Greek Creation Myth

Z44:

In the Beginning

In the beginning their was only Chaos.  Chaos was a dark and silent existence.  After Chaos Gaea the earth came into existence.  Gaea was to become the immortal loving mother of the gods and humanity.

Gaea had a son who was named Uranus.  Uranus who was heaven covered the entire world with his form.  Gaea and Uranus  had many children bringing forth more immortal gods.  These gods were the Titans, the Cyclops, and the hundred hands.

Uranus feared his children as he believed that one day they would attempt to take his throne.  Every time Gaea would have a child Uranus would take it and bury it in the depths of Gaea, the earth.

Geae wept for her children and where they had been placed.  Gaea decided that she had to revenge the cruelty that Uranus had perpetrated on their children.  One night as Uranus was sleeping low upon Gaea, Gaea took her son Cronos out from her depths.  Gaea gave Cronus a sickle and told Cronus to wound his father with it.

The great Titan Cronus arose from his mother without fear, attacking Uranus Cronus wounded him with the sickle.  The god Uranus wounded by his son poured out great amounts of blood from his wound.  The god became so weakened that he rose high above the earth,  never  to reach low onto Gaea (the earth), again.

As the blood of Uranus fell onto the earth and mixed with the soil it brought forth the Giants, the Nymphs, and the Nereids.  At this time the waves lapped over Gaea creating froth as one drop of Uranus's blood mixed with the  froth the goddess Aphrodite was born and came into existence. The god Cronus then became ruler and god of the entire world.

Zeus and Cronus

The god Cronus then became ruler and god of the entire world.

The god Cronus took as his wife the Titan Rhea after defeating his father Uranus and taking his throne away from him.  Cronus placed his throne on Orthri and governed the entire world from this mountain.

Cronus just like his father feared his children, he knew what he done to his father,  and feared that his children may do the same to him.  In such, every time Rhea would have a child  Cronus would swallow it.  In this manner Cronus swallowed many of the 12 future gods of Olympus, they were Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia, and Poseidon.

Rhea grieved for her children and the fate that befallen them as a result of her fearful husband.  Rhea then decided that her next and last child she would hide from her husband.  When the day came when she was to bare a child she left secretly from her husband and went to the island of Crete.  In a cave on the island  of Crete far from Cronus's hands she bore her son and future king of the gods Zeus.

Rhea then returned to her husband  bringing with her a rapped rock as a child.  Upon returning to her husband Cronus thinking that the rock was her child immediately swallowed it, and did not know the better that he in fact swallowed a rock.

The Nymphs had been placed guardians of Zeus by Rhea, and under their protection he quickly grew into a powerful god.  A goat know as Am althea would give Zeus milk, and the bees would bring him honey,  most of which they brought from Ambrosia the ends of the world, an eagle would bring Zeus nectar so he could drink.  In this manner Zeus grew quickly and became very powerful.

When Zeus had come of age and could challenge his father his grandmother Gaea gave him a herb which he could give his father Cronus.  Zeus then went to the mountain Orthri and gave his father the herb, Cronus then threw up all his children.  First he threw up the rock, and then one by one all the remaining five children.

Zeus and his brothers then decided that they would fight Cronus and topple him from power.  They went onto Mount Olympus and decided that this would be their home.  From Mount Olympus they would lead their fight against their father.  With the gods of Olympus went three Titans to offer their support.  Everybody else remained with Cronus, some out of fear, some out of support.

A war then started between the gods of Olympus and their father, "The War of the Titans" which lasted ten whole years.  Massive rocks would be thrown from one mountain to the other, and for ten whole years the earth was rattled by one earthquake after another.  In the end, Zeus won the war by striking his opponents down with his lightning bolts, and then throwing them on to the Tartarus Mountains.

As time passed Zeus had a falling out with his grandmother Gaea.  Gaea sent the giants against her grandson Zeus in "The War of the Giants", but just like the previous war they completely failed and were defeated by the gods of Olympus.  Zeus struck the Giants down with his  lightning bolts as he had done in the preceding war, and threw them as well on to the Tartarus Mountains.

Zeus then became the unquestioned ruler of the Gods, ruling from Mount Olympus with his entourage of eleven more gods.

The Story of Mankind

Originally man lived in the depths of the dark caves of the earth and did not dare venture out. The gods of Olympus decided  to bring man out of the caves of the earth, into the light.  The gods asked Epimetheus the son of a Titan to grant mankind strength, weapons, and gifts which would allow them to live in the outside world.

Epimetheus gave all the animals weapons (i.e. teeth, hooves etc), and arranged how they would live amongst one another.  Epimetheus did everything with wisdom which resulted in the creation of harmony and balance in nature.

Epimetheus was so occupied with the other animals that he forgot about mankind.  The end result was man was left without strength and means of defense.  Surely mankind would have died in the outside world if nothing was done to help them.  Mankind would clearly need to be defended by the gods, otherwise they would perish in this new world they were brought into.

The brother of Epimetheus, Prometheus felt pity for mankind and felt that they should not die for an action that was out of their hands.  Prometheus wished to make mankind resemble the gods and decided that he would do all he could to help them.

In the hands of the gods rested fire.  Prometheus stole from the gods some of this holy fire that belonged to them, and hid it in a hollow log.  He then brought this fire to mankind, which they used to survive.

The god Zeus was enraged at what Prometheus had done and punished him severely for it.  He tied Prometheus with large chains onto the side of the Caucasus mountains.  Every morning an eagle would appear and eat the liver of Prometheus which would grow back at night. Prometheus could not die as he was an immortal, and therefore was cursed by Zeus do undergo this torture forever. After many centuries his torment finally came to end when the hero Heracles (Hercules)  freed him.

Humanity prospered as a result of the kind action of Prometheus. Mankind managed to overcome all its' fears and progressed rapidly.  However, with the loss of fear also came a loss of virtue for mankind.  Mankind became disrespectful to the gods wicked and unlawful.  Zeus then decided that it had come time for man to be destroyed.

Zeus decided that it would not be just for all mankind to be destroyed but only the wicked.  He searched far and wide and found only two people that were virtuous.  These two virtuous people were Devkolionas the son of Prometheus and his wife Pira.  Zeus told Devkolionas to create an arc  and enter it with his wife, as soon he would enter the arc with his wife Zeus would create a flood which would destroy mankind.  When the arc was complete and Devkolionas and his wife entered, Zeus opened the gates of heaven and poured so much water that all the land became sea and all humanity except the two honest souls were destroyed.

Nine days and nights the arc sailed above the water.  When the water subsided the arc came to rest on the great mountain of Parnassus.  Devkolionas and his wife then came out and gave glory and homage to the god Zeus for saving them.

Devkolionas and his wife quickly became depressed as they were the only two people alone in a very large world.  The god Zeus saw them in their loneliness and pitied them.  Zeus told them to collect as many rocks as possible, and to though them behind themselves as they walked.  When Devkolionas threw a rock it turned into a man, and when his wife threw a rock it turned into a woman.  In this manner a new generation of mankind was created.

Devkolionas and Pira had a child of their own by the name of  Ellina "Greek" and several other kids, mankind is said to have descended  from these children.
