Pardon me, I don't mean to butt-in...I'm trying to find a place where the Bejing Olympics controversy is being discussed...new member trying to navigate this site while observing protocal...where might this be being discussed? Thanks.

The Chicoms will probably use this as a reason to further crack down on the tibetans.

I don't know whether to feel proud that we can demonstrate like this in our country or embarassed that the whole farce was shown across the world. At least it wasn't confined to London; Paris and San Francisco had similar trouble too. I doubt if the torch event thing will take place before the London 2012 Olympics, it'll be dropped, it was a NAZI idea anyway from the 1936 Games.

The 1936 Games were blighted by the cheating drug crazed activities of the Yank Jesse Owens.
Ever since then the Yanks only win events by the assistance of a cartload of crack.
We British win honourable and decently. Without having to raid the local penitentiary for competitors.

MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT IT WILL PUT ANY FORWARD MOVEMENT ON CHINA'S HUMAN RIGHTS BACK A FEW STEPS. WE WERE JUST STARTING TO GET THEM ON TRACK TO ACTING LIKE A CIVILIZIED NATION IN TRADE AND COOPERATION WHEN THIS HAPPENED.
IT APPEARS TO BE A WELL ORGANIZED PROTEST WHICH WAS WELL PLANNED BY CLOSE SUPPORTER OF THE DELI LAMA.
CHINA HAS EVER RIGHT TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER WITHIN THEIR BORDERS AND AS OF NOW TIBET IS STILL PART OF CHINA.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE PROTESTS YOU WILL FIND THAT THEY REALLY AREN'T PEACEFUL IN NATURE WHICH TO ME ALWAYS HURTS YOUR CAUSE. IT'S THE TIBETIANS THAT ARE BURNING AND LOOTING THE SHOPS AND ATTACKING PEOPLE. NOT THE CHINESE.
LET THE GAMES CONTINUE AS PLANNED.

unfortunetly politics will always be mixed with sport it has happened loads of times over the years, the trouble is the chinese do not care what the world thinks and will take all forms of action to stop protests ie(tinnamen square),in my eyes china should never have been given the olympic games its only common sense you only have the governing bodies to blame, ive always thought for a long time that the games should be permanently in athens were it was created.seafire

The PRC should never have been awarded the games in the first place. It is 1936 all over again with a communist instead of a fasicist state playing lets look nice. What happened in San Francisco yesterday was very poor optics, that is it looks bad. Bur the true travesty will be if every head of state goes to Bejing and acts like the PRC is a good global citiizen, and ignores the occupation of & persecution in Tibet, their sales of weapons to states with equeally bad human rights records etc. I think the IOC should grow up and realize that they are not free from politics and need a idea of what is acceptable behaviour by a state bfore awarding the games. I hope that London 2012 & Vancouver 2010 won't be marred by such carrying ons as has been seen this last while.

Seafire, you're right about how deeply the Chinese really care about the rest of the World's opinion of its human rights record.    The problem is that now we all have to 'appear' to be interested and that is interferring with business.   The Games will never be permenently held in any country, there is entirely to much national prestige associated with the them and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much money for one country to get it all, all the time.

vicbo, expecting politicians to grow up will not happen until after, long after, the Kalends of Greece.

The pictures coming out of China present a very disappointing image of Tibet, Lhasa looks such a dump. I'd imagined it to be full of temples and jasmine trees, but it looks like a run down part of Manchester.

As far as I am concerned the Olympics have been a sham since the Irish sunbathing champion Owens allegedly won in 1936. I was bribed by the promise of the Sudetenland, but someone stole it back. And killed 2,000,000 Germans in the process.

We don't have any Tibetan fast food places in Colchester, so what's the fuss about.?
British Labour gave it to the Chinese in 1948. Do they want to give it back or something?
