02.04.2003 | | | Tip: Herb of the Week: Saint-John's-Wort | | | Saint-John's-wort, or Hypericum perforatum, is a very popular treatment in Europe for mild to moderate depression. Studies have shown that it's as effective as standard antidepressants, and it may also help with nervousness and seasonal affective disorder (or winter blues). If you decide to take Saint-John's-wort, I recommend a dose of 300mg (containing 0.3 percent standardized extract of hypericin), three times a day. Don't take more than 900mg per day. It does take some time to feel the effects -- give it as long as six weeks. If you notice any problems, such as stomach upset, restlessness, or fatigue, cut back on the dose. If you still feel discomfort with the herb, discontinue use. Until we know more about how it works, I don't recommend combining Saint-John's-wort with any other antidepressants. Those taking digoxin, theophylline, immunosuppressives, antiretrovirals, or anticoagulants should not take Saint-John’s-wort.
