We all know that the Armistice ending WW I was signed 90 years ago today on 11 November 1918. But that same day Karl, Emperor of Austria-Hungary renounced the government of Austria and Hungary. Interestingly he did not abdicate as the German Emperor and all the minor German Kings and Princes had done. He simply relinquised the government in the hope that he could remain as a figurehead ruler until better times. He was not formally deposed until April 1919.

The Germans always had weak links for allies.  See Austria-Hungary in WWI & Italy in WWII.
