Courland's stronghold developed in 1944.10.16. when russian army attacked Riga and Klaipeda. So 32 German divisions, one Latvian division and one combined Swedish, Norwegian and Dutch division was embattled Courland. They holded Courland till the end of war and didn't let russians to occupy Latvia. These few divisions hoped that UK and USA will help them to fight against communism and don't let them to occupy Latvia, but the Allies didn't help us and communists occupied us for 60 years.
Why did they betray us ??

Excuse me if I'm wrong but were not those division fighting for the Nazis and so were enemies. I for one would not have wanted one allied life to be lost on account of quizlings and traitors.

In 1945 when the allies defeated the Germans the war had been prolonged by volunteers from European countries occupied by the Germans bolstering their fighting capacity. These  volunteers had a reputation for fighting to the end costing thousands of allied lives at the same time as the allies were fighting to free their own countries.

The Latvians, Ukrainians, etc had a reputation equel to the SS Sonder Commandos for their enthusiasem for the murder of civilians.

So perhaps their occupation was poetic justice

Further to Arnies` reply I completely agree- why should the western allies have helped a lot of die hard Nazis in their death throes? There could never have been any support at any time amongst the allies for such a course of action, it would have in fact have led the USA and UK into deep hot water with the Soviet Union. To a great extent Hitler got what he wanted with the Eastern war, the strongest survived, and the weakest, ie Nazi Germany and its allies perished. Yhis was always the rationale on which war in the East was predicated by Hitler.
