I heard on the news today that Britain has at last finished paying it's war debt to America. Don't know how the Americans are going to continue to finance the war in Iraq, not that steady stream of income has dried up:)
Thanks
Jimbert

Sorry sunnyboy, that is still outstanding, and since most of the countries that took part have disappeared, it will never be repaid.

If Germany had continued with the war reparation schedule set out in 1919 the last payment wouldn't have been made until 1983.
GB owed the USA nothing in WW I, more like the reverse as it was us who shipped your soldiers over here and equipped them. You owe us.

AS FOR BRITAIN OWEING CANADA FLASH, I'M NOT SURE.
I THOUGHT THAT MUCH MIGHT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN OFF OVER TIME.
THE BRITISH POUND WAS KEPT HIGH DURING THE WAR WHEN IT REALLY SHOULD HAVE DROPPED. THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED PROBLEMS WITH ANY REPAYMENT LATER.

Mark and PBA

$83.25 million USD and 22.7 million Canadian Dollars were repaid as the final instalments on 29 December 2006.

83.25 millions USD at the agreed rate of 2% represents a principal in 1945 of 6.296 million USD (25.373 million GBP).  Looking at purchasing power, this means you would now need 275.297 million USD in todays money to buy the same amount as in 1945, a loss on the deal of 192 million USD.  Caveat emptor USA!!

By the way, Britain is still owed, and owes, billions of pounds in war loans and costs from WWI.  However, since a moratorium on all war debts agreed at the height of the Great Depression, no debt payments have been made to or received from other nations since 1934.

Problem.
I make an SMLE, or a Stokes Mortar, or a Sopwith Camel

I charge you for the material and delivery cost and profit margin. Do I get paid for R&D which for Aircraft and battlships etc can only be subdivided into a few units?

I don't care what you make.  On those terms, you would be out of business in quick time.  Quite clearly, your cost effective analysis is flawed.  Try again!!  (and no cribbing).

IT MAY HAVE BEEN BETTER TO HAVE LOST THE WAR, AT LEAST THAT WAY THE STATES WOULD HAVE REBUILT YOU LIKE GERMANY OR JAPAN.
ALL IN ALL IT WAS MONEY WELL SPENT AND IN TRUE BRITISH FASHION YOU UP HELD YOUR END OF THE BARGAIN AND REPAID SCHLOCK HIS POUND OF FLESH.
WHO KNOW'S, MAYBE BRITAIN CAN OFFER THE SAME DEAL TO THE STATES SOME DAY. MAYBE EVEN SELL THEM OIL.

I suggest when you think of me sitting in my Colchester apartment, you should care what I'm making.
I am just thinking of simple profit and loss. I'm not including amortisation of plant, premises etc.
So tell me, O Guru, where I am going wrong.

Britain and America are inextricably connected....what happens to one will happen to the other. There is no escaping that fact nor an sense in denying it.

So Peter B, my boy (sorry PBA expects the Petticoat Lane touch) for 2 years I'm crossing your palm with silver to keep secrets, and now, Bubbala, I'm crossing your palm to learn secrets?
Isn't this, oy vay, a trifle one sided? Like who's got the V6 BMW and who the diesel Xantia?
