To pass under the yoke was an ancient Italian practice to disgrace and humiliate an army ya have defeated in battle.  Sometimes death was perfered to have to face the disgrace of passin' under the yoke.  Two spears where set up opposite each other vertically then a third was placed horizontal tween the two.  It looked somethin' like the letter H.  Then the defeated army was made to pass under it while they were laughed and jeered at.  It is from this practice of passin' under the yoke that we get the word subjugate, which means to subdue or conquer.  Subjugate comes from the Latin words sub, under and jugum, a yoke.
