Humility: this is talked about and is known to the Tsalagi as All is One, That we know very little compared to the One who is all. so we should never act as if we have all the answers or cannot be taught anything. We are to present ourselves to others but especially the Elders as humble.
Respect: We are taught that we respect all people, that we never diminish others and raise ourselves above another. We must learn to respect ourselves first. As a little one I was taught how to treat a dog. We talk to them, we meet their needs and we learn to respect the dog. To the Tsalagi the dog was respected for it is a loyal and trusting creation of the Great Spirit and demonstrates unconditional love. I remember being struck by the difference in other tribes in the west where the dog is not sacred or respected the same way and it is a tradition to have soup and be served the head of the dog. We were told these differences not to pass judgement but to show tolerance and respect for the beliefs of others .
Honesty: This begins with and within ourselves. We must above all respect and honor ourselves. Unless we first recognize who and what we are, we learn to be honest with ourselves so we can be honest with others. We sit under the tree and think about who we are, what we are and why we are here. As AniYvWiya we were taught we are not a subgroup of any other tribe. we were not just NDN's we are different we are AniYvWiya. The principle people who came from a different place. we did not have to learn if we came from Siberia, or the lost tribe of Israel, or the Bearing Strait. We knew where we came from, We came here with a long history.
Love: .We are to demonstrate unconditional love , a Divine love for each other. We are not to judge another, gossip or speak badly of another. There is a protocal and "right way" to handle things that happen in the Tribe and it should all be handled with love at the forefront of all decisions. We must always consider the good of all before we act. As AniYvWiya we understand that to utilize unconditional love is the ultimate power. We can destroy relationships when ego is allowed to interfere with love. It is knowing that love is given freely or it is not true love and we must contemplate being open , honest and loving.
Bravery: This is taught as surrender. We surrender personal will to Divine Will. It may be something we don't want to do and we may be hurt in doing this but if it is the will of Creator then we surrender our ego and wants to the All.
Wisdom: We are to seek only what is truth and look for service to others. This gives us the wisdom to know right from wrong and learn responsibility and understanding the results of our actions.
Truth: This is the connection to the All. This is when we live in the present moment and learn truth, illusion from reality. We as AniYvWiya must walk with truth, live in truth and speak our truth.
As a person stands around the fire that represents the eternal fires of our Ancestors. Each of these teachings is shared and the person tells how they learned or are learning these things in the context of family relationship and after each one tobacco is offered.
This ceremony gives the person a chance to stand before their family and learn to be open and honest and it gives those listening a chance to learn how the family member is growing. It was like a graduation ceremony. It was a barometer for growth and understanding. it gave the Ukus, GhiGau and Clan Mothers a chance to know where teaching may have to be reinforced and counciling could take place . Learning comes full circle and the children and young ones get to see how the adult is in the process of learning all the time.
All ceremonies are for the continuance of the unity of the family.
