It seems some wing-nut has taken out his girlfriend problems on the students at Virginia Tech. 33 people including the gunman are dead. Must we lock ourselves down in fortresses, or go about armed to the teeth just to get by in this country?

I know we'll never get to a perfect world, but something should be done to protect people, question is, what?

" think the main reason these shootings are on the rise is the sensationalism by the media.  if the media just stuck to reporting the facts and nothing but the facts you would see a decrease in all of that mischief. "

.......correct.  Look at the newspapers and TV showing this nut brandishing his guns like the terminator.   It encourages other nuts who are contemplating going out in a blaze of violence

"By the way guns don't kill, people kill."

......trouble is, where there are both guns and people, people will always get killed. You will always get nuts like this. The problem boils down to either eliminating all guns OR keeping guns out of the hands of these nuts.

" I am a gun owner I have owned several guns and never shot any one...not to say I didn't want to."

.......most people are responsible. The others are the problem. Maybe the overall system has to be changed to deal with those few.

I still say what's the problem? We have a huge bureauocracy (spelling?) in place for taxing and tracing car drivers. If we add gun ownership to it, and enforce lessons and testing, and annual production at Police stations........
We start by erecting large concentration camps, into which we herd people city by city. We then search their vacated premises, and body search them in the camps.
this should, in one afternoon, determine the exact location of every single weapon in the USA.
All weapons are then confiscated from ethinic minorities (especially the Scots) and issued to property owners of Northern Eurpean descent.

Does anyone recall the movie Crockadile Dundee? Their is a scene in the movie where a mugger confronts him with a knife and tells him to give him his wallet.  Dundee says "do ou call that a knife?  This is a knife", while he pulls out a skinning knife abou a foot long.   Now if this sword weilder wantsa a crowd  I suggest NY Times Square.  If he pulled out a sword before he got it out of the hilt he would have been shot so many times he would look like swiss cheese.

Good point, Snowbird.

I remember that movie.  The knife scene was good.

Repete, still worried about your heavily armed neighbors to the South I see.  Well I'm back for awhile and have all of mine under control so you can sleep secure.   Be polite to MarkGB, remember he's English.

DURING THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WARS THE COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES CAME TO BRITAIN'S AID.
IF TOMORROW AMERICA INVADED CANADA, WOULD BRITAIN COME TO CANADA'S AID??

Why did we train annually near Medicine Hat? Alberta has 8 x the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia, and at $66 a barrel, they're sitting on a goldmine. (Yesterday's Google).
However, all that oil income will be given to the Crow Indians.

Blacktaz, both actually.   Everytging that cuts is sharp and everything that shoots is loaded (except the muzzle loaders) and I carry my handgun in combat condition A.  My neighborhood is still fairly rural and the people in it (a lot of Vets) like the same type of peace & quiet as I do so even though we are all  armed it is a pretty quiet  and VERY polite place.

Gotta agree with your post...   the media has given way to being intertainment rather than a gateway for information.  Given equal opportunity to present a car on fire along a freeway in Washington, D.C. and a vote that would cost us any one of our civil rights completely,  we would be watching a car burrning along the roadway.

as for guns.  I think everyone should have the right to bear arms (given the exception for criminals with a violent history).  Personally,  I spent some time with guns.  I find they are loud, obnoxious and ussually are used to do harm to some one or some thing.   I have no reason to have one now...

I wanted to add a line here about the posts I expect... guess I'll wait to see them.

Steven you should know by now the violence of my responses is well tempered by my opponent's slavish agreement with my points, or his familiarity with the British Carribean banking system.  No Cheques.

People warning of their expected unpopularity are normally issuing a coded plea for mercy, or are sado masochistic flagellants (see Lou Reed, Venus in Furs) or have never met T-Dog.
