On December 15, 1943, the Big Three (Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin) met at Tehran to discuss strategy. Roosevelt raised the subject of France's Asian colony, Indochina. He suggested that Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam be placed under a four-power trusteeship (the powers being the Big Three plus China) and placed on the road to independence. Stalin endorsed the proposal. Churchill opposed it. I wonder how events would have unfolded if all three had endorsed the proposal? sunday |

Thanks for the yard waste. Down here we build large mulch piles and let he refuse cook and turn it over a few times. It makes a great CHEAP fertilizer. In my little town and all the towns in the state Mulch all the leaves and grass clippings and make it availabel to the citizens of the town for their gardens. I get 5 yards delivered every other year. What is left over by the end of June is sold to the highest bidder. It makes a great cheap fertilizer. While on the subject of fertilizer Pete do you have any more advice for the people existing down here? |

Snowbird, I used to frequent Red Bank in the mid-70's. My friend's mother kept asking me why didn't I want to move from Virginia to New Jersey. She phrased it thus: "So what? You don't like New Joisey?" I needed a Philadelphia lawyer to get out of answering that one. I went to the beach up there and I remember cliffs. Do you know where I was? In April and October the beach was deserted and beautiful. sunday |

Sunday it sounds to me like you were at "Sandy Hook" or sometimes reffered to as the National Seashore. Some called it the Atlantic Highlands. If you did any hiking around you would have found some old gun implaceents going back to the Civil War and World War 2. Some of the guns are or I should say were still in place. It's operated by the Federal Govt. The Jersey Cost is great off season, I have been in as late as Thanksgiving body serfing and havinga ball. You can't beat taking a long walk either as the sumer sun gives way to the cooler fall weather. Kind of sad saying good bye to summer friends though, but life goes on, doesn't it? |

Thanks, Snowbird. That may well have been where I was. It was the most beautiful place in the world to me at the time. It was April and quite chilly. It was the first time I'd ever seen the ocean. Growing up in Illinois, I never thought I'd ever really see the ocean. It was the most awe-inspiring sight I'd ever experienced. So taken by the magnificence, I sat on the beach and cried. My mind raced at the thought of what was out there, how many ships had sailed, how many lives had been changed by a voyage, what bravery it would take to cross the Atlantic, how many sailors had died, and how big the fish must be. Whales are quite beyond my comprehension. I felt so small, so very small. While I sat there taking all this in, I noticed that the waves seemed to be coming a little closer each time they went out and came back to shore. Then they got a little more violent and slapped harder at the shore. Each wave, I felt, was reaching for me, trying to touch me. The sea herself was coming to me. It didn't take long to realize that if I sat there much longer I'd be swallowed up! And that is why I never, ever go to the beach in the summer. I need the whole beach to myself. Humans just seem to ruin the aesthetic quality. Yes, life does go on and we make some wonderful memories along the way. sunday |
