If I could go back in time I think I'd most like to be a WWI fighter pilot. I enjoy reading everything I can about the men who were the first to hunt in the sky. To this end I have always greatly admired two outstanding examples of this group, Captain Albert Ball, and Lt. Frank Luke Jr.
Frank Luke joined the 27th Aero Squadron on July 27, 1918 and on September 12th, brought down his first observation balloon. During the next 16 days Luke shot down 13 more balloons and 4 German aircraft making him the second highest scoring ace in the US Air Service.
On his last flight on September 29,1918 Luke brought down 3 balloons and was himself brought down by German Fokkers. He managed to crash land his machine and was approached by a squad of German soldiers who called on him to surrender. Luke pulled his pistol and opened fire and was killed in the ensuing gun battle.
Luke was awarded the Medal of Honor and Luke Air Force Base in Arizona is named in his honor.
