Lesson 2-page 1
    The athame, a witch’s ceremonial knife, if the most important Witchcraft tool.
    safety warning: Everything you learned about knife safety applies to an athame. An athame is sharp and dangerous. Always practice knife safety with your athame. If you don’t know knife safety, learn knife safety before you handle or use an athame.
correspondences of an athame
    There is honest disagreement among Witches as to which element the athame corresponds with. Some Witches believe that the athame corresponds to the element fire. Some Witches believe the athame corresponds with the element air (and the direction east). Experiment and see which works best for you personally, but honor the right for other Witches to honestly have a different choice.
    The athame is considered to be a phallic tool and therefore of masculine element and male energy.
    In many Witchcraft traditions the athame must have a black handle (white handled knives being reserved for cutting). If you don’t belong to a restrictive tradition, then you can have an athame with any color handle (although many Witches want an athame with a black handle anyway).
    It is your personal choice how decorative the handle is. ManyWitches personalize their athame handle with magick symbols, magick writing, and other decorations. Some Witches keep the athame handle plain so that non-Witches won’t realize there is anything special about it.
    You change an ordinary knife into an athame through a consecration ritual. This can be a newly purchased knife or a keepsake you’ve had for years. You might find great knives or daggers to use as an athame at swap meets, flea markets, antique stores, New Age festivals, or Renaissance faires.
purification of an athame
    If you purchase a used knife you will want to purify the knife of any bad karma or negative vibrations from previous unknown owners. One easy method is to expose the knife to direct sunlight for at least one hour a day for the full cycle of the moon, usually starting at Full Moon or New Moon. This can be by placing the knife inside a window (to prevent possible theft). Other purification methods include water, alchohol, salt, crystals, and herbal smudgings.
    Some Witches believe that an athame should never be purchased, that either you must make your own tools or receive them as gifts. That probably worked fine in ancient times, but how many people know how to make their own knives nowadays?
    A gift athame is considered a great honor. The athame will have all the energy of years of use by the previous owner. That energy can help guide and empower your own magick, merging your magickal energy with the magickal energy of the Witch who gave the gift. Obviously you don’t cleanse out the previous energy from a gift athame (in this case, you want that energy to stay in the athame).
    Once the knife has been purified (you can skip this step if you or someone you know has owned the knife for years or if you purchase a new knife), you may have a consecration ceremony.
consecration of a sword
    Consecration: When you finish choosing or making an athame, you will want to dedicate it to magickal work. You may create your own little ceremony that dedicates the knife for sacred use and transforms it from an ordinary knife into an athame. The ritual should be short and simple: place the tool on the altar, cast a circle, and perform a shrt ritual to consecrate the tool.
    A brief ceremonial purification and cleansing of previous mundane uses migh involve mixing a small amount of salt and water in a chalice or bowl and then sprinkling the tool. This is just ceremonial purification. If the tool needs a complete purification, then this should be done before the consecration ritual.
    You will probably also want to recite a short poem about the knife being transformed into an athame. One, two, three, or four lines are plenty. It doesn’t have to rhyme unless you want it to. Some Witches directly speak to the new athame.
    Eileen Holland suggests the simple phrase “Knife, you are brought into this circle of transformation to be forever after my athame.?BR>    If you have a permanent altar, you might leave your athame on your altar for 24 hours after your ceremony before making use of your new athame. Any of the Sabbats or New Moon or Full Moon are particularly appropriate times to dedicate a new athame.
    Feel free to submit JPEGs of your personal athame. Indicate the materials, symbols, deity, Witchcraft tradition, or other special information that may help understand your athame.
naming athames
    In some traditions (especially Nordic, Teutonic, or Germanic) the athame is given a ceremonial name. Sometimes this ceremonial name is carved into the handle in runes or magick writing system. There are many examples of European knives and daggers inscribed with runic names by shamans of Odin. You may optionally invoke the name of Odin or any male deity to empower the consecration.
uses of an athame
    Uses: There are many uses for your athame:
    Casting the circle. Most WItches use their athame to point out (or mark) the borders when casting their circle. Some Witches use an athame for most circles, reserving wands for casting circles of special significance .
    Drawing lines. There are many rituals that call for drawing a line. Sometimes the athame marks an imaginary line in the air. Other times the athame actually draws a visible line in something material, such as dirt or salt. Sometimes a line is carved into an object (amulet, talisman, tool, etc.).
    Mixing. The athame is the most common tool when used for mixing salt and water or mixing potions. Pick up ingredients with the point of your athame. Proportions may be measured out on the tip of the blade. The tip of the athame may also be used for stirring.
    Charging. The athame may be used when consecrating, charging, or empowering amulets, talismans, or poppets.
    Setting limits. Often you will have a ritual where you are magickally setting limits of some kind. You can use the athame to ceremonially mark the limit.
    Making choices. Some traditions use the athame for making choices and carrying them out.
    Some Witches believe that the athame should only be used inside a circle, while other Witches believe that the athame can be used as an ordinary knife outside the circle. During the Burning Times, Witches had to hide their Witchcraft tools in plain sight (which is why every Witchcraft tool other than a sword looks like an ordinary kitchen utensil).
other
    You want to be careful about who else touches or handles your athame. Magickal tools are sensitive and will absorb the energy of anyone who touches them. Some Witches don’t let anyone else touch their athame. Some Witches will allow member of their coven, their family, and close friends to touch their athame.
    If someone touches your athame, you can smudge it with sage. Light a sage leaf on fire, then gently blow out the flame, leaving a bright red burning ember. Wave your athame through the sage smoke. This will cleanse out the energy from the unwanted touching without driving out all of the positive magickal energy you’ve built up in your athame (a complete purification would get rid of your magicakl energy as well). You can also sprinkle a small amount of salt and water, as described in the consecration ritual above.
    A knife that has been used as a weapon shouldn’t be used as an athame. If a knife has ever drawn blood, it must be purified before it can be consecrated as an athame. If you ever accidently cut yourself with your athame, you will want to smudge with sage, sprinkle with salt water, or otherwise symbollically purify it.

Lesson 2-page 2
Balance and Witchcraft
I felt this page was very important concerning Witchcraft.
All information below is taken from various chapters within my book
The Journey into Witchcraft
Which color are you:
White Witches, Black Witches and Grey Witches. Witchcraft bears no color and the whole concept this stems toward is good verses evil; this bears no place within The Craft. Witches are balanced human beings, and the color association tends to fall towards the concept of heaven and hell or good witch/bad witch which completely eludes my rational thinking. A Witch is a Witch. None of us are perfect for we are human and in such we all have good and bad within us. We are a part of nature and in such we all screw up at times!
Fluffy and Witchcraft:
Witchcraft is not fluffy. This whole concept of fluff is ridiculous. Nature is not one-sided and so Witchcraft is not either. I get tired of seeing people hopping around spouting off about love and light. At what point did "true nature" become less focused upon. Nature can be soothing and calming but it can also be treacherous. This is the reality; you will learn so much more when you are faced and open to both. I have been to both sides and yes, they are different but I learned from both. The dark is not "evil" I think this concept to be ridiculous and the concept of evil we must remember is not a Pagan concept. People tend to forget that the deities in which we honor and believe reside within the whole of all planes. Therefore, only focusing upon one aspect and completely forgetting about the other is not balanced and makes no sense to me.
Magick and the dark side:
Magick is natural; the forces of nature make the magick happen. To expose one side of magick without explaining the importance of the other side is a completely inaccurate way of thinking. Some forces within the realm of magick are light and some are not. The very thought of placing no emphasis on the balancing factor completely distorts everything that we believe. Balanced thinking creates a very powerful person.
The dark side of magick is not some dirty little secret. I would strongly suggest to people whom deny the forces to open your eyes to the truths that reside within The Craft and Mother Nature. The Ancient Ones used this type of magick and believe me they were far more educated and informed than we as modern day Witches are. Ancients not only knew of the great powers that reside within the universe they lived within the realm of magick each day of their existence. They were not one sided they were open to all aspects within nature. This I can assure you?BR>The Dark Side of the Craft My personal journey into understanding:
As I walk within the darkness, I feel the power surge;
Speaking to the underworld, I can feel the love emerge;
Compassion resides within the dark, a caring God I see;
I am seeking to understand it all; as he gently speaks to me;
From whence you came, you have now returned to the depth of your soul;
Wisdom comes to those who seek the truth that resides within the whole;
Balance resides within the great realms; speak the truth you must;
You seek the truth and understand the depths; I feel your inner trust;
Closed eyes will gain nothing from within the true ways;
You are walking within both worlds each and every day;
We seek not to cause fear; for that is not our means;
Yet many only experience us within the night, within their dreams;
Your path has led you here; you seek to learn something new;
Many embark upon this journey, yet I speak with only a few;
You come not for personal gain; yet you seek only to understand the love that resides here;
Within your heart you knew our ways; I have felt your pain and have seen your tears;
Evil is not within our realm; ugliness comes from within and beauty as well resides there;
My outward appearance is of no importance, for you can feel what's inside of me and you know that I care;
You see with open eyes and you look deep into the soul;
I know your path for it is great; you shall attain your ultimate goal;
Wisdom comes to only a few, the eyes must remain open. For it is a gift that is given to only the hearts of the true;
Many lay claim to know us and title themselves as such; Hear me now and understand we know only but a few;
I ask for a message; that I may tell to all in whom I speak;
Give me you words for you know my heart and you know what it is I seek;
"Darkness is but an outward appearance and love encompasses all;
Fall not upon the lies and listen only to the ones who are truly called";
"For within the light you shall find the dark and from within the dark you shall find the light;
For all has a purpose and is required; for as with each day you shall have the night;"
The previous is an overview of my journey into the dark. I was given a great understanding of the dark on this day. I strive to assist others in understanding what I encountered. The dark is not about evil, for if you remember our own teachings we do not believe in the concept of pure evil; we must remember where the "good verses evil" concept came from and I can assure you it was not The Old Religion.

