Yesterday the Monarchy in Nepal was abolished with barely a whimper to be replaced by a "democratic" Republic which is definately of a Leftist nature. Nepal is the first Monarchy to fall since Iran in 1979. The last King, Gyanendra, was extremely unpopular and authoritarian which hastened the end. He succeeded to the throne after his brother King Birendra and several members of the Royal Family were massacred by Crown Prince Dipendra who went mental with a gun in 2001. Had he lived the Monarchy would probably have survived. They'll regret it when it all goes wrong.

Even over here with our strong links with Nepal it has barely been reported. It must be due to the fact that it was all so sudden and relatively peacefully done. No storming of the Palace etc. I'm amazed at the speed of it, I expected the new Parliament to meet to set a date for the abolition of the Monarchy, but no, they met and voted it out in a day.
