just fond this posted in one of my groups on the subject

Van: MSN-bijnaamSkyangel?/FONT>

Verzonden: 18-10-2008 6:09
This was on another group I belong to . . .

There is an email circulating around msn groups, claiming to be from an MSN administrator. The email says msn is closing groups and that people should begin to move their groups over to a competitor. The link to that competitive website is given in this email AND they also claim they are affiliated with microsoft.

I wrote to MSN and they are saying this is a hoax.
DO NOT move your groups over to this other service.
MSN groups are not going anywhere and they have no intentions of closing them.

I deleted the other topic because the title was misleading, and because it contained the link to this other provider. Which I know nothing about and do not know if it is safe for our members to click on.

Stay calm, everyone.
MSN groups are here to stay.
MSN charges advertisers their premium rates to advertise on their groups. They arent foolish enough to close them AND pass on free business to another company.

This is an email FROM a real MSN support contact person.

My name is Dolores and I am a Subject Matter Expert within MSN Groups department. Your e-mail was escalated to me and I would like to assist you with your concern about the information you saw that MSN Groups is closing down and that it will be changed to Windows Live Groups.

I realize how important MSN Groups is to you. I appreciate that you have written to us regarding this.

J, the posting you saw is a hoax. MSN Groups is not closing down and Microsoft has no plans of decommissioning MSN Groups at this time.

Microsoft has no control over email messages, Web sites, or postings that imitate company trademarks, logos, or copyrighted materials. The sources of these hoaxes only attempt to spread malicious rumors about Microsoft and may sometimes even encourage people to divulge personal information willingly. This information is frequently used maliciously or fraudulently.

To avoid the spread of these types of information, we advise you to delete any email you receive, or disregard postings on MSN Groups regarding this rumor.

Any important announcement from Microsoft about MSN Groups will be posted at the MSN Groups homepage (http://groups.msn.com).

On the other hand, it is true that Windows Live Groups is coming in the future, but it is a separate product. As of this time, we do not have any information yet about the features of Windows Live Groups.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using MSN Groups.

Sincerely,

Dolores

Some handy info for you

Yes it appears to be true. Msn Groups are closing and partnering with Multiply.com to enable a transition to Multiply's social networking service from Msn. I have a group here on Msn, and am a member of many groups here, as well as I have been a member of Multiply for years, where I admin the support groups there. I am not on Staff at Multiply. I do assist with support there however so I'm familiar with both services. At this time, migration and exporting of your content (the details) are not finalized yet, but will be forthcoming. But here is some information that might assist you right now.

User ID's at Multiply can only be used once. If you open a Multiply account and then cancel it, you will have to use a different User ID the next time. (This is the what you sign up with, and you choose it as long as it is available and not in use) This cannot be changed so choose carefully. It will appear in the url of your personal site as well.

Group urls work the same way. If you create a group, choose carefully, as you cannot change it. You CAN change your group name however.

At Multiply you get your own site as well as the ability to create and join existing groups. And Multiply is FREE with the ability to post UNLIMITED content to include photos (something that you have limits here with) Photos at Multiply not only have thumbnail views, but ZOOM up to 1200 x 1200. So any use of photos for hotlinking at Multiply using Multiply stored photos (either privately or publicly) works great.

Once you register at Multiply.com, make SURE you go to your valid email, locate the Welcome email you will receive back after registering and click on the confirm link or you will not be able to access all of the features. One feature in settings is setting your USER NAME. This CAN be changed at any time. (Real first name, nicname, etc. I do not recommend using your last name. It's a required field. Put in a space instead although ONLY your contacts can see your last name or members of a private group.

You must know another users exact User Name, User ID or email address EXACTLY to invite them to be a contact or invite them to a group. Make sure you have all of this information before your group closes if possible.

There will be announcements at Multiply regarding where MsN users can meet up. Most likely a group will be set up for just this purpose, since email addresses aren't always shared in a group here, (it's not recommended)

Your new Inbox at Multiply has Staff Blog announcements in the right rail, so watch for them there. The inbox is not email! It's your feed of all content from your groups or contacts. So you never have to clean it out or remove anything.

You may choose from a multitude of contact relationships, from friends, family designations, to online buddy. You can set permissions for each post you do, so that only those you give permission can see your contact OR.. you can post publicly. Home pages and Groups work very similar but there are differences. I have more information to add to this thread and will try to answer any questions also. I will post links to support groups also in this thread.

Be sure that after you confirm your email, go into your settings and get that taken care of first. Click on everything. Set everything up there first. Be SURE to enable advanced posting options while there so you don't miss any of the extra features.

Multiply and the users there will work very hard to assist all users with migrating over, for those that wish to do so to include supporting the exporting of your group content from MsN to Multiply. Details on that will be forthcoming as it's made available.