Lesson 2 - page 3
Casting a Circle
The purpose of the magick circle according to most witchcraft traditions is to raise magickal power; to create an area to serve as a passageway to the spirit realm and to contain and focus the energy you are creating through casting the spell to make it more potent. There is also an element of protection to the magick circle: By casting it, you are ensuring that no malign forces can penetrate and affect the outcome of your spell.
A simple way to cast the circle is to first clean the area—some people even have a special broom they use only for ritual purposes. They ritually sweep the energy field of the area smooth and clean of negativity. Then set up the altar and light the incense. Then walk the circle three times clockwise carrying the censer in your hand (this practice is called three-fold circumlocution and comes from the Medieval European tradition of High Magick). As you slowly walk the circumference of the circle, focus and visualize a luminescent white light which extends above the circle into space and below into infinity. As you walk the circle, incant,
"I conjure You, oh Circle of Power, to be a rampart and protection against all malign and negative forces. May You be cleansed of all impurities. May this Circle preserve and contain the Power I/we raise within."
Use your athame or your index finger to draw a pentagram to invoke The Elements. Incant,
"I invoke You, oh Elements, Creature of Earth, Creature of Air, Creature of Fire, Creature of Water. I invoke You, spirit, Great God/dess, I invoke You. Be present here. Smile upon your priest/ess."
Then move your athame or index finger around the outer limit of the circle counter clockwise and incant,
"This Circle is open. So mote it be."

Calling of the Quarters
 Enter a meditative state placing your mind in a serene, receptive state but still focussing on the purpose of the ritual. When it feels right, proceed to the North Quarter, place a dish of salt there and incant,
"I summon You, oh Creature of Earth, as I light this candle, I summon You. Bring power and strength to my spell."
Then proceed to the East Quarter and place the censor there. Incant,
"I summon You, oh Creature of Air, as I light this candle, I summon You. Bring power and strength to my spell."
 Proceed to the South Quarter, light the candle and incant,
"I summon You, oh Creature of Fire, as I light this candle, I summon You. Bring power and strength to my spell."
Proceed to the West Quarter. Place the water dish down and incant,
"I summon You, oh Creature of Water, as I light this candle, I summon You. Bring power and strength to my spell."
Consecrating your Athame
The athame is a witches' own personal symbol and represents his/her magickal identity which is why its consecration is an integral part of initiating oneself into the craft.
Any knife which feels right to you can be chosen as your athame. My own athame is made of steel and has an ornate black hilt. The black hilt is the traditional way to go with the athame but again it is whatever feels right to you that is best. If you find an athame that appeals strongly to you that isn't black-hilted, then that's the one you should choose. You should spend some time picking your athame. Don't just do a slipshod job of it in an effort to save time. The athame is one of the most important tools a witch can possess and as I've said it is a symbol of your identity as a witch so don't be lazy! When you find a knife that appeals to you deeply, then that is the one you should choose.
When you have found your athame, arrange to do this consecration ritual during the time of the waxing moon. Have some incense ready to burn. Incense has been used since ancient times to aid in carrying your prayers to the astral plane. Frankincense is a particularly good one to use for this ritual as it brings special blessings from the gods. Sandalwood can also be used as it is a good, all-purpose incense.
You should also have a bowl full of salt and a white candle. White is the colour of new beginnings and symbolizes the new phase you are entering. It is also symbolic of psychism and provides a link with the astral plane. You should also have a chalice or cup filled with water. (Springwater is best.)
Cast the Circle. Place the athame on the floor in the centre of the circle and sit before it facing North. Then perform The Calling of the Quarters.
Enter a state of communion with nature and the elements. Visualize the purpose of the ritual. When the time is right, pick up the athame and take it to the North Quarter, raise it to the heavens and say,
"I consecrate you, my athame, with Earth, that you may provide me with the protection of The Great Mother."
Pass your athame three times over the dish of salt.
Move to the East Quarter and say,
"I consecrate you, my athame, with Air that you may provide me with knowledge of infinite places."
Pass the athame over the incense smoke three times.
Move to the South Quarter and say,
"I consecrate this athame with Fire, so that I may be empowered with the strength of the Fire that burns in the core of the Earth."
Pass the athame over the candle three times.
Move to the West Quarter. Say,
"I consecrate you, my athame with Water so that understanding and wisdom of great mysteries will be mine."
Pass the athame three times over the chalice.
Then return to the centre of the circle, stand facing North, holding your athame aloft and say,
"I consecrate this athame with Spirit so it may be a fitting repository for my magickal energy. So mote it be, So mote it be, So mote it be!"
Grounding Your Energy
 After you have finished a working, it is essential to ground the energy you have raised. If you don't all that excess energy will be bouncing around and possibly creating some kind of haunting effect.
To ground your energy, first send the Circle into the cosmos. You do this by walking its circumference three times counterclockwise, visualizing it being sent into the cosmos to do its work. When this is done, kneel and place both hands on the ground, letting the magickal energy drain from you into the Earth. Say,
"Return unto The Elements from whence you came."
Rituals of Purification
Before doing a working, it is important to be in a state of purity, both in a spiritual and a bodily sense. A purification ritual is a cleansing of the spirit and body, a way of replacing negative energy or energy which is simply out of harmony with the purpose of the working.
The Ritual Bath
Water has played a part in purification rites for millenia in widely divergent cultures (think for example of Baptism within the Christian church, or of the daily ritual baths taken by the clergy of Isis or of the sprinkling of water which greeted worshippers at the temples consecrated to Aphrodite in Ancient Greece).
The simplest ritual bath is a hot tub into which a cup of epsom salts have been poured. To awaken the cleansing essences of the salts you should bless and charge them. You can do this by putting the salts into a small bowl—especially good for the purpose are those shell bowls which are available at many new age shops. Then raise your hands ove the salts and say,
"Goddess, bless these salts."
You can also add a few drops of the magickal oil appropriate to the working to the bath.
Another excellent purification bath is the hyssop bath. Hyssop is a potent cleansing herb. It is fragrant and fresh smelling and gives the water a distinct energy which is almost tangible. Make a decoction to add to the bath. This can be done by taking four teaspoons of dry hyssop and pouring boiling water over it and letting it steep, covered for about 20 minutes. You can also make decoctions using many other herbs (click here to see other recipes for herb decoctions)
Lavender is also suitable for purification baths and is prepared exactly the same way as the hyssop except you substitute five tablespoons of lavender for the hyssop. Then strain the liquid into your bath. Don't omit this step because otherwise you will probably stop up the tub!
As you soak in the tub, inhale the fragrance and visualize yourself becoming physically and spiritually cleansed by the light of The Goddess. Either dip your head in the water or pour some over your head. Take your time. Enter a meditative state. Candlelight, sunlight and moonlight are particularly conducive to producing the proper state of being for effective spell-casting.

I got this from a friend of mine-enjoy

Which do you prefer, a Coven or Solitary and why?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was a solitary for about a year and a half and my friend & I have been practicing together for about a year. We both would prefer to be in a coven, however, it is very difficult to find one in our area and it is even more difficult to find other people whom you can trust! She and I have been friends for six years now and I love to practice the craft with her because we are both so comfortable with eachother!
Cear, Shillington PA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
My name is Moon Warrior ,I think both are important .Blessed Be!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a distinction between being solitary and working alone. To work alone is simply that there is not a coven available that suits you. To be Solitary is to decide against ever joining a group. A good coven is wonderful. We are like diamonds rubing against each other polishing our skills extending our knowledge and deapening our faith. We help and challange each other to grow. There are things that a person cannot do for themselves Initiation is one of them. Training in psychism and ritual compresses ten years of solitiary work into six months. Reality checks by elders and other members help keep us ballanced and out of fantasy worlds. A necessary ability for a coven member is enough integrity to yeild to the group without being the lesser for it.
Ken Ra

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I practice as a solitary but would also like the experience of working with a coven. Unfortunately,the town I live in is so small I don't think I coud round up 13 people without making a visit to the cemetary!!!! Only kidding of course,but trying to find a working coven when you are from a small town is kind of rough. I know some other solitaries but that's how they want to stay. Once in a while one or two of us will get together to do something but not often.
Bright Blessings~ TGM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a solitary witch mainly because I don't know of anyone else who lives close to me to create a coven. But that's alright because I am able to learn and discover the way of the Goddess on my own. After many years of being forced to be part of a "traditional" religion, I'm better of and more at peace with myself this way. Blessed Be.
Bloodsong

