The Court of King Philip II of Spain wore black because it was his choice of colour for his own clothes. Despite the apparent grandiosity of his Empire Philip himself prefered a more simple lifestyle. He conducted the affairs of state from a small office in the vast Escurial Palace, the only marks of his wealth being his huge library and his obsession with collecting religious relics. He invariably wore black and thus it became the colour of the entire Court.
