450 years ago today, on 17 November 1558, Mary I, Queen of England 1553-58 "Bloody Mary". died. Her death brought to an end England's brief return to the Catholic faith and saw the accession of her half-sister Elizabeth I. Interestingly on the same day Mary's Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Reginald Pole also died. In doing so he avoided any persecution he may have faced under the Protestant Elizabeth. |

Mary I is one of the more interesting of Great Britain's monarchs. She might have made a good Queen had she not been so influenced by Philip II. Her mother was certainly respectable enough. |

I've always felt sorry for her too, Mark. Philip didn't love her and I'm sure she knew it. She probably felt like a complete failure, being catholic, for not producing a lot of babies. Her mother surely carried a hatred for non-catholics after what happened to her. She probably carried a fear that Mary would be excluded from her rightful place, if not actually executed. Henry denied her legitimacy, so that no doubt caused her some head problems. An unfortunate girl to be sure, and very unfortunate for those who became her subjects. |

I think you are all forgetting why she was called Bloody Mary. She was a typical example of what will occur if a Catholic is ever allowed to rule in the UK again. She murdered 300 Prods. The only thing in her favour was she did wonders for Vodka and Tomato juice shares |

AND HERE I THOUGHT MARY JUST LOVED HER PASSION FOR VODKA AND TOMATO JUICE
IVAN THE TERRIBLE WAS AFTER BOTH MARY AND LIZZIE MORE LIZZIE THAN MARY
BUT LIZZIE WASN'T HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH HIM
EVERYONE KNEW THAT LIZZIE'S TRUE LOVES OF HER LIFE WAS MICHAEL TODD AND RICHARD BURTON |

#6 ONE Proddy's bad enough Why didn't she practice on the Catholics? After all her husband's fleet repopulated all of Southern Ireland with strange Arab-Spanish mixtures. |
