This discussion is about the so-called bushwhackers of the Kansas-Missouri border area in the years just before the Civil War started. A far as I'm concerned, it's one of the few really interesting parts of American history in general, and the Civil War in particular. I've done some research on the era dealing with such infamous characters as William Quantrill, Jesse James, and such. Quantrill led the attack which destroyed the Kansas city of Lawrence, and died in Kentucky, I believe. Jesse James went on to become an infamous bank robber and leader of the James gang, which robbed a train not far north of where I live in Iowa. |

One of these of course is Billy the Kid. This wanted notice is sometimes claimed as proof that no-one really knew his name, and all these names are one person. As is |well known Bill Brushy Smith claimed as late as the '50's he was Billy the Kid. |

Nevetsnaya, it is true that there are usually doubts about who died unless you're there to see it. Either the Yankees (who wanted him dead) or the Confederates (who didn't like him but were willing to use him) could have lied about Quantril beung dead or alive. Flash's post on Billy the Kid is a good example, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, John Dillinger, Elvis, Grace Kelly, and others have all been reported as alive long after their deaths. |

Lew, I'm sorry, no Elvis. He was murdered by the Soviets along with: Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin Brian Jones MamaCass Eliott Sandy Denny Because they had rescued music from the John Lennon Marxist propaganda themes and made it, it was felt, too middle class and intellectual. The Politburo had groomed Punk rockers to motivate their working class street fighters, but the time was not right. They were investing heavily in BBC DJs who were juggling the hit parades to ensure only Bubble Gum music was played as a memento to the '60s. And of course their Konspiratsia classes were pumping the expression "Conspiracy Theory" to blanket the truth. Peter . |

Listen Bloated capitalist Hyena running dog lickspittle Mark, when you come in from your nauseous afternoons spent grinding the faces of the poor in the company of your receding chinned merchant class toadies, reflect on the fact Hegemonism means the search for state or other influence of one group over another. We are many and you so few. Flashman X Right On!! |

I think that we somehow got off of the subject of the Civil War. I know I haven't posted in a while. I'll make up for it soon. |

My word no mention of William T. Anderson, or as he is better known Bloody Bill Anderson. The very man who had once said that he had killed so many federals that he had grown tired of killin' them. He of course was one of Quantrill's Confederate guerilla's. After Lawerence, Kansas though he and Quantrill, had a dispute which led to him departin' to form his own guerilla's. He was a man filled with absolute spite and hate for yankee's. Which is attributed to when the Yankee's had arressted two of his sisters along with nine other gals as southern sympathizer's. The problem was the buildin' they was detainin' them in was made structurally unsound when the yankee's tore down some of the walls to make room to house the gal's. So when the buildin' collapsed one of the gal's killed was one of his sister. So he declared a war of hate and revenge upon the Union. He was known for shootin' prisoners and absolute savagery as he and his men would scalp, mutilate and even decapitate those who where most unfortunate to cross his path. He of course led the raid on Centralia, MO. He even went as far as to tie the scalps of the Yankee's he had killed to the bridle of his horse. When finaly shot dead by Yankee troops it was said that a silken cord with 53 knots tied in it was found upon his body, with each knot of course representin' a federal he had killed. |

I believe his party piece was to tie captives one behind the other and see how deeply a bullet or ball would penetrate. But on the other hand propaganda creates some emotive tales. Like WW1 chaining soldiers to MGs. I'm sure every quartermaster woulkd have had such equipment in stock |
