In the current edition of the American Rifleman the learned editors have chosen what they say are the top infantry rifles of all time.  They were chosen based on a complicated formula & the top three are:

1)  U.S. Rifle, Cal. .30, M1 "Garand" - Designed by a Canuck John C. Garland who was an employee of the U.S. Armory. It was adopted in 1936 & by the time Germany & Japan surrendered their were 4 million of em in service.  It was the first successfull design capapble of firing a full-power rifle cartridge via semi-auto operation. The U.S. was the only nation to fully arm its troops with a self-loading design.

2)  The Avtomat Kalashnikov (AK-47) - Both rudimentary & revolutionary, Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK-47 is the most enduring & ever-present firearm designs today.  In service for over 60 years it was developed for the 7.62x39mm, a .30 cal intermediate cartridge that combines the pwer of a conventional rifle with the rate of fire & controllabiility opf a submachine gun. The simplicity of it extends to its design & manufacture making it the most popular battle rifle in the world.

3)  Mauser 98 - Developed by Paul Mauser the 98 has seen service in two World Wars & has it's jam-proof , non-rotating claw extractor makes it simple safety effective.  Every major country has copied the design with variations for their own battle rifles but most experts agree that the 98 Mauser is the best bolt action rifle ever built.

Now I know that the limeys will get their panties in a wad cause no Brit design made the top 3, & of course they will infer that since this poll was taken by the NRA that it is predudiced against them, but I shall let the suspense build & post the rifles rated 4 thru 6 later. As always, comments & insults are encouraged.

This actually inspired the AK47 in a way. Although the '47's a copy of the German Stgew 44.

In the old days the Germans had supplied the Broomhandle Mauser pistols on contract and the Russians loved the 7.63 round which was 9mm necked down to 7.62. Realising their troops were hitting nothing with rifles, they designed the PPSHs and issued them letting the troops spray them around and actually hitting something.

Tank rider punishment troops in particular, those were no-hopers.

Red Army infantry dismounting from a T-34 during operations against the German troops near Budapest in 1944.

You can see there a mixture of rifles and PPSHs

T-Dog there was this feller too, the PPS
In its infancy at Stalingrad; slower firing but full auto only, no drum mag option,'
note muzzle moulding acts as a muzzle brake so little climb, quite accurate,
Still made by the Chinese today. Reverted to wooden butt

No its the PPSH then. The giveaway is the 45 deg muzzle jacket.

You see notice how bad we Brits were. You've seen our Sten with the straight mag. Now, that held 32 rds of 9mm(same base width as the 7.62/Tokarev rd fired by the soviets) But you could not fill it without the filler which was an arm levering down through a box into the magazine top. You put the round below the arm and pressed it to force the round into the mag. othewrwise you'd only force about 20 rds.

Wheras with the curved mag (which we used later in the sterling) you could hand load all 32 rds. How many guys died for that pork barrel? Your grease gun. Could that load all ? or did you need a filler?

We had a grease gun in our arsenal at the PD when I joined in 67 along with a Thompson. Got rid of both of em when we "moderized."

I really enjoy reading about the guns you guys got to fire. All they ever gave us was M-1's but I really liked to shoot it.

THAT'S IT FLASH AND YES I'M LEFT HANDED. ALL OUR WEAPONS WERE RIGHT HAND EJECTION. OUR GAS MASK CANISTER WAS AS YOU CAN SEE BY MY OLD ONE THAT I SAVED FOR SANDING IN IS ON THE LEFT ALSO WHICH MADE IT HARD TO GET YOUR FACE IN CLOSE ENOUGH TO PROPERLY AIM. THE NEW ONES NOW HAVE THE CANISTER IN THE FRONT WHICH MAKES A LOT MORE SENSE.
