I believe that is the 3 Gorges Dam site you mean.  The coffins are only a small part of the cultural things that will be covered/destroyed by the dam's waters.

Oh yes, I do find it extremely interesting.  But China needs the benifits 3 Gorges will give them in power production, irrigation, etc.  It is too bad that some of their ancient history will be destroyed by the rising waters but, in this case, it is a necessary evil.  Also, they have been doing yeomans work on saving what they can.  The Egyptians had the same problem with Aswan & Lake Nasser.

Did Egypt do that much to save the treasures.  I got the impression just about everyone else worked on saving history and the Egyptians were sort of laid back on the subject.

Snow,  The situation was so dire that Egypt offered 1/2 of everything found or moved to the countries that came to help.  The Egyptians recognized the expertise and basicly gave them their head but the Egyptian people themselves worked to save what they could.  If you should ever see the Temple of isis, you'll know that it was all worth the effort.  My God it is a beautiful thing.

We British laugh at the Egyptians. I studied Arabic under an Egyptian professor who could give us example of grammar and pronunciation in Latin, German, french and English totally effortlessly.
The one way to get him to deviate was to talk about Egypt's past. I employed 40-60 Ex-Egyptian Army security guards. One offered me some spinach soup. he said "You will like this; the Pharoahs were very fond of it" as if he'd just served Tutankhamun yesterday.
Be they the very black "Upper" Egyptians, (Southern) or the white skinned blue eyed Alexandrines, they had this fierce pride in their heritage.
Good people.