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For me its solitary for I can't find a coven. I've not actually worked a big spell yet. Maybe small chants, using stones, drinking 'tea'. But circle stuff, not yet. Actually, I think I would prefer solitary even if I had the choice. Too self conscious..
Anyway, I'm not even sure what to call myself. I like the word Witch, but I've received certain rather unpleasant comments; even some from fellow magick practitioners. Apparently some people are very hung-up on labels like Wicca, Witch and Pagan. Anyone out there care to help me out in case I make another social faux pas?
Windsong Firecat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
,P> I have been solitaire since i began practicing and beleave that i can take my craft no farther then it is now on my own. i beleave there is a time that all should seek a coven for exchange of information. But it should be one the practicionar feels right in. Jim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merry we meet! I am new to the craft, just over six months. From my limited experience, I would say that both forms of practice are the ideal. For the most part, my studying and practice is done alone. I do, however, have a group that includes my sister, a dear friend, and a newer, but still close friend. I do not feel at all uncomfortable practicing with these witches, and I do find that we can accomplish some amazing manifestations together. We are talking about formally becoming a coven, but I am hesitation for fear that it will change our group dynamics. I worry that once we each take formal roles within the coven, that someone will be bound to start "power-tripping". Has anyone had personal experience with this sort of situation? Anyway, I would say that both solitary and group activities benefit the craft.
Blessed Be...Diandra

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merry Meet, I have been a solitary for a year and some days now and I much prefer it that way. I have always felt that religion is a very personal thing and I don't need anyone elses opinions to distract me as I learn. I don't mind networking with others to compare ideas and things, so if you'd like to email me feel free and BLESSED BE.
[email protected]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been a solitary since I pledged myself five years ago. However, this year, my husband and I went to Salem for Samhain and were honored to observe the circle celebrated by Lauri Cabot and the Temple of the Nine Wells. I left New England filled with an inner peace that I can never remember experiencing in my current life. Although I am not sure whether or not I would like to belong to a coven, I enjoyed the fellowship of the circle very much.
Branwen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm undecided. Coven's are so secretive you can hardly find one (which is my dilema). I am a fledgeling whose been left flailing by herself. My fiance got me interested, then we split up and I don't know where to go to next.
[email protected]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As to the question of "coven or solitary"............. By the nature of my being and in the deepest corners of my heart I am a witch. Witchcraft is my way of life. If I am among Wiccans, I am Wiccan. Around Druids I am Druid. But my religion is a personal part of my life and a part of who I am. Therefore I am solitary for all of my days but always capable of sharing my wine.
Papa Crow

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I prefer solitary. The first time I decided that Wicca was the right religion for me, I told a few friends. And they wanted to join me and start a coven. I thought, "great, a coven, that'll be good for my spiritual advancing." It turned out they only wanted to be like the girls in the movie "The Craft" and acccually had no real beliefs in wicca or any of it. They ruined everything we started, and i had to quit and start over again just fix what they did. I have since dropped them, and they don't know that I've been a wiccan ever since.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe that all are 'The Hidden Children' and we are given "FREE WILL" in each lifetime to make our own choices as to if we will follow 'The Path'! To me The Old Religion is the only Spiritual Path for me and it is a Personal Path between myself and The Old Ones.No one walks my Path with me except The Old Ones! Others who come to me walk their own Path which for a time may parallel mine but there will be a time in the future when each of us will no longer 'touch' but that is to be expected! Certainly 'Book Knowledge' is important BUT 'One-On-One Experience' can not be equaled ! It has been written of The Womens' Mysteries - "What man may not know nor woman tell!" I have never seen anything in 'Book' form dealing with the Womens Mysteries ! Likewise,I have never met a High Priestess that was qualified to teach The Male Mysteries ! I have followed The Path since 1972, and spent time as a Solitaire and a High Priest of Covens. Our Tradition which now has 7 Covens and Solitaires in the states of Washington, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Georgia and New Jersey is based on the belief of..." The Old Religion Through New Rituals ". We believe that all Traditions have something to offer and as the old saying goes.."If it feels good, use it !" I believe that one must experience both Solitaire and Coven exposure and then follow..."One's Own Free Will !"
Blessed Be !

Merry Met,
I am a Solitare and I prefer it over Covens for many reasons. 1 is that in any large group of people there's bound to be someone who just want's power, is doing it for thrills or whatever. The second reason is a Coven is structure. I feel that Wicca is a religion that you make up as you go along. Worshipping whatever God/ess you choose your way. I am a Solitary also because I am in High School in a small town in NY. The people here want to be witchs for the shock value. If there are any Witchs in the Laurens Area though, I would be happy if you would e-mail me.
Blessed Be,
Morgaine Fey

I think that both offer advantages and have faults.I have been a practicing wiccan for four years now and for the most part solitary. I find myself wondering sometimes why there is so few pagan/ wiccan covens that offer help and knowledge without requiring all of the members to participate fully. The ideal coven to me would provide for both typs of wiccans - those who want all of the ceremony and group work and those that simply might need some advice or teaching without further involvment. The coven also should recognize that its members beliefs and interpretations might differ and should try to accomadate those differences ( such as a coven performing both Druid ceremonies and Egyptian magic ). Perhaps this is too much to ask for. As of now I am still looking for a coven or circle that could recognize my individuality and still provide friendship and help in magic that could use more than one person. Any out there in the Boston area? Blessed be!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merry Meet! I'm a solitary working and I prefere to stay this way. I think it's almost impossible to find enough people for a coven harmonizing together. There will always be some desturbing energies between a group of more than three or four people. Most people are too different, even if they belong in the same things. As I already told I'm solitary but I have some sisters around here sharing my opinion. So be try to be good solitaries only celebrating the feasts of the Goddess together. And that's good the way it is. We also talk about our work, exchange experiences and knowledge and we're sisters.
It would be great to hear from other solitary witches!
Blessed be!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been a solitary for as long as I have followed the path. At one point I considered joining a coven, but I found that the masks that they chose for the God & Goddess where not ones that worked for me. I suppose that I would consider myself an eclectic in that I have taken pieces of many different traditions & woven them into something that works for me. I think that is the true magick of being a solitary, I am creating my own mysteries that are truer to what I believe rather than following in the steps of one who says it must be done their way...that smacks to much of 'organized religion'.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
covens
i say covens because some people need the emotional support and as long as they dont get into a coven where some guy or girl is claming to be alister crawlys new reincarnation then normally they are a good thing. i just ask that people who are interested in joining a coven check it out first and look for people who are off in the head and people who like to control others. if you find these things then DUH simply dont join that coven. spend the time and find one that suits your own personal belifes
shade

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having been both I must vote Solitary. You can raise more energy in a coven but the drawback is that when bound by an oath you are linked on a karmic level. This means that when someone in the group is not following the right path you will also receive the karmic backlash. As a solitary you are accountable for your own actions only and can still enjoy fellowship in a circle which is not the binding contract that a coven is. Lastly I would say in closing that I made some friends in coven that I would not have wanted to miss and saw some things I may not otherwise have seen; but the price was steep and I doubt I will enter into that type of binding again in this lifetime.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I prefer to be a solitary. I want to learn and develop and create at my own pace. I don't wish to be led by someone. Within a coven, I feel, that you are led a specific direction rather than taught to go your own direction. For some people a structured way of learning may be what is needed, but for others, myself included, solitary is the way to go and the way of life we live.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been practicing the craft for 6mo. now , from a beginners point of view a coven could missdirect you, so the first year and a day is all important. But although i have 6 mo. to go, I long for the interaction of a coven. to talk with others of my beliefs and insights. So I the coven has the most to offer in bringing us all together.
Brightest blessings to all

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i'm a solitary (mainly because i'm in a cathoilc house and i'm not accepted even by my family.) the only people (pagans) that i know are on here and one friend who is more of an "on the road to the path" type.. i'd like to find a circle (not a coven) to discus things with but if i ever had a coven i would probably have to form it myself as my belifes are sooooooooo different to most..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel that it would be interesting to be in a Coven for the sake that you would learn more but you also need to work alone.I would like to join a Coven but I like being solitary in some ways.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I prefer being solitary because I haven't found any persons of my like in this area that truly understand Wicca. Most are "into it" for the shock value and the outrageous "costumes" they can adorn. Any true Wiccans in my area?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solitary.
I have several reasons for being a solitary witch.
1) In Belgium, there aren't that much witches, so the number of covens is rather limited and the few there are, are hard to find.
2) Magick is inside you, inside your mind. Whatever you do with it, is personal and therefor I prefere to use my own rituals. Why should I join a coven if the only rituals I use are my own?
3) I am an introvert person, I'm more comfortable on my own. When I work with other people, soner or later I need time to be alone.
Nachtschaduw< (Dutch for Nightshadow)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I prefer a coven or circle, because there's more energy and it's more fun. --

