In truth there is no way to lump our people together. At one time there were over 500 Nations, all distinctly different. America as She exists today, holds the melding pot theory in prominance. To be an american, you give up all other specific identity. I am not a native american. I am Indigenous to this country and I am Cherokee. This government refers to me as Native American to take away who I am and blend me into a group they wish would disappear.
If I let go of my culture or forget what my people's traditions are, then they succeed.
This is why the People get so angry when the eclectics/New Agers say they follow a Native American Path. They want you to choose the way of one tradition and follow it - not blend anything and everything into one. Do you understand?
Totems were a Northwestern people's tradition.
All Peoples learned from the animals. They did not all call them spirit guides. Vision quests were not done by all People's, though there were coming of age ceremonies in most Tribes. It was most important to learn from the Elders - and not everyone was deemed worthy to be taught - especially those outside the Tribe.
The women did not do ceremony when they were on their Moon (monthly cycle) NOT because they were unclean, but because their power was so strong they canceled out the energy called for by the ceremony. The women were honored in the way of the People. It was not until Christianity was blended into our ways that the men became most important or the BOSS.
I think the lakota people's ways are what most identify with as native american. You see posts signed with AHO - and it means "it is so" - my Cherokee friend told me it meant LOUD or drumming mouth! lol it is all in the perspective.
There is a sweet movie called "The Education of Little Tree" and another called "Medicine River" - Both are good for the soul. In Medicine River, you get a sense of Cherokee humor.
I hope this is helpful. I am happy to answer any questions I can.
