A new report just out that Cancer will overtake Heart disease as the major killer worldwide in 20 years.  Smoking cigarettes is the major cause of this increase in cancer deaths & of course is preventable if people would just quit the habit.  Smoking has decreased dramitically in the U.S.  due in part to educational programs & awareness fostered upon us for the past 2 decades.  However there is a dramatic increase in smokers in India & China at the same time.  They don't want our cars but they do want our Marlboros.  Perhaps we just have to wait em out eh?

I stoped smoking 3 plus packs a day back in 1988.  Every now and then I still want one.

Do you feel better for it, Snow? Being a 120 mile a day commuter driver, I notice my windscreen stays clean much longer.

re 11   Yes Flash I feel better except my hunger is never satisfied.  I gained weight like a sponge in a fish pond.  True the inside of my car is cleaner and I use the ash tray for tooth picks and change.  When I look at the price of smokes now I say thank God.  They were $1.65 when I quit how much are they now I wonder.

I never really gained weight 'cause i stopped drinking too. That was 3-4 9% beers and a 1/2 bottle of scotch a day.

So how much of that $ 7.00 is socialists imposed taxes Flash?  I always got a kick out of Clinton, runnin' the first time sayin' he was for the workin' man.  Then when he got in office he raised taxes on tobacky, alcohol, gas and of course bullets.  Yep nothin' a workin' man would ever engage in.

Good question Normal, and as an ex Merchant Navy paragon I can give the answer. Yiou see if spirits or any other heavily taxed goods were damaged or destroyed the carriers could only claim the nett value. Not even loss of profit.
A packet of cigarettes was 6d = 1/24 of  £1 = 4p  so nowadays say 20x inflation £ .80 so tax is 606% of value for a pack costing £5.31. or 85% of the price is tax.

I think 70% of a gallon of petrol is tax. Peoplemoan about the Arabs and their oil, our govt makes more out of a barrel of Arab oil than the Arabs' do.
