moon and is good for self improvement.
Full Moon
This energy is the Mother Goddess. The Full Moon Cycle, some believe, last three days, including the day before the full moon and the day after. Full Moon energy can be channeled into any spell, meaning that its energy corresponds with all magickal themes.
Complicated spells or rituals will receive an extra boost as will simple spells, making them more powerful. Full Moon Esbats are more pwerful when associated with the theme of the full moon for the month. This energy will rule during the spell or ritual. To increase the power of your spell or ritual, check the correspondence for candles, planetary influences, days of the week, goddess festivals, etc. All of this will give your spell or ritual the boost along with the energy of the moon.
Black Moon
A black moon does not occur often in a lunar calendar, however it can. What is a black moon? The Moon can cycle thirteen times during a twelve month period. This means that moon phases of the same type will appear in the same month several times each year. When the repeated phase happens to be the Dark or New Moon, the second occurence is called the Black Moon.
The Black Moon is corresponded to the following energies:
Soul Searching
Inner journey work
Divination
self realization
Blue Moon
Many people believe that the Blue Moon is the second full moon to appear in one month. This has been found not to be true. The Blue Moon is actually the third Full Moon to rise when four Full Moons appear within the same season.
Lunar Eclipses
This event is the most magickal of all the moon phases. It provides the solar and lunar energies at the same time. Due to the light dark aspects of the eclipse, it is a reminder of the birth death cycle. The energy associated with the Lunar Eclipse is the following:
Blaanced
Cohesive
Strength
Financial goals
Protection against poor health
Changes of personal reality
But, what if you can't wait for the next moon phase and need to do a spell immediately? Not to worry. As long as you can change the wording of the spell for the correct moon phase, the spell can be done. For example, if you need money and the moon is waning, change the wording of your spell to decrease debt or personal poverty. If the moon is waxing, include in your wording something about increase or bounty or abundance. In this manner, the spell becomes your work and is more powerful. Adding your own energy, either through words, dance, music or correspondences will increase the strength of spells, especially if performed during the corresponding lunar phase.
