This is a story of how mice had stolen fire from the condors of Condor Mountain and brought it to the people known as the Southern Maidu. An elder of the Maidu asked mouse to go to Condor Mountain and bring fire back for the people after one day seeing smoke rise far off in the distance and mouse agreed. Two mice fashioned a canoe and set off to the mountain where the fire was to be found. Upon arrival they realized that there were many condors so they sabotaged their canoes by chewing through the grape vines that held them together, so that they may not follow them in their escape. The mice chewed the sinew of their bows so that they may not shoot them from afar. The Mice found the meeting house with the condors standing in a ring about the fire fast asleep. They chewed through their feathered wings whilst they slept and stole off with fire. The elder condor awoke and the condors gave chase to the mice, finding that there bows had been sabotaged, the condors climbed into their canoes but they fell apart and, thus the mice made good their escape. With their return fire proved invaluable to the Maidu people who learned to cook their food and keep warm with its use.
