200 years ago today on 7 May 1805 William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne and 2nd Earl of Shelburne, died. As Earl of Shelburne he was Secretary of State for the Southern Dept (foreign affairs) in the government of the Marquess of Rockingham in 1782 responsible for negiotating a peace settlement with the newly created USA. In July of that year Rockingham died and Shelburne became Prime Minister. He drew up a preliminary peace treaty, but it was rejected by Parliament as too humiliating for Britain to accept and Shelburne was defeated in a vote of censure in February 1783. He stayed on as PM until April when a new coalition government was formed. Rewarded for his services with the title of Marquess of Lansdowne in 1784 he never again held government office. |

Dear Mark:
Aaaaaarrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
How do the Welsh pronounce W, J,
and all the other consonants they're so fond of slinging around? Is there
any such thing as a vowel in the Welsh language? To me it's as
confusing as trying to read Polish or Finnish.
Thoroughly baffled,
Rabbi. |
