where do you turn?
when life seems without hope,
when you can no longer find
even the smallest bit of light for your path,
where do you turn
to find solace or peace?
when the professionals tell you
there are treatments but no cures,
so they give you more meds
and you feel you are
losing more than you’re gaining,
where do you turn
to find wholeness and healing?
when friends and family turn away,
when they cannot bear to look at your pain,
or hear it in your voice one more time,
when you see that your life, your struggles, you illness
embody what they fear
could happen to them or their children,
when they wish you’d just get over it
and you wish you could, too,
where do you turn
to find companionship along your journey?
when words like,
“How are you??BR>are said so often and so insincerely
that your automatically give
your abridged and censored answer,
where do you turn
to try to tell your story?
when well-meaning people tell you to
“Just give it all to God?BR>and you wonder if God even exists
beyond the human construct of religion,
social rules to keep us all in line,
when God seems so far away,
where do you turn
to even dare to pray?
when no place feels like home,
when nothing seems to fit,
when you feel you’re mostly on the outside looking in,
where do you turn
to find a place where you belong?