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm a 19 year old solitary, and I've been a solitary for my whole experience on this path (5 years) Which do I prefer?
I think that there will be time in everyone's life when working with others is more effective. I adore being solitary, and I think that when your starting out it's ideal. It took me a long, hard time to form my own opinions about the Lord and Lady, and my connections with Them, and I think that it's important to find your own beliefs without other influences. Working with others is wonderful, and I will admit, I am hungering for contact. It all depends on how you feel, really, and what you prefer. There's nothing like a large group of people coming together to celebrate the holidays, though. :) Blessed be!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coven or Solitaire...hmmmm, that is a tough one. Since I see a lot of misguided solitaire's, I think I 'll say coven. I have been both, and I am still both. I see the need for coven training, though. Unfortunately, there are so many people out there who claim to be this or claim to be that, I don't have time to wade through the cr*p looking for the sincere people who speak the truth. If you have the chance to join a coven, make sure the HPS&HP are who they claim to be. Don't be afraid to do background checks, if they have nothing to hide, they won't mind. If you choose to be Solitaire then remember, we all learn at different paces. Read as much as you can. It is a hard choice, but I am voting for coven.
Beannachtai,
Willowhawk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a solitary pagan which I enjoy because it in my controll what to do for a certain ritual.I do think the covens are power with more than one.I been practiceing about 10 yrs.I belive you can do both.
Maat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a solitary practitioner and think that this is the best for me...I do feel that as a solitary I sometimes miss out on other's ideas and practices and wish that there was a way to remain as I am while still having a network of others from which to draw information and ideas. Where I am in both Geographic location and in my personal life does not allow me to join a coven, however I don't think that I would even if there were one available to me...I enjoy my special times by myself and think that were I to join with an existing group I would not be able to relinquish my autonomy and that in itself would defeat the purpose of my beliefs and desires.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is always desireable to "practice solitary" even if one is in a group-just as Christians are expected to pray every day, even if they go to church on Sunday!! Group practice can be joyful, powerful, magic, but daily prayer and meditation, small rituals, the attention paid to life's details is the basis of spirituality! Blessed be, Louise

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like being a Solitary wiccan ecclectic.I do go to public rituals. Some day that special group I would be happy to join. I am a egyptian, wicca ecclectic and I work Solitary.I am a member and Priestess of the Fellowship of Isis.I serve the Goddess Isis, Maat and Hathor. I use these Goddess in my wicca circle. I did my own Self-Dedication to become a Wiccan as of Feb 4th of 2 years ago.

Crystalomancy or crystal gazing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A mode of divination practiced since ancient times with the help of a crystal lobe, a pool of water, or any transparent object. Also, it can be accomplished with water, ink, and other like substances in the divination called hydromancy.
The divinatory practitioner is known as the scryer while the practice is known as scrying. Depending on the era the practice ranges from a simple to an elaborate form. However, the main purpose of the objects is always to induce in the clairvoyant a state of hypnosis so the seer can see visions in the crystal.
The crystal most favored by crystal gazers is a spherical or oval globe, about four inches in diameter, and preferably a genuine rock-crystal. It may be white, blue, violet, yellow, green, opalescent, or transparent. Blue and amethyst colors are less tiring on the eyes. Such a rock-crystal is very expensive and is many times substituted by a sphere of glass which renders good results.
The crystal itself must be a perfect sphere without a speck or flaw, and traditionally based in a stand of highly polished ebony, ivory, or boxwood.
In the practice, Hindus use cups of treacle or ink. Stones of pale sea green or reddish tints have been used. Ancient crystallomancers had precise invocations of the spirits to aid them in elaborate rituals. The man was pure in life and religious dispositions. In preparation for the ritual, a few days before he made frequent ablutions, subjecting himself to prayer and fasts.
The crystal and stand are inscribed with sacred characters as the floor in the room where the invocation is performed be inscribed with such characters. The room must be of thorough cleanliness and solemn atmosphere. But, the mental attitude is of the utmost importance in the divination, because true faith in it is essential for success.
If the magician is assisted by one or two friends who must observe the same rules and be guided by the same principles. The time of the invocation is set in accordance with the positions of the heavenly planets, and all preparations are made during the increasing of the moon. All instruments and accessories to be used in the ceremony--the sword, rod, and compasses, the fire and perfume to be burned, as well as the crystal--are consecrated or "charged" prior to the ritual.
During the procedure the magician faces the east and summons from the crystal the spirit he desires. Magic circles which were previously inscribed on the floor are those which the magician stands in, and it is best for him to remain within the circles for sometime after the spirit has been released. No part of the ceremony must be omitted or the invocation might incur failure.
Paracelsus and others declared the elaborate ceremonies were unnecessary, since the magnes microscomi (the magnetic principle in man) was clearly sufficient to achieve the desired object. In a later period elaborate ceremonies were not completely eliminated, but were made less imposing.
If the person for whom the ceremony is intended, is performing the ceremony himself, has no clairvoyant faculty, then the best choice for a substitute is a young boy or girl born out of wedlock who is still perfectly pure and innocent. Prayers and magical words are said prior to the ceremony along with the burning of incense and perfume. The child's forehead may be anointed and he may wear garments befitting the impressive nature of the ritual.
Some early writers describe formula prayers, known as the "Call" given prior to the inspection of the crystal. Finally after the crystal was "charged" it was given to the medium or clairvoyant person, The first indication of the clairvoyant vision was a mist or cloud over the crystal which gradually dissipated and then the appearance came into view.
Modern crystalomancy continues using a similar procedure but the preparations are simpler. The crystal is spherical and about the size of an orange. It may by held with the finger and thumb of the magician, or, if one end is flattened it may be placed on a table, or alternatively held in the palm of the hand against the background of a black cloth.
The procedure is done in subdued light. If the divination is performed for someone else it is recommended that the person holds the crystal in his hands a few minute before it is passed to the medium.
The aim of crystal gazing, as previously said, is to induce a hypnotic state producing visionary hallucinations, the reflection of light in the crystal forming points de repere for such hallucinations. Thus, the value of elaborate ceremonials and impressive rituals lies in their potential to affect the mind and imagination of the seer.
It is suggested that if telepathy operates with a greater force in a hypnotic state then it may also function in a similar fashion with the self-imposed hypnosis of crystal gazing.
With the help of visionary powers many incidents of crime, such as finding missing persons and discovering missing and stolen property, have been solved. The telepathic theory does not seem to answer the operation of this process when the appearance of the incident appears prior to its actual occurrence. The answer to this mystery must be left to future psychic research.
Though, there seems to be general agreement that the appearance is preceded by a milky clouding of the crystal. This clouding seems to be a picture itself. It is dependent on the operational conditions, and not a result of strain on the scryer's eyes, for the individual glances away for awhile the clouding still exits when his gaze returns to the crystal.
The first pictures act as a drop-scene, the nearest allegory is the cloud and of which, in materialization seances, phantasmal figures emerge. The pictures to which the could gives way to may be small or expand to the entire extent of the sphere in amazing size.
Sometimes the sphere completely disappears from the scryer's sight. The figures and/or scene assumes life-size proportions rendering the scryer a sense of bilocation as if he is part of the group or scene. This sense differs from clairvoyance.
It has been discovered that the images produced by scrying are often symbolic and the elements of choice are discernible which indicates the presentation is provided by an exterior intelligence. Usually, however, the pictures are either disconnected, vague images, or they are very clear. Also, in the visionary images have been detected thought pictures or forms, dreamlike visions, forgotten, reflected memories which may give way to representation of past, present or future events.
From the above is should be apparent the interpretation of images produced in scrying should be critically analyzed to determine whether they give valid information upon which to act, or contain some figments of the scryer's personal mental process which render the interpretation invalid. This is why it is recommended the scryer be in good physical and mental health in order to maintain objectivity in his interpretations. Caution should be the keyword when acting upon the interpretations. Even the inquirer should question his own intentions, how eager is he to believe the crystallomancer?

