Queen Elizabeth's Favorite for decades was this man Robert Dudley.  He is described in many diferent ways, from heartless manipulator to diehard romantic.  What was he in truth.  His wife Amy died in mysterious circumstances.  She was found dead at the foot of a staircase.  Some say that he killed her in hopes of marrying Elizabeth.  Others say that his enemies killed his wife just to prevent him ever marrying Elizabeth as his wife was already reportedly ill.  If she died naturally his hopes of marrying Elizabeth might have come true, but as a man with such a tarnished reputation the politically astute Elizabeth could never consent to wed him even if she had wanted to. Many modern historians also now speculate that his wife suffered from breast cancer and may have stumbled down the stairs because of this malady and in fact no murder at all took place but an accident or maby even a suicide as she was ill and her husband was famously unfaithful to her.

So what do you think?  Did Dudley murder his wife or not?  What is your opinion of this Tudor mystery?

As a general rule I don't go in for conspiracy theories, so my guess is that it was an accident. She was certainly ill and I imagine she got up in the night in pain and fell down the stairs as she stumbled about in the dark.

THANKS MARK FOR PUTTING THE END TO WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD MURDER MYSTERY FOR US ALL TO FIGURE OUT, BUT NOW IT'S SIMPLY AN ACCIDENT.
WHY WOULD SHE BE GOING DONE STAIRS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IF SHE WAS TRUELY SICK.
SURELY A WOMAN OF HER STATURE WOULD HAVE ALL THE TOILETRIES OUTSTAIRS IN HER ROOM OR COULD  HAVE HAD THEM EASILY BROUGHT TO HER. THE SAME FOR FOOD OR DRINK. THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR HER TO GO DOWN STAIRS TO CHECK ON ANYTHING. THE SERVANTS WOULD ANSWER ANY KNOCK AT THE DOOR. IF SOMEONE DID COME TO THE DOOR, SHE WAS SICK, AND SO SHE WOULDN'T BE RECIEVING GUESTS.
THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD HAVE BROUGHT HER DOWN STAIRS IN A HURRY WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERSON. A PERSON THAT SHE WOULD HAVE KNOWN WELL. NOT JUST A SERVANT BUT A CLOSE PERSON LIKE HER HUSBAND OR A LOVER. THIS IS NO MERE ACCIDENT MARK.

You'll be telling me next that Marilyn Monroe and Diana, Princess of Wales were murdered. I've got a book somewhere with a good account of Amy Robsart's death, so I'll read up on it.

I've even heard that it was Elizabeth herself who had Amy killed because she was so jealous.  I don't believe it for a minute.  Elizabeth was married to England and had no intention whatsoever of marrying anyone.

She died of an accidental drug overdose. Not as exciting as murder or suicide, but the most likely explanation. No third party was directly involved.
