RAF first as Taliban leader is killed by plane ... piloted remotely in Las Vegas

By Matthew Hickley
Last updated at 4:41 PM on 07th June 2008

The RAF has used an unmanned drone to kill a Taliban leader for the first time, the Mail has learned.

Two 'pilots', controlling the robot via satellite from an airbase outside Las Vegas, spotted a target thousands of miles away in southern Afghanistan.

They ordered the £10million Reaper drone to carry out an airstrike.

I HAVE SEEN THAT ONE ON THE MILITARY CHANNEL.
THE FAMILY OF AMERICAN STRIKER VEHICLES COULD ALSO BE CONVERTED PRETTY EASY.

OK PBA cut to the  chase

M102 105mm Cannon

This is the M102 105 gun as fitted to Spectre, with 100 rds.
Gun weight is 1.5 tons, with ammn say 100 lb per rd. payload is 10,000 lb
So Reaper could carry that gun plus 50 rds.

I'M SURE THE REAPER CAN CARRY CRUISE MISSLES.
MUCH BETTER TO DISTROY THE ENEMY FROM A FAR THAT UP CLOSE.

Cruise missiles weigh in the order of 4,000 lbs so yes.

Point is the launch stresses on the reaper.

Air launched Cruise missiles are generally drop launched about 200 feet away from the aircraft.

I doubt they will be able to pull this off as they can't overfly Iraq or Saudi Arabia.

Those Spectre gunships are something else. I've spoken to quite a few British soldiers who were grateful for them. One told me that the crews and were quite funny and always seemed to have southern accents. On one occasion they came over and the pilot said to them on the ground..... there's a lot of love coming down to you guys. Seconds later, the target disappeard in a cloud of dust and flying debris and this was just a few hundred yards infront of them. Amazing accuracy.

This is what I admire about Yank forces; their "can do" attitude.

Thanks Hobbs; I didn't know if they needed the T-Dog type booster rocket (See CNN Nunnery Secrets) to clear the mother craft.

James for your smartass friends on WW2
These give you an idea of what 20-30mm cannon shells look like.

The very first cannon. The anti-balloon 20 mm Becker Gun Franco Prussian war 1870.
Developed into the oerlikon cannon, 1920s