crystal power
A crystal is a solid formed by the solidification of chemicals, has a regularly repeating internal arrangement of atoms and molecules, and is bounded by external plane faces. Crystal particles form a variety of geometrical shapes due to their internal compressions. Crystals have aesthetic properties that have long made them attractive in jewelry. But they also have some properties that make them very important to the electronics and optical industries. Today, crystals are used in just about every type of  modern technology.
For centuries, crystals and other gems have been desired for their alleged magical healing and mystical paranormal powers. This belief continues today among occultists and New Age healers, even though it is based on nothing more than testimonials, the placebo effect, selective thinking, wishful thinking, the Forer effect, sympathetic magic, and communal reinforcement. There is no scientific evidence that crystals are conduits of magical energies useful for healing and protection, or for telling the future.
We can dismiss the pre-scientific belief in the magical powers of crystals and gemstones as due to the lack of scientific  knowledge. Modern occultists, however, distort and falsify scientific knowledge in order to promote belief in their crystal products. According to the purveyors of this crystalline pseudoscience, crystals channel good "energy" and ward off bad "energy." They carry "vibrations" that resonate with healing "frequencies," work with the chakras and help balance yin and yang. Crystals allegedly affect the emotions and can be used not only for physical healing, but for emotional problems as well. Crystals can not only help with emotional healing, but with self-expression, creativity, meditation, and the immune system. None of these claims is backed by any scientific evidence.
Today, crystal wands are used to heal auras in aura therapy. But one of the more egregious pseudoscientific claims regarding crystals is that, if arranged properly, they can provide protection against harmful electromagnetic forces such as those that are emitted from computer monitors, cellular phones, microwave ovens, hair dryers, power lines, and other people. The Bioelectric Shield was invented by a chiropractor from Montana, Charles Brown, who claims he heard voices in his head and had visions in his bed as to how to arrange crystals in the shape of a flying saucer in order to provide this protection. His bioelectric shields are sold for anywhere from $139 to over a thousand dollars. Cherie Blair, the wife of England's prime minister, wears one of these magical pendants. They are said to be "medically proven" and "based on Nobel Prize winning physics." Even if the claims about the protective power of these pendants were true, it would be necessary to envelop your entire body in one to achieve the desired result. By hanging a little piece of jewelry around the neck, you might be able to protect a small part of the throat, however.
The New Age idea that crystals can harness and direct energy seems to be based upon a misunderstanding of one of the more curious characteristics of certain crystals, namely, that they produce an electrical charge when compressed. This is known as the piezoelectric effect and was discovered in 1880 by Pierre and Jacques Curie. Other technological developments had to occur before the piezoelectric effect could be put to use, however, and it was not until the 1950s that the piezoelectric effect could be put to general use in record player needles and a variety of measuring devices. Nowadays, these devices "are used in almost every conceivable application requiring accurate measurement and recording of dynamic changes in mechanical variables such as pressure, force and acceleration."
The piezoelectric effect, however, does not give crystals healing or protective power, despite the claims of those who use and sell crystals in New Age and neo-pagan occultist shops.  However, wearing crystals seems to give some people a feeling of protection. This, and their aesthetic qualities, seem to be the only virtues of crystal jewelry.
Nor do crystals work any better than animal organs for divining the future, although grinding crystals for fortune telling is more humane and sanitary than disembowelment of poor creatures who don't know yesterday from tomorrow.

 Easy Crystal Magick
Crystal or stone magick is very simple and inexpensive to perform.  Stones and their wonderful spirits are all around us. Any of these spells may be cast by using the ordinary stones that are can be found near your home.
Cleaning Stones
Stones are subjected to a multitude of energies before they arrive in your home.  Prior to using them in magic, it is advised that you perform a cleansing or purification on the stones.  However, it is always preferable to listen to your stones/crystals first to "hear" if they require a cleansing.  I personally have 2000+ stones and I think I have cleansed only a handful.
This is a simple process which removes any past influences from the stone, getting it ready for your use.
There are a number of different methods of cleansing:
1.  Place the stones in full sunlight for a day, 3 days, or even a week.  Placing them in direct sunlight is the way to go - not behind a window on a ledge.  Some stones will clear after a day - some others will take longer.  Check the stones daily and sense the energies by placing them in your receptive hand (left hand if you are right handed - opposite if you are left handed).  If the vibrations are regular, the cleansing has been successful.  **Important to note that some stones will damage/fade in the sun.
2.  Bury the stones in the ground for a week or so, then check to see if they have been purified.  If they have, wash them off and your magic can begin.
3.  Run the stones under running water and wipe off with a white cloth.  Check to see if they have been purified - if not - repeat the process.
4.  Another method that is popular is using sea salt, either by mixing the salt with water and soaking the stone or by rubbing the salt directly onto the stone.  Many stones can get damaged by the harshness of salt - if you are not sure whether your stone will be adversely affected by the salt - avoid it altogether.  Rule of thumb - the softer the stone the harsher the damage.
5.  Place the stones - preferably outside - at the start of a full moon for three nights.
6.  Lastly - and my method of choice - is to burn sage and pass the stones through the smoke.
Charging Stones
Many sources site - before using the stones in magic, they should be "charged" or "programmed" with energy for the specific purpose you need the from the stone.  My personal note on this is "programming" is simply wrong.  It is as if you are willing the stone to do something against its will - think of it as trying to potty train a cat.  Eventually, the cat can be trained, but your relationship with the cat will suffer in the process.
"Charging" is a different matter indeed as you are encouraging or awaking the stone to help you or someone else with the properties it already possess.  By charging, you are asking for a specific kind of help.  You are letting the stone know which of its powers you need the most.  It is also wise to ask the stone if it indeed needs a "boost", many do not need the encouragement to help - they share their knowledge and powers willingly.
"Charging" is simply done by holding the stones in your projective hand (right if right handed - left if left handed), visualizing your magical need, and pouring energy out from your body into the stone.
Say for instance you have a Moonstone and need to get more sleep at night.  Put the Moonstone into your projective hand - visualize yourself sleeping -  with that energy pouring from you into the stone.  Once you can feel the vibrations - you know that the stone has been  charged.

Simple Stone Spells
taken from the book "Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic"

Money And Prosperity
New Year's Stone - At sunrise on the morning of the new year, go outside and find the largest stone you can carry.  Take this back to your house and put it in a place of prominence.  If you keep the stone in your house for a year, it will be one filled with prosperity.  Replace the stone every year.
Luck
On the Fence - Rise before the Sun on the morning of the Spring Equinox.  Find several stones and place them on the fence posts that surround your property, visualizing yourself, your home and life filled with luck.
Love
Stone Love - Go to a place that contains many water-worn stones.  Look for a large, flat rock while visualizing yourself being involved with the perfect mate.
On this rock, mark with red ink two intertwined hearts.  As you do this, keep visualization in mind.  When you are finished, bury the stone in the earth in an uncultivated place.
Protection
The Five Pebbles - Go to a moving brook or stream.  While standing in the water and facing downstream, remove five small pebbles from the stream bed.  As you do this, visualize your need for protection.
As your hand closes over the pebbles, see them beaming out protective energies.  Just as the pebbles are hard and have weathered for eons, so too will they strengthen your protective shield.
Now carry them at all times for protection.  If you wish, place them in a small pouch or a fold of cloth, or incorporate them into some form of jewelry.
Magical Intentions
Carry the stones in your pants pocket or place in a cloth pouch and carry with you.

Grounding
Grounding is one of the most important skills that any Wiccan should have. When you are grounded you are better able to focus on everything from the smallest mundane task, to the most important ritual work. Grounding can help to alleviate stress and put you in a proper state of mind for anything you want to do. Below I am going to share with you one of my favorite techniques for grounding. Often however, before you begin to ground, it helps to center your self. For more information on centering yourself, check out the link to Centering here
When you are ready, the following exercise can help you ground.
Sit on the floor in a comfortable position. If you need to sit in a chair make sure that your feet are flat on the ground and that you are relaxed. Take three deep breaths. Visualize that there is a root which grows from the base of your spine or the soles of your feet. This root begins to work its way down through the floor?through the foundation of the building…Into the dirt. It works its way down deep into the Earth. Down through the layers of and, rock and soil. …Deep into the Earth where you see a large pool of brilliant energy. Here your root splits into two. On a nearby boulder, tie one end of the root to anchor you. Let the other end of the root slip into the energy pool.
Release all of the negativity, tension and stress of the day. All of the heavy energy you called back, into the pool so that it can be transformed. Feel it flow away from you making you feel more relaxed. When all of that energy is gone, begin to allow the root to drink in fresh, clean, new energy from the pool. Only take what you need. When you are finished, pull the root back and untie your anchor. Feel the root slowly work its way back up through the sand, rock and soil?Up through the dirt and into the foundation. Back through the floor and return to your body. Take three deep breaths and return to the room you are in.
After completing any type of grounding exercise, it is important to take a moment to assess how you are feeling. Are you feeling lightheaded? Are you feeling solid and complete? If you are feeling off in any way take a moment to lie on the floor and let some of the excess energy return to the earth. Also, eating a little bit of protein or chocolate is a good way to end an exercise like the one above. Food is an excellent way to ground excess energy.
Grounding is an important skill to have and many Wiccans make it a part of their daily routine. It can help to bring balance and focus in a world which often seems to move too fast. Similar exercises to the one above can be found in numerous books on Wicca, such as, Spiral Dance by Starhawk and Witchcrafting by Phyllis Currott. It is important to note that not everyone will find the same exercises helpful. Keep reading and researching until you find the ones that work for you.

