Janus As we look forward to the New year and backwards to the old year it is only fitting that we think of Janus. He was the Roman god of beginings and as mentioned before it is for him that the month of January was named. He was commonly portrayed as a man with two faces, sometimes with one face bearded and mature while the other clean shaven and youthful. (Father time? baby new year?) His two faces were evident of duality and he was the god of Doorways and gates, a entity always inbetween two different realities. As part of his identity statues of him commonly showed him with a staff for his role of porter and a key. He was the opener and closer of doors, of possibilities. He had no Greek counterpart and was that strange bird in Roman culture as being a True Latin God with very little trapings of greek culture to dress him up in . The first Temple to Janus was said to have been built by the legendary Numa , the first of 7 mythical Kings of Rome. In the Anead when Aneas comes to Rome this temple is said to already exist amongst the latin people. This in my mind further confirms this god's ancient origins. This temple was extremely important to the Roman's State Cult. It's doors were to be open in times of War and closed in times of Peace. Augustus boasted of closing the doors of the temple of Janus and so did Nero. a coin Nero struck commemorating this fact though he didn't keep them shut for long and soon had to stop minting these coins He is called the "Gods' God" and is also the Porter of the heavens. He was honored not only in the month of January but had sacrifices in his honor on the first day of every month, as well as the begining of plowing and the begining of the harvest. His blessing was also invoked at personal times such as a child's birth or marriage. In any sacrifice to any god, first Janus had to be honored so as to ensure a good begining to the ritual. His festival was held on January 9th. His two most famous children were Tiberinus, the river god of the Tiber river and Fons the god of springs. Here are some more websites to further read about this deity. |

Race2three, you didn't disappoint me. In fact, I've been meaning to welcome you to History Page and tell you how much I appreciate the way you've presented yourself here. I enjoy reading what you've written. You've brought back to the surface some very good discussions and I was reminded of some good members who've left us for whatever reasons. One has returned and the other, Lew, had computer problems back in, let's see, 2004 I guess it was, and hasn't been heard from since. Again, welcome to History Page! sunday, Asst. Mgr. |
