A new book has been published by Claude Ribbe, entitled "Le Crime de Napoleon" (The Crime of Napoleon).

Claude Ribbe, a French historian, has caused uproar by claiming Napoleon provided the model for Hitler's Final Solution with the slaughter of more than 100,000 Caribbean slaves.

In The Crime of Napoleon, Claude Ribbe accuses the emperor of genocide, gassing rebellious blacks more than a century before the Nazis' extermination of the Jews.

His accusations refer to the extreme methods used to put down a ferocious uprising in Haiti at the start of the 19th century. Then known as San Domingo, the colony was considered a jewel of the French empire and to save it troops launched a campaign to kill all blacks aged over 12.

"In simple terms, Napoleon ordered the killing of as many blacks as possible in Haiti and Guadeloupe to be replaced by new, docile slaves from Africa," Ribbe said yesterday.

He said he had found accounts from officers who refused to take part in the massacres, especially the use of sulphur dioxide to kill slaves held in ships' holds.

His book is already provoking controversy prior to its publication on Thursday. The newspaper France Soir juxtaposed images of Napoleon and Hitler yesterday before asking: "Did Napoleon invent the Final Solution?"

But in an editorial, it condemned the "inanity" of Ribbe's argument. Ribbe, 51, who is of French-Guadeloupe extraction, said he was unrepentant.

"I want the French to know exactly what happened in that period," he said. "As for the good things Napoleon did, that is irrelevant. Hitler developed the autobahns and inspired the Volkswagen; are we supposed to excuse him for his war crimes?"

Ribbe, who was recently appointed a human rights commissioner by the prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, added: "I was taught to think of Napoleon as a superstar. To mention his crimes against humanity has been a taboo."

You see, poor immigrant boy like me an' I get it from both sides of the Atlantic.
And on the odd day JimBert's at home, the Pacific too.
Reverting to the original subject matter, I spent some time in Guadeloupe in 1963.
Wheras in the UK and I am sure the USA the kids used to play British/Yanks against German (and the World against JimBert) in Guadeloupe, it was French against British. The owner (a French travel Agent for Messageries Maritimes, the equivalent of Cunard) showed me a sub-machine gun, and sniggered, "pour les negres, hein?"
There is a strange rumour about that I'm no bleeding heart liberal; (honestly, T-Dog) but that showed a kind of sadness.
Cheers

During the Napoleon's conquests, he didn't have the time to deal with killing Caribbean slaves; this came later in French history. Even Napoleon sold the Louisianna Purchase to President Thomas Jefferson because he needed money for his exploits.

As you know the Jews lived very well during the Napoleon's Empire.

The spanish used the final solution while colonizing the new world as well. Conquistadors brought the padres with them. Used the sword on the Indians if they would not convert to Christianity. Figured they were better off dead than remaining "heathens."

If you want examples of how to run an Empire follow the British, of how not to run one follow the Spanish.

I'm sorry, Mark.
I totally disagree. We lacked brutality and monoculturalism. Look at the buggers now, mincing around the United Nations talking about civil rights instead of being busy shipping us their hippo hides and gold-dust.
Cheers

Being a Roman Catholic which of course is the true Christian Church (Peter being the lst Pope) I consider you "johnny come lately" Protestants heathens too. My marriage to the evil Protty Scot was not even recognized as such by holy mother the church. Unfortunately the judge did not agree. He gave her my house. But I am not bitter, I am not bitter, I am not bitter, I am not bitter, I am not bitter.

I'm still at the separated stage. They won't let me in to retrieve my 16 bore Browning though.

Bouzer is right. Anyone who owns a 16 gauge sits down to pee.

Used to have a drilling; 2 x 8mm and 1 x 16 bore barrels. The Germans favoured 16 bore because it fitted nicely between the 2 rifle barrels. They were true cylinder, for the slugs.
Agreed, 10 bore 3" chamber is nice. Don't you sit down to read your magazines when you pee? Or do you get the boyfriend to read them out aloud? Hell's fairies style.