What is reflexology?
Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hand with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. it is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. (The Complete Guide to Foot Reflexology (Third Edition))

What is the history of reflexology?
Around the world and throughout history reflexology has been rediscovered and reinstated as a health practice time and time again by peoples around the globe seeking to deal with health concerns. Archeological evidence Egypt (2330 BCE), China (2704 BCE) and Japan (690 CE) points to ancient reflexology medical systems. In the West the concept of reflexology began to emerge in the 19th century, based on research into the nervous system and reflex. While no direct evidence of direct cross-fertilization from ancient times has been discovered, the practice of foot and hand work in a variety of cultures, belief systems and historical periods speaks to reflexology for health as a universal bridging concept.
How does reflexology work?
There are many theories but in our approach we look at the nervous system as the explanation of reflexology's working.
Pressure sensors in the feet and hands are a part of the body's reflexive response that makes possible the "fight or flight" reaction to danger. Feet ready to flee and hands ready to fight communicate with the body's internal organs to make possible wither eventuality. The sudden adrenal surge that enables a person to lift a car is an example of this reaction. Reflexology taps into this reflex network, providing an exercise of pressure sensors and thus the internal organs to which they are inextricably tied.
Where do you apply technique?
We apply techniques to the feet and hands. There is a school of thought that also applies it to the ear arguing it is also reflexology. The techniques, however, are modified from auricular therapy, an acupuncture technique.
It could be argued that all bodywork is reflexive therefore reflexology. We find that the extremities have a powerful influence because of locomotion. While we acknowledge that repeated patterns exist throughout the body we find our most effective focus to be the feet and hands.
How Is Technique Applied?
Pressure is applied to the feet and hands using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques. Stretch and movement techniques are utilized as "desserts" to provide relaxation to the foot. Oil, cream and lotion is not utilized in traditional reflexology work. Tools or instruments are used for self help application only due to safety concerns.
How Reflex Area Charts or Maps Organized?
The body is reflected on the feet or hands. Left foot/hand reflects the left side of the body and the right foot/hand the right side. The spine reflex area runs down the insides of the foot and hand with reflex areas for the arm and shoulder reflected toward the outside of the foot or hand. The toes and fingers reflect head and neck reflex areas as well as those of the internal parts of the body they enclose. The ball of the foot mirrors the chest and upper back in addition the heart and lungs. At the base of the long bones of the feet and hands is represented the waistline of the body. Portions of the body above its waistline are mirrored above this line toward the toes or fingers and those below the waistline toward the heels of the foot or hand. Internal organs lying above the body's waistline are reflected by reflex areas above this line while those below the waistline are mirrored below this line.

What are the benefits of reflexology ?
In general terms the benefits of reflexology have to do with the reduction of stress. Because the feet and hands help set the tension level for the rest of the body they are an easy way to interrupt the stress signal and reset homeostasis, the body's equilibrium.
Whether reflexology can benefit certain conditions and diseases in still under investigation. Further scientific study need to be done in order to come to some definite benefits of reflexology in regard to illness and disease.
Reflexology is a complement to standard medical care. It should not be construed as medical advice. It should not be a replacement to medical help. Please use it wisely. We care about your safety.
What can A Reflexologist Be Able To Tell Me About My Health?
Reflexology assessment takes place as stress cues are evaluated. Stress cues are parts of the foot or hand that shows adaptation to stress. Adaptation is shown by visual signs such as callousing, knobby toes or bunion. Indications of stress are also seen as sensitivity to technique application or touch signs perceived by the reflexologist as technique is applied. The assessment of such stress cues allows the reflexologist to target areas of stress and to design a session of pressure technique application appropriate to provide relaxation specific to the individual.

When should I do reflexology?
Reflexology can be done practically anytime and anywhere. The trick is consistency. We have been impressed with the results from China. Their secret seems to be that they do reflexology once a day for six days in two week segments. Then they review the results and do more segments as necessary.
This requires self help and family help as well as the guidance of practitioners. The practitioner can give you a quality signal to break up the pattern of stress but you and your family can provide the quantity to help break it up the stress patterns in your feet and hands.
Build reflexology into your life. It is easy to do reflexology well doing other activities. Put a foot roller under your desk or work your hands while waiting for the kids at school. Be creative but be consistent. Five minutes a day is worth more than an hour once in awhile.

Who does reflexology?
There are a variety of people doing reflexology from concerned parents to doctors in China. It is a useful tool for a variety of situations. Many professions have taken up reflexology from cosmetologists to nurses.
Reflexology is now being introduced into hospitals and HMO's. It is even being considered for insurance reimbursement.
There are full time professionals doing reflexology. We think the future looks bright for reflexology and the profession of reflexology.

What should I expect from a reflexology session?
Reflexology sessions in general last from 30 minutes to an hour. It is a clothed session with only the removal of shoes and socks as a requirement. (Some massage therapists add it as a part of a overall massage session so they will require the removal of additional clothing.)
Reflexologist will use a chair and at times a table. Some do use oil. However, this is a tool that is debated within the profession. Dry technique is common.
Reflexologists use pressure, stretch and movement to work through the foot methodically. The whole foot should be worked in most circumstances. Both feet should be covered as well.
The reflexologist should work within your comfort zone. Too much pressure can actually be harmful and could lead to injury. But personal preference is something you should communicate with your reflexologist. If you indicate that too much pressure is being used and the practitioner continues we suggest you stop the session. You should always have your wishes respected.
Do not rely on a reflexologist for medical help. The reflexologist is limited to complementing medicine not replacing it.
You should feel relaxation at the end of a session. How long that relaxation lasts is a good indicator of the effectiveness of the session. Make note of this. And tell your reflexologist your response to the session. This can be helpful information.
Finally enjoy the session. Be careful that talking doesn't interfere with the relaxation effect. Discussing world politics is probably something best left to another time.

Are there scientific studies?
There are many studies on reflexology. The rush is now on to test the effectiveness on certain disorders. The jury is far from in but we have compiled some of the findings in "Medical Applications of Reflexology, Findings in Research about Safety, Efficacy, Mechanism of Action and Cost Effectiveness of Reflexology".

Spokes on the Wheel
Upcoming Sabbats lore and ritual
April 30 -- May Eve -- Beltaine
As the weather heats up and the plant world burgeons, an exuberant mood prevails. Folk dance around the Maypole, emblem of fertility (the name "May" comes from a Norse word meaning "to shoot out new growth"). May 1st was the midpoint of a five-day Roman festival to Flora, Goddess of Flowers. The name "Beltaine" means "Bel's Fires"; in Celtic lands, cattle were driven between bonfires to bless them, and people leaped the fires for luck. The association in Germany of May Eve with Witches' gatherings is a memory of pre-Christian tradition. "Wild" water (dew, flowing streams or ocean water) is collected as a basis for healing drinks and potions for the year to come. Go HERE for more on the Beltaine!

Introduction To The Sabbats

The most important thing to understand about the eight Witchcraft Sabbats is that they are not man-made. By this, I mean that they are not holidays in the same way that Independence Day is a holiday, i.e. a calendar anniversary of some date that has a special importance in history. Indeed, the Sabbats of Witchcraft do not commemorate any historical event and are, as we shall see, almost antithetical to the concept of history. Nor are they randomly chosen holidays to observe some social institution, such as Mother's Day. No, the eight Sabbats of Witchcraft were not man-made because they existed long before man was made. Or woman. Or the dinosaurs. Or life on this planet. Indeed, these eight holidays might be said to be as old as the Earth itself. They might not have been called "sabbats" then, but they were there just the same.
Whenever I am asked what things make a Witch's worldview different from other people's, one of the first things I think about is the Witch's sensitivity to the cycles of Nature, especially the cycles of the moon and sun.

The reason these holidays are so old is because they are a basic part of how the Earth works. Consequently, these holidays are not of history; they are of Nature. You see, we happen to live on a beautiful blue-green planet that spins on its axis. And that axis is tilted, slightly, to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun. The practical upshot of all this is that once a year, we have a night that is the longest night of the year, accompanied by the shortest day. When the hours between sundown and sunup are the greatest, and the hours between sunup and sundown are least. And we call this time the "Winter Solstice". And exactly opposite it on the wheel of the year, we have its opposite, the longest day of the year, and the shortest night. And we call this time the "Summer Solstice".
And having got this far in our analysis of the planet's yearly cycle, it becomes easy to spot two more days that are similar and equally important. Each Spring, there comes a day when the hours between sunrise and sunset are exactly equal to the hours between sunset and sunrise. And we call this the "Vernal Equinox". Likewise, there comes a day each Fall when the hours of darkness and the hours of daylight are exactly in balance. And we call this the "Autumnal Equinox". It cannot be overstressed that the importance of these four days lies in the fact that nobody "made them up"; rather, they are simply a part of how this planet works.
It is reasonable to assume that even the most primitive of humans noticed this change in the hours of daylight, and the consequent change in the seasons. One can well imagine the anxiety in the mind of the "noble savage" as he witnessed the dwindling hours of daylight each autumn. And the sense of relief he must have felt when the year "turned the corner" at the Winter Solstice, and the days started to grow longer again, promising that Spring would indeed return. Is it any wonder then that the oldest astronomical alignment of which we have a record points to the sun's position in the sky on the Winter Solstice? And this is in a burial mound in Co. Meath, Ireland.
In fact, the relatively new science of "archeoastronomy" underlies much of what has been discovered about the old holidays. Megalithic sites such as Stonehenge, for example, have clear alignments to both the Summer and Winter Solstice, and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinox. Nor are such alignments confined to the British Isles; indeed they can be found the world over: from the pyramids of ancient Egypt to the ancient temples of China; from the cliff dwellings of the Native Americans to the temples of Peru. The two Solstices and two Equinoxes must certainly be the oldest holidays known to humans, and they were known worldwide. Folklorists refer to these four days as the "quarter-days", inasmuch as they quarter the year. Astrologers know them, too, for three Zodiac signs fit neatly into each quadrant, beginning with the first day of Aries at the Vernal Equinox. And modern Witches tend to call them the four "Lesser Sabbats" or "Low Holidays".

