Where does the word ottoman come from? That area was called "outremer" in the middle ages, and since it does sound similar... and of course outremer in French means "sea border" or something along that line...

The name Ottoman comes from Osman the leader of a nomadic tribe who settled in north west Turkey in about 1300. In Arabic his name was Othman, since corrupted to Ottoman.
