Outside An Loc there was this Hootch set up by the family of the Local headman that we used to call "Alice's Restaurant" Like the song says 'YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU WANT AT ALICE'S RESTAURANT" One of the favorite toys loved by the guys were AK-47's as they were far superior to the Reg Army Issues. There was this understanding we had "ASK NO QUESTIONS AND WE'LL TELL YOU NO LIES"
sorry about that - lost power This was very common throughout the Mekong Delta The hootches was the place to shop My Buddy was a Comic Book Fanatic and he could get the latest issues within a week of publication Once in a while the MP's would raid the hootches and shut them down - and they would be back in business within a day or so.. Our CO loved bourbon and as long as they threw in a Couple of Comp bottles of Kentucky Tavern each weekend - it was business as usual Was this considered "Trading with the enemy" ?? the bottom line was as long as the hootches were around doing their thing - "Charlie would leave us alone" which i think was a good tradeoff... AND THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS
Thanks, Magnaverse. This is the kind of historical information I love to learn about. Seems we always get the sanitized version or the version from a strictly military/strategic point of view.
Maybe, if we'd of paid a little more attention to doin our job instead of "greasin" the CO the outcome of that little tapdance might have been different. Just a thought.
hey tincan buddy LIKE THAT SONG IN THE BROADWAY HIT CHICAGO "you had to be there" Everyone got greased - Where do you think Gen Westmoreland got his Wine from wasn't the Local PX You needed stuff like Film or Razor Blades - you went to the hootches We did our job whenever the Brass let us You would think that Central Command would have taken a few lessons from the Frenchies
Sunday You know who really ran the show in Nam wasn't The Brass it was the TV Networks LBJ AND THE PENTAGON HATED GETTING BAD PRESS The war should have been over right after the Tet Offensive - they threw everything at us and we pushed them back - bottom line we whipped Charlie's ass bigtime They sent out peace feelers and the US refused to sit down and negotiate. That was when The North Vietnamese cross the DMZ in big numbers and the war dragged on for another five years...
