now i was wondering if anyone actually knows where "mooning" originated, you know the classic dropping of the pants.  has it been around forever and who started it??  is it common custom in any country to do this as a gesture of appreciation?
let me know your thoughts,

IT MUST HAVE STARTED BEFORE 1973 AS THAT'S WHEN I FIRST SEEN IT DONE.

WHILE WATCHING A MOVIE ON THE SIDE OF A VEHICLE WITH A WHITE SHEET AS A SCREEN, TWO FELLOW CANADIAN SOLDIERS AFTER TOO MUCH IN THE WAY OF DRINK, STREEKED AND THEN STOPPED AND MOONED US ALL IN EGYPT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS FUNNIER, THE PART WHEN ONE TRIPPED AND FELL OR THE LOOK ON THE POLISH OFFICERS FACES THAT WERE PRESENT AT THE TIME.

BOTH ENDED UP IN THE KITCHEN FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS HELPING OUT IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

A few months ago someone posted a piece about the French defenders at the siege of Caen (?) in 1346 mooning at the English attackers. If you were that person please step forward, your knowledge is needed here.

Here is one reference to the french mooning at crecy.  I would bet that the 'moon' has been around as long as any human wanted to offend another.

SO THEN I WAS RIGHT REDNECK, IT DID START BEFORE 1973.

I GUESS IT REALLY FIRST STARTED WHEN WE WERE STILL IN THE TREES. TWO OVERLY HAIRY BEASTS TAUNTING EACH OTHER FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE BRANCH. ONE TURNS AND EXPOSES IT'S HAIRLESS BACKSIDE IN A SHOW OF DEFIANCE.
WHO SAID HISTORY DOESN'T REPEAT IT'S SELF.

Hi all

The Maori traditionally used to show there wedding tackle to the enemy during the Haka. Does this count as mooning or is it just plain boasting?

The Maoris also moon to show disrespect.  I remember a few years back when a Maori flashed one at the Queen in protest.  His defence in court was that it was a traditional Maori form of protest and he could therefore not be charged with indecent exposure.

Hi all

I know that this is nothing to do with mooning. But during the war with the French Crecy Agincourt etc. The traditional British two finger salute came in to use.

The French when capturing one of the feared archers would cut the index and middle from the right hand of the Archer prisoner, to prevent them ever drawing a bow again. Consequently the Archers would flash their right handed two fingure salute to the French to show they were able to draw a bow. From then it as become a signal of disrespect

Speaking of in the trees...more than mooning was going on!!!!!!!!!

Capuchin monkeys usually say hello by showing one another their erections.

I know this is a old discussion, so I dont know if anybody is still following it -- but theres a theory that mooning originnates with a chimp thing where a chimp shows his ass to a alpha to show subjection, but for humans the meaning changes to the opposite. Its on www.kiss-my-butt.com

On a recent 3 day rafting trip on the Colorado river there was two German nationals on board my raft.   A father & son from Frankfurt.   The Union Pacific RR has tracks next to the river for many miles & the raft guides following the tradition of "mooning" the Amtrack trains when they passed by.   Of course they encouraged all of us pilgrims to do the same which we did.   All except the Germans who had never heard of such behavior & eagerly took pix to show the folks back home.   They said it must be an American tradition.    Once again American "culture" is exported to the rest of the world.

In case you missed the Annual Amtrak Mooning in Southern California, here is the site with information for next year.

It is a recognized annual outing and fun day, here in La-La Land.
