Today, in an underground laboratory in Switzerland, an experiment is taking place which is far too complicated for me to understand, but some scientists are saying it might result in the creation of a mini black hole that will expand and swallow up the Earth. So as we here in Europe are closer to the lab than you in north America, just keep a watch on these pages to see if we European members suddenly stop posting, if so you'll know we expired in the name of science and you won't be long behind us.

Tiger,

"Can you at least tell us the purpose of this high-risk experiment while there
is still time?"

Of course it's for the advancement of our understanding of the universe, you silly little bird.

Mark,

"...if we European members suddenly stop posting, if so you'll know we expired in the name of science and you won't be long behind us. "

And in those fractions of a millisecond that we have to follow in your wake, we'll say a little prayer for you.

Here's a link to an article about this particle accelerator:

It's something to do with creating the conditions that existed at the dawn of time when the universe was created, although what good that'll do us is beyond me.
All OK here still, but wait ! what's that ? Oh sorry, it's just a black rain cloud passing over.

I don't think I like this atom smasher thing.

It's six billion quids worth. I believe it can be used to create an energy source.

Tiger, you're safe, as long as you remain on the other side of this screen

I thought they created the atomic bomb with an atom smasher.

It takes a tremendous amount of electricity to fire up all of the magnets needed to get these protons flying through the 17-mile corridor at near light speed. That's just getting one stream going in one direction. In order to get them smashing into one another, you have to get two streams going simultaneously in opposite directions around the circuit, which would double the electric/magnetic requirement.

Black holes, even small ones, require an enormous amount of matter to be concentrated into a tiny space. The mass of our entire solar system would not be enough to fulfill this requirement.

The only folks that have anything to worry about concerning this particle accelerator are those unfortunate to live near enough to it that will experience their lights dimming when they fire this thing up.

The Atom Collider has developed a fault and will be out of action for at least two months. We might get to see Christmas then.

Maybe it's the black hole and they aren't telling us...

Apparently they have to close the thing during winter because they can't run it and Geneva at the same time.  I'm sure the Swiss can do without heat in the interests of science.

The thought did cross my mind. It might be like a sci-fi film; the machine has malfunctioned and the scientists daren't tell us until it's too late.

They used it yesterday.  They also had numerous reports of UFO's and some are making a connection between the use of the excelerator and the men from Mars.
