The ancient world had many snake snake cults and other pegan faiths. But it seems that the Hebews turned the serpent into a demonic figure and as well as other gods such as Dagon among others. The goat designated by lot for the Lord is to be used as a sin offering, while the goat designated for Azazel "shall be left standing alive before the Lord, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness to Azazel" Aaron was to "lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their sins, putting them on the head of the goat; and it shall be sent off to the wilderness by someone designated for the task. Thus the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness". (wikipedia) one of the chief Grigori, a group of fallen angels who married women and gave birth to a race of giants. He also gave women cosmetics and men metal working and weapons. He was believed to be another one these many pagan gods who is given the form of a great bird of prey and satan had been confused with as well as the satyr like appearance which was one the common images given to this demon. Why? I mean if tolerance had been the way of the Hebrews they would not be hated and persecuted by the Egyptians,Babylonians, canaanites, philistines,Romans among many. If they did not rebell against Rome they would not have had suffered so much at the hand of the Romans. If they would have paid homage to Ceasar (tolerance) they would not have had so a difficult a time with Rome. I am not preaching hate or intolerance here...but the Jews brought it upon themselves when they decided to isolate themselves and alienate their more powerfull neighbors. Two issues here and endless opinions to be heard I hope.

The Romans didn't particularly care what the Jews did as long as they did it quietly and paid their taxes in full and on time.   As to the cult of the deified Caeser, the Jews told the Romans that while they'd be happy to pray  FOR Caeser, their religion didn't allow them to pary TO him.  I believe that Jesus was the only Jew ever put on trial for this, so it couldn't have been that big a thing.
Satan has horns & a tail because most other religions were fertility based and their Gods had horns & tails.  When you set out to impose your religion on others, it is a great help to your cause to demonize the Gods you want to be-little and, eventually, destroy.    The biblical story of the scape-goat is seen, by many ( not all)biblical scholars, as a metaphor for the Hebrew tribes' transition from human to animal sacrifice.
You want to blame the Hebrews for the hatred of their neighbors?   I agree with you that they were an obnoxiois bunch, but their main complaints were any attempt to regulate their religion, the occupation of their land by a foreign force, and the imposition, by that outside force, of a King more loyal to Rome than to their people (sound familiar?) .   The Christians hate the Jews because they are programmed to.  The Church taught (probably still does)  that Jews are 'Christ's Killers' and anything a Christian does against them is OK with the Lord..  It probably has more to do with the Jewish money lenders/bankers who financed many of the Crusaders and other Christian endevors and then were cheeky enough to demand payment in full & on time.  When they became insistent, the old hog-wash about the Crucifixion resurfaced and provided the debtors with an excellent excuse not to pay.  The Christian church backed this view because it not only cancelled its debts, but it also got a cut from the confiscated treasures.

ps. there weren't many snake cults, although the Egyptians did hold that the snake Set/Seth was one of the Gods.  What it was, many religions believed that their Gods lived in the Earth and so did snakes but rather than being Gods themselves they were messengers to the Gods.  To the early monotheists the messengers were just as guilty as the Gods they took messages to.  More political manuverings.

The snake cults predate Egypt and date back from the neolithic. Ceasar demanded to be wroshipped as well as taxes. This is why the Jews rebelled. This is not jew hate but just the plane truth. They cry about it...oh woe is me! but it is them who do it all to themselves. Snake cults and Azazel is a demon they make sacrifice to in order to escpe their races sins. The goat demons who haunt the wilderness are the earlier gods that predate Judea,Egypt,Rome,Greece etc. etc. etc.The serpent in the garden of eden was made demonic and no it was not satan. As for killing christ that is another matter. Christ was one of them after all. They the jews are hypocritical since they often accepted the gods of the local people of the lnd they were trying to settle in. Many jews left their tribes and wroshipped pagan gods.