The four "Greater Sabbats" or "High Holidays" of the Witches calendar may seem slightly less obvious at first. Essentially, they bisect the quarters we have already discussed, falling at the mid-point of each. For this reason, folklorists refer to them as the "cross-quarter-days". With these in place, the circle of the year begins to look like an eight-spoked wheel, which is a sacred symbol in many ancient religions. Because these four days are not as firmly marked by terrestrial events as the solstices and equinoxes, some writers have been led to speculate that they are derivative, and that their observation evolved at a much later stage of human evolution. Yet, although they may not be completely contemporaneous, their great antiquity was quite recently underscored by the discovery in Ireland of earthwork alignments of the sun's position on the horizon for each of the cross-quarter days! That means that the holiday we today call "Halloween" has been celebrated as far back as megalithic times!
That the cross-quarter days should be regarded as more important than the solstices or equinoxes should come as no surprise. It is a common human experience that things reach their greatest strength, their moment of peak energy, at their midpoint. In observing a human life, for example, a person is usually at the apex of health and vigor at a point about halfway through his mortality. So, too, with most other things in nature. So, too, with each quarter of the year. The cross-quarter-days can thus be seen as the four "power points" of the year. Consequently, those power points were marked by the four most important holidays of the Witches' year which, according to the old folk calendar, also marked the turning of the seasons. These also correspond with the "tetramorph" figures of the Zodiac, and were later adopted by Christian tradition as the sigils of the four gospel writers.
Whenever I am asked what things make a Witch's worldview different from other people's, one of the first things I think about is the Witch's sensitivity to the cycles of Nature, especially the cycles of the moon and sun. In our modern world, insulated as we are from the progress of the seasons, we can go to the local supermarket and buy vegies and fruit year round, without consideration of what is "in season". Still, a Witch can usually tell you where she is in the course of the year, or what phase the moon is in. (Incidentally, the word "Sabbat" was originally Babylonian and was used to designate the quarter-days of the lunar cycle -- Full, New, First and Last Quarter -- thus occurring about every seven days. It was only later that the Jewish people borrowed the word and used it to denote a day of rest and prayer, occurring every seventh day without exception.)
And nothing can keep a modern Witch in tune with the cycles of Nature like observing the Old Holidays. I can still remember the feeling I sometimes got as a child that a particular night during the year was somehow special, charged with magic and power, alive and responsive to my inner thoughts and desires. Like Halloween night (always my favorite holiday) in some ways, but different too, and occurring at other points of the year. I never knew why such nights occurred, but I knew they had to be celebrated, by placing candles on the front-porch railings, creating mysterious shadow-plays where the light of an old incandescent street lamp fell on the side of the garage, or playing hide-and-seek with the neighborhood kids, the wind helping my running. Or maybe an impromptu weenie-roast (always a good excuse for building a big bonfire) was called for. I can't prove it, of course, because I didn't keep a diary, but I'd be almost willing to bet that I had stumbled onto the Old Holidays, vestiges of their primordial power still echoing down through the centuries.
Finding out more about these ancient holy days has been a lifelong labor of love for me, and I sincerely hope that the gleanings of my own research into these mysteries will kindle in my readers that same sense of magic and grounding or "connectedness" with Nature that I have always experienced in relating to the Old Holidays.

SCRYING PROCEDURES
by G.W. Fisler

     The first step in scrying is to pick out the medium that you wish to scry with.  There are many choices.  They range from the simplest (a clear glass filled with water) to the expensive (a large, clear crystal sphere).  There are many variations in between.
     You may have read other articles on scrying either on the net or in a book.  Let me state that all of these writings are wrong, or at least partially. wrong.   Every article that I have read states the author's preferences.  In other words they champion what worked for the author.  You may, and probably, are different.  I can not over-emphasize that you should do what feels right for you.  We are all individuals who have a different psychological makeup.
     The following is a short list of what I have read:
You must use an absolutely clear crystal
You should use a crystal with inclusions (defects)
lead crystal will not work
lead crystal is the only reliable medium
The crystal sphere should be 2" in diameter
the crystal sphere should be at least 3" to 4" in diameter
stare at the crystal without blinking
do not focus on the crystal, but look "past" the crystal. Blinking is all right
This list of contradictions could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.  You need to get what feels right to you.  I personally prefer the scrying mirror for several reasons,  the first being cost.  If you do not want to make your own please e-mail me to discuss a custom made scrying mirror.   This does not mean that I would not or could not use another medium.  It is just that the black faced scrying mirror is what I feel most comfortable with.  The following is a list of mediums that have been used.  There are more possible variation than I have listed here:
Crystal sphere
Crystal skull (carved)
Mirror (could be a black mirror or a silver mirror)
Glass of water
Bowl of water colored with ink
Candle flame
Coals of a fire
fire smoke
Pool of water
Fog or mist over water
     Various disciplines mandate a consecration ritual before using the scrying medium.  On a purely psychological standpoint this makes sense.  The subconscious mind must be convinced what you want it to accomplish.  This may be accomplished through ritual or meditation.  Polishing the crystal or mirror while thinking about what you want to accomplish will be enough.
     Anything that will induce a state of altered awareness should be done.  For beginners dim lighting is a must.  Incense may be burned and/or meditation music may be played.  Do what feels right for you.  A side note is that in past centuries incense played a more important role in inducing altered states than in the present time.  The reason for this is that the incense was inhaled.  This decreased the amount of oxygen in the blood stream.  The brain will enter an altered state during periods of oxygen deprivation.  I do not recommend this procedure due to possible health risks.  It is only mentioned as an historical note.
     The actual procedure for scrying is simple and straightforward:
Get the room ready - dim lighting, incense, music, etc. that you want
Place the scrying medium on a table at a convenient level
A dim light (candle or?) should be behind the viewer.  To start out this should be the only light in the room.
Perform the progressive muscle relaxation exercise
Look at the mirror (or crystal) in a relaxed manner, focusing about 5"  past the surface of the mirror (this may or may not work for you so try other methods)
You will blink but do not be too concerned about it
Keep your mind blank except if you have a specific question to ask
Do not scry for over 20 minutes at first
     The images may appear in different manners.  They may just appear or they may be preceded by a "cloud of mist" forming first.  The mist could dissipate or morph into the images.   The images could be symbols of the subconscious or may be actual pictures of events, past, present or future.  As an example of each person being different,  the first visual impression that I receive looks like flying insects rotating on the reflective surface of the mirror.
     This is the basics.  Your success at scrying may take days, weeks or months to accomplish.  You may be successful the first time that you try.  Practice will make perfect, so keep on trying if you do not succeed at first.  If your feel that you are at a dead end, try something different.   It may help.  Keep practicing.   Remember that nothing worthwhile in life is easy.  Happy visions!

History of Tarot Cards

There are few subjects known to Man about which more misleading or false information has been published than the history of tarot cards. Why?
The answers are simple:
Tarot cards today are associated with fortune-telling and "the occult."  Serious historians, generally speaking, have no desire to be associated with such subjects.
The absence of serious inquiries has created a vacuum that has been willingly filled by individuals who approach the subject with something less than scholarly rigor.
Tarot cards, as a "product of mystery and the unknown," have been perceived to have benefited by allusions to "a secret past, shrouded in mystery" - at least, by some individuals who have been involved in marketing tarot cards.
Misinformation about tarot cards has existed for quite some time.  Thus, many old (and presumed reliable) works are quoted by newer works, and the misinformation is passed down from one generation to the next.
The purpose of this article is to offer a historically accurate history of tarot cards, to explain how some misinformation about tarot card history came to exist, and to suggest some further avenues for study and research.

In the beginning
Tarot cards are an early form of today's playing cards, entering Europe in the 14th century in Italy and France.  A nice facsimile of one of these early decks, the 15th century  Visconti-Sforza Tarocchi Deck, is still available today.  They were described by Feliciano Busi as being "from Saracinia," i.e., the land of the Saracens, or Arabia.  It's important to recall that one of Europe's greatest civilizations - Moorish Spain - was flourishing at this time, and that there was a great deal of intellectual exchange going on between Europe and the Middle East.
Tarot cards (or taroc cards, or tarocchi cards) were originally used for playing a card game called tarocchi, and had no more (or less) to do with foretelling the future than did other types of playing cards.  The major arcana cards did hold secret symbolic meanings for Sufis, who influenced the kabala - this is why correlations are sometimes drawn between the kabala and tarot cards.   In card games, the 22 major arcana cards were trump cards, and the 56 minor arcana cards in four suits are similar to today's standard deck of 52 cards in four suits, with the obvious difference being that the tarot deck has fourteen cards in each suit.

The origin of the word "tarot"
Numerous theories exist, some linking the word with geographic place names, others much more fanciful.  Idries Shah, in The Sufis, hypothesizes that tarot is a derivation of the Arab word turuq, which means "four ways."

And now . . .
Nowadays, most modern tarot cards are used for divination or as a symbol-system for personal growth and development.  Tarot cards are often used as vehicles for artistic expression as well, and numerous artists (including Salvador Dali) have used the symbolism of the tarot as a means of creative expression.
How did tarot cards get associated with fortune-telling?  Actually, all playing cards have been used for divinatory purposes.  Tarot cards, with more intricate designs and an older pedigree than modern decks, tend to look the part more.  And, of course, tarot decks were not all that well-known in England - the English having derived their playing card designs from the French - so that when the Order of the Golden Dawn and other British occultists were searching around for things that looked mysterious, tarot cards filled the bill nicely.

