We could soon have another tiddly little country barely able to support itself in Europe. Montenegro, formerly part of Yugoslavia, has voted for independence from it's larger neighbour Serbia. Montenegro was independent once before from 1878 to 1918 when it was absorbed into the newly created Yugoslavia. This will mean that Serbia will be without a coastline and it's navy and naval bases will be under Montenegrin control.

League of Nations, Balfour Declaration. It was you put pressure on us to leave Suez.
The world would be a better place if we were in charge. Or King Farouk

It was the American Jewish Land Agency which purchased big chunks of Palestine for Jewish settlement, during the First Aliyabet of 1890's. They purchased from Turkish Landlords who were very pleased to see such industrious Settlers.
The Jews formed a Jewish Brigade and fought for us against the Turks, as did the Arabs. So everybody loved us

Go join your Muslim pals with Mark and PBA , but first read "Exodus". And check the Jewish Land agency.

Before the 1890's there were a few nomadic Jewish people, but very very few.

The Jewish National Fund (Hebrew: קרן קימת לישראל, Keren Kayemet LeYisrael) (JNF) was founded in 1901 to buy and develop land in Palestine (later Israel) for Jewish settlement. By 2006, it owned 14% of the land in Israel

The JNF was founded at the Fifth Zionist Congress in Basel upon an earlier suggestion by Zvi Hermann Schapira to create an organization to buy and develop land in Palestine for Jewish settlement.

The JNF received its first parcel of land - a 50-acre plot in Hadera - as a gift from philanthropist Isaac Goldberg. In 1904 and 1905, the JNF purchased land plots near the Sea of Galilee and at Ben Shemen. In 1921, JNF land holdings reached 25,000 acres (100 km²), rising to 50,000 acres (200 km²) by 1927. At the end of 1935, JNF held 89,500 acres (362 km²) of land housing 108 Jewish communities. In 1939, 10% of the Jewish population of the British Mandate of Palestine lived on JNF land. Overall, during the British Mandate period, the JNF purchased about 94 km² of land, largely from Arab landowners. From the beginning, JNF's policy was to lease land long-term rather than sell it.

As to Montenegro at the top of this forum. I seem to remember it being independent, perhaps before the First World War?

Ref # 14. Montenegro had a measure of independence within the Ottoman Empire from the Middle Ages. But full independence was only granted in 1878 after Turkey was weakened by her defeat in the Russo-Turkish War. Montenegro was forcibly encorporated into the Kingdom if the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) in 1918, although the deposed King headed a government in exile until his death in 1921.

You'll need a beard and a wild look about the eyes.

There's a world of unfulfilled perversion in this. It was issued to Hapsburg subjects only, and fired a .44 black powder round. Notice slim and slippery butt.Only encountered in Montenegro, the users remained very quiet about its second usage.

There was a Montenegran restaurant in Bad Kreuznacht that my friends and I went to quite often.  Each course came with a shot of slivovitch (fruit brandy).  I was the only one who liked it so everybody gave me theirs.  Sometimes the only reason I didn't stagger home was the fact that you can't stagger while you're low crawling.  When I aam King then I'll host a get together of the History Page Rangers.

Ref # 24. The claimant to the throne of Montenegro is 63 year old Prince Nikola (Nicholas). He is the great-grandson of the last King, he lives in exile in France.
