Hey guys, Thanks for all this info. Very interesting material, though that's easy for me to say at this distance. Last year, when I visited Amsterdam, on the way there from Oberhausen in Germany, the ICE (fast train that travels from country to country) that I was on broke down. I was traveling on my own, but luckily for me, I had befriended a young Dutch woman who helped me to navigate the numerous commuter trains I had to take from that point onwards. I remember one of the train stations in which I needed to switch trains was at Arnhem.

The Dutch get very sentimental about that.
PBA and I are veterans of the Vierdaagse march, AKA The Nijmegen marches, a 4 day march which takes you through the area.
And you're fed on watery ham and bread and watery potatoes the whole way.  Except, wearing green berets, we were fed by the Canadians. Breakfast trailer. bacon and eggs and waffles

The biggest flaw in Market Garden was that it had to be flawless to work.

Although well executed, there was no room for error.

PBA would have you believe that if it were planned and executed by Canadians, it would have been successful........................reading about canadians is like watching paint dry

SORRY ABOUT THE SIZE FLASH BUT I WAS COPYING THE PAGES FROM MY FATHER'S REGTS HISTORY BOOK. THE WHOLE PART OF THE READ WAS THAT IT MENTIONED ARNHEM AND NIJMEGEN AND THE SURROUNDING TERRAIN. IT ALSO MENTIONS THE BRITISH UNITS WHICH THE REGT SUPPORTED. I WAS SURPRISED WHEN IT MENTIONED 105MM MOUNTED ON SHERMANS AND THE LONGER 17 PDER. THE 17 PDERS I KNEW ABOUT BUT NOT THE 105MM.
YOU WILL ALSO NOTICE THAT THE WRITER DOESN'T GLORIFY WAR IN THE BOOK BY MENTIONING THE NUMBERS OF GERMANS OR ALLIED TROOPS KILLED DURING THIS ACTION.

It was the M4 assault howitzer Sherman. Good piece of kit. With APBC ammn it had a slightly better A/Tk capability than the 75mm too.

The 17pdr gun was the same as the T34/76's. Both were an old British 3" AA gun
which was withdrawn in favour of the 3.7"
