Jenn and Annie, you all may have heard of it but I never have... CERT training (Community Emergency Response Team).
My city is giving a free 6 week (2 nights a week, 3 hours a night) course that is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations teaching us how to manage utilities and put out small fires; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; counsel those in distress; triage; and organize ourselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.
We also get continued education credits through the local community college and receive certification, supplies, etc.
How cute!
AND, I get to put out a fire. Yay. I am excited about learning how to use a fire extinguisher. Sounds doofy, but I always wanted to do that and there's a lot of hands - on training that happens.
"The CERT concept was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985 and furthers the process of citizens understanding their responsibility in preparing for disaster. It also increases their ability to safely help themselves, their family and their neighbors."
It was made national in 1993 so if you are interested you can contact your local fire department to find out if such training is offered in your area.
Ooooh, and we might be able to do "ride alongs" with EMTs and fire trucks in the county to see how they respond in an emergency.
There is no mandatory response from you, but you will have the training to assist and also have the opportunity to go to other locations that may have been hit with a disaster (whether natural, technological, man-made, etc).
I have been so down and out, I have the time right now, so I think this is going to be an amazingly useful and gratifying use of 6 hours of my week!
Oh, and Sharon is coming with me! She just got back from Maryland like last week and I am already dragging her on adventures. :-) |

I have heard of it...But i think it's great to have more people trained to help EMT's,fire fighters, police in emergencies........ And if you don't use it to help anyone it could help your family.......... Ride alongs are good but they are real eye openers to see just how hard EMT's work to save someone or how dangerous it could be...just remember it's hard if you go on a call with children, that was the hardest thing.I still remember going to a few, makes me very grateful my children are healthy. But good luck and Congrats jenn |

I think they do the ride a longs because to see things in photographs is completely different from seeing the real thing.
We don't have to do them, but it is open.
I haven't made that decision, yet. I want to see what kind of training I am really getting, first. But I do want to toughen myself up a little. I am such a wuss, I think I need to kind of put myself out there and toughen this paper-thin skin.
