Any red-blooded Proddy like I will tell you the Irish monks cannot be relied on since they claimed to have made it by coracle and Ireland was under British rule near as dammit anyway and no Irishman would want to leave such kind paternal masters.

Prince Henry Sinclair, yes, I'll buy and thank you for that. I never heard of him before, but being a Scot he must have done a damn fine job.

But, Vineland the Great was an established feofdom.

The Irish monks wrote the history of the church down during the dark ages & if it were not for them you ignorant proddy's would never have known the existance of God. I shall light but another candle for your hopeless soul Flash.

Ref # 16. Henry Sinclair, 1st Earl of Orkney. He certainly sailed to Greenland in the 1390s and may have progressed on to Canada, Baffin Island is less than 100 miles from Greenland.

Sunny,
Don't frget the Roman Catholic churchaccomplish alot of good despite the corruption.  established the university system,  their contribution to the sciences have been overlooked, they have made tremencous advances in astronomy and geology. during the dark ages the monastaries acted as a repository of the world knowledge.

One could ask what the university system is. If it is the system of free education by a pedagogue for his  - dare I say it - Disciples - then the ancient Greeks could surely make a claim.

There are many phony claims for discovery of modern scientific principles by Islamic universities; the metal - acid battery springs to mind. Ten and  Funk gave  brilliant overviews of this some months ago.

Navigation; the cross-staff, the astrolabe sextant octant were respectively claimed by the Arabs and then of course we run into the murky cross-currents of who invented it, and who improved it to make it viable. The latter of course is claimed by seamen and the Protestant Drakes were not shy. Then of course we have tools, like the chronometer, developed after the Catholic Protestant schisms.

My fascination with engineering is only rivalled by my total incompetence at it.

But returning to your point I feel the universities were not repositories of scientific knowledge, but more arenas for academic debate. I think we have to look at the teaching hospitals (I know they were eventually linked to the Universities)  the military academies, the Ships' Warrant Officers (Capt Bligh, for example) teaching young midshipmen who became Commissioned Officers, the Legal Practices.

In summary, I think those were the days wherte it mattered more under who you studied rather than where you studied.

Cheers
Peter

The replica of the 1607 ship Discovery was in Bristol last week. I was amazed at how small it was, I had to ask several guides if it was really that small, 20 tons, and it was.