Some Common Myths Dispelled
Tarot cards did not originate in ancient Egypt.  This was an invention by an 18th century writer.
Tarot cards did not arrive in Europe with the Gypsies.  This rumor seems to have started because Gypsies were thought to have come from Egypt - which they didn't - and because Gypsies are often associated with fortune-telling.  This myth is easily dispelled, however, when one stops to consider that tarot cards existed in Europe before the arrival of Gypsies.
Tarot cards have not specifically been known as "cards of the devil."  That title was given to all playing cards by early churchmen - and had nothing to do with fortune-telling.  These protectors of the faith were condemning playing cards because they were used for gambling.  Some sinners went so far as to play cards when (gasp!) they should have been at church services.  There are unconfirmed rumors that this practice may still exist today in some remote places in the world.

wands
    There are a lot of variations on magick wands, depending on the purpose and the Witchcraft tradition.
An updated version of this web page is now available at the new Teen Witch website wands.

    In many European based Witchcraft traditions, the magick wand is a simple unadorned stick of natural wood, often with the bark still intact. The wand is typically six inches to two feet in length and a quarter inch to two inches in diameter, either straight or with bends (one slight bend is the most common). The wand can be cut, but usually it is uncut and kept exactly as it was found laying on the ground in nature. Witches used to break dead branches off of trees.
    In earlier times Witches broke off dead wood, never sawing or cutting live wood. This policy actually helped keep the forests healthy, because insects and other vermin went infect dead branches and then spread into the rest of the tree. In many areas of the world there are now too many people impacting the available trees and it is no longer environmentally sound to harvest dead wood directly from a tree.
    Eileen Holland reports a tradition of cutting wands “from one-year-old trees, in a single stroke, at sunrise on a Wednesday.?Ask for permission from the tree before cutting a wand. Thank the tree for the gift of the wand. Possibly leave a small token of thanks, such as a pebble, ribbon (natural fibers and colors), or feather.
    When picking up sticks for use as a wand, the Witch will pick a natural stick that looks right and feels good when held. A Witch will recognize the right stick because it “feels?right (an inner feeling in your heart).
    When picking up sticks for use as a wand, the Witch will pick a natural stick that looks right and feels good when held. A Witch will recognize the right stick because it “feels?right (an inner feeling in your heart).
    Various kinds of wood are associated with specific kinds of magick and the Witch will find a wand from the right kind of tree for the magick to be performed.
    The most famous of these simple stick wands is the divining rod, used for locating water or lost items. The divining wand will have a fork (two short ends that come together into a longer single length, kind of like a “Y? and is held loosely by the branched end (one branch in each hand). The wand will slightly twitch or vibrate to give the Witches hints on which direction to look.
    In high ceremonial magick the wands are very elaborate, typically constructed of metal (or fine wood that has been covered with gold, a process called “gilding? and encrusted with valuable gems. Magick runes or symbols are carved on the length of the wand and typically there is a valuable gemstone at the tip.
    Many Witches craft a much less expensive ceremonial wand by wrapping a piece of wood (such as a dowel from the local hardware store) with cloth, leather, twine, and other materials. Magick runes or symbols can be burned or carved into the wood or drawn on cloth or leather strips and wrapped onto the wand. Seashells, feathers, crystals, and other items from nature can be tied or glued to the wand.
    With these kinds of homemade wands, the personal expression of the individual Witch is important. Often the choice of items attached to the wand will be based on the Goddess or God the Witch honors (for example, a wand dedicated to Aphrodite might have seashells while a wand dedicated to Diana might have small sterling silver trinkets). The important thing is to trust your heart and create a wand that matches your personality and beliefs.
    A wand shouldn’t be longer than the length from your elbow to your fingertips.
    For some rituals or spells, the wand might have something temporarily attached to it. For example, for a Full Moon ritual, a Witch might write down the goals and desires for the next month on a small piece of paper and then tie or wrap the piece of paper on the wand.
    As in most of Witchcraft, it is important to figure out what works for you personally. Something may be great for everyone else but not work for you, while another thing that nobody else does might be perfect for you. Trust your heart.
    When you finish choosing or making a wand, you will want to dedicate it to magickal work. The ritual should be short and simple: place the tool on the altar, cast a circle, and perform a shrt ritual to consecrate the tool. If you belong to a specific Witchcraft tradition, use the ritual specified by your tradition. If you are an eclectic Witch or still undecided on tradition, make up your own short ceremony, possibly based around a poem you write.
    If you have a permanent altar, you might leave your wand on your altar for 24 hours after your ceremony before making use of your new wand. Any of the Sabbats or New Moon or Full Moon are particularly appropriate times to dedicate a new wand.
    Feel free to submit JPEGs of your personal wand. Indicate the materials, symbols, deity, Witchcraft tradition, or other special information that may help understand your wand.
correspondences of a wand
    Some traditions correspond wands with the element air. Some traditions correspond wands with the element fire. In some traditions, the element is determined by the materials and decorations, including runes and other magick writing.
    The wand is considered to be a phallic tool and therefore of masculine element and male energy. The sword corresponds with the planet Mars.
uses of a wand
    Wands are most commonly used to channel energy. Match the wand’s materials and decorations and magick writings to the kind of energy being channeled.
    Wands may be used to cast a circle. Some Witches use an athame for most circles, reserving wands for casting circles of special significance.
    Wands may be used to invite and control entities.
    Wands may be used for manifestation.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.
Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five prinicples of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

Taoism
    The early Han dynasty (207 B.C.-9 A.D.) devoted itself to regaining the same level of central government as the Ch'in (221 B.C.-207 B.C.) and the Legalists had so ruthlessly accomplished. This ideology of central government, along with the Legalists' attempts to standardize Chinese culture and Chinese philosophy, led thinkers of the Han to attempt to unify all the rival schools of Chinese thought and philosophy that had developed over the previous three hundred years.
   The Legalists attempted to standardize Chinese thought by burning the books of rival schools and by making it a capital crime to speak of Confucius, Lao Tzu, or Mo Tzu. The Han thinkers, who thoroughly despised the Legalists and their methods while adopting many of their goals, took a different approach; rather than reject alternate ways of thinking, they took a syncretic approach and attempted to fuse all the rival schools of thought into a single system. This syncretic project of the early Han is known as the Han synthesis.

Pre-Confucian China and the Five Classics
 The Han philosophers concentrated specifically on the Five Classics, attempting to derive from them, particularly the I ching , or Book of Changes, the principle of the workings of the universe, or Tao. This new theory of the universe they appended to the I ching ; this appendix explains the metaphysical workings of the entire universe and is the origin of what is called the yin-yang or Five Agents school of Chinese thought.

Wu-hsing
    The essentials of the yin-yang school are as follows: the universe is run by a single principle, the Tao, or Great Ultimate. This principle is divided into two opposite principles, or two principles which oppose one another in their actions, yin and yang. All the opposites one perceives in the universe can be reduced to one of the opposite forces. The yin and yang accomplish changes in the universe through the five material agents, or wu hsing , which both produce one another and overcome one another. All change in the universe can be explained by the workings of yin and yang and the progress of the five material agents as they either produce one another or overcome one another. Yin-yang and the five agents are, I need to stress, a universal explanatory principle. All phenomena can be understood using yin-yang and the five agents: the movements of the stars, the workings of the body, the nature of foods, the qualities of music, the ethical qualities of humans, the progress of time, the operations of government, and even the nature of historical change. All things follow this order so that all things can be related to one another in some way: one can use the stars to determine what kind of policy to pursue in government, for instance.

T'ien
    The yin and yang represent all the opposite principles one finds in the universe. Under yang are the principles of maleness, the sun, creation, heat, light, Heaven, dominance, and so on, and under yin are the principles of femaleness, the moon, completion, cold, darkness, material forms, submission, and so on. Each of these opposites produce the other: Heaven creates the ideas of things under yang, the earth produces their material forms under yin, and vice versa; creation occurs under the principle of yang, the completion of the created thing occurs under yin, and vice versa, and so on. This production of yin from yang and yang from yin occurs cyclically and constantly, so that no one principle continually dominates the other or determines the other. All opposites that one experiences—health and sickness, wealth and poverty, power and submission—can be explained in reference to the temporary dominance of one principle over the other. Since no one principle dominates eternally, that means that all conditions are subject to change into their opposites.
    This cyclical nature of yin and yang, the opposing forces of change in the universe, mean several things. First, that all phenomena change into their opposites in an eternal cycle of reversal. Second, since the one principle produces the other, all phenomena have within them the seeds of their opposite state, that is, sickness has the seeds of health, health contains the seeds of sickness, wealth contains the seeds of poverty, etc. Third, even though an opposite may not be seen to be present, since one principle produces the other, no phenomenon is completely devoid of its opposite state. One is never really healthy since health contains the principle of its opposite, sickness. This is called "presence in absence." Once you have this principle down, the particular Chinese view as expressed in literature.