Here is my homepage at Multiply with public content that you can view for those interested in taking a peek. Feel free to click on everything there. My private content is protected and it's one of the great features at Multiply. You can designate post by post who sees what. You can look in all of the following groups as well without registering. When you register if you choose to do so, you can then join these groups by clicking on JOIN under the group logo (on your homepage it's called the headshot)

*Edited*

Here is the User support group for feature questions and issues:

Here is the Newbie group for new members.

Here is the Design group for learning how to design your own site and group:

Here is the Theme group where you can get customized themes, thousands and thousands of them (all FREE) and for asisstance with using them, the Design group will be glad to assist you. (This group is for theme pick up only and does not offer support so be sure and see the Design group for that including the getting started links on the homepage).

Here is the Developers group. This is Multiply's own Developers' group where members can make suggestions for future features.

And finally here is the Staff blog, Multiply's OWN homepage where announcements are made and you are alerted to on your new inbox.

Oh and another important note: In Settings (this is important) .. SET your email alerts when you first join as well as after you join any group so that you don't inadvertently flood your own inbox with posts from very active groups. You have MANY settings to choose from there.

Next, you can click on customize under your headshot, change your headshot, choose a base theme, edit your content etc. Once you post content, you will see your navigation bar reflect that you now have photos, videos, etc (as mine shows)

Its' difficult to tell you everything but I suggest glancing through the tutorials in the blog sections of the groups which is usually where you will find those (notes are usually reserved for questions in the support groups)

I'll monitor this post, and will try to answer your questions.

Linda

MORE:

Also please note, that it is NOT necessary that you create your new group at Multiply right away. You can join, and concentrate on becoming familiar with your own personal site first, inviting your friends, designing it, etc. Joining the support groups, and spending some time browsing the tutorials in those.

So there is NO rush on your group creation yet. As soon as there is more information on exporting your content to Multiply (or importing it to Multiply) you will see announcements on your inbox about this.

A couple of the features you are really going to enjoy at Multiply. One is called Live replies. EVERY post once posted, or any comment on that post becomes an open "live" chatroom so to speak. Once you post, just leaving it the thread (browser window open to that thread) will result in the comments (replies) updating live as they are posted - no refreshing the page!

Another great feature is the viewing history. For every post you make on your own site and every post you make (as the author) on any group - you will see exactly WHO views it on Multiply! You will see their headshot, user name and user ID and can check them out on their site just by clicking on it (Your viewing history is at the bottom of each page and on your homepage - only you can see YOUR viewing history)

Headshots/User Id's have what is called a miniprofile (sometimes referred to as the minipop or minipoptart by some), which, when single clicked on in a thread or viewing history, pops up showing you more about that user before you go to their site as well as options. You will also notice on your homepage "page hits" as some call them. It's the statistics of who has visted your site, which pages, etc. (the actual numbers of logged in users).

I'll continue to add information to this thread, and feel free to post questions or link to it from another group.

AND MORE:
- At Multiply you can edit your posts or comments (replies) if you do what I just did. You may also remove any post or comment you make in any group. You have total control of what you post there.

Jackie

Skyangel deleted her message that it was a hoax, it's true after all.
I've also written to msn netherlands but didn't hear back yet.
But I found the news also posted at CF Netherlands, although there were also people saying that it wasnt true.
It seems there are some people writing back or answering the phone on behalf of msn that don't know the news themselves yet. Lol!

Well, meanwhile I have received an answer from MSN
and they confirmed the news about the change of msn groups into multiply, which will start next week, and the closure of msn groups in february next year.

Meanwhile I still come across messages also stating that they received a message from msn that this is a hoax.

So I don't know if there are two different msn groups, maybe it depends which country you are in what answers you will get.

Just read this post

I found this article in response to the closing of MSN Groups: I GOT THIS FROM MY CATHOLIC GROUP I BELONG TO . TEDDY

What's the status of MSN Groups? Are indications of its demise "a hoax"?

Hmm I seem to have created a bit of a stir over at MSN Groups. When I posted this week on the Spaces worldwide numbers, I mentioned Windows Live Groups, and it was picked up at Managers Helping Managers, an MSN Group for Group managers. They're concerned (can't blame them, really) about my reference to "all indications are that it will soon begin a migration of MSN Groups into a new Windows Live Groups":

This situation is a repeat of the "secret" Adult Groups closure/moving which was also accidentally found out about on the internal MSN/Live website and which MSN denied right upto the last minute of the Adults Groups closure/moving.

(Historical note: MSN Groups transferred all "adult" groups to the independent 3rd party World Groups in 2005, and then shut down all adult groups on November 28, 2005).

So the hardworking folks at MHM contacted MSN Groups Technical Support, and after being escalated they received this reply:

My name is Dolores and I am a Subject Matter within MSN Groups department. Your e-mail was escalated to me and I would like to assist you with your concern about the information you saw that MSN Groups is closing down and that it will be changed to Windows Live Groups.

And this is what I received this morning

Beste Mar,

Bedankt dat je contact opneemt met MSN Groups Support. (thank you for writing .... )

Mijn naam is Pascal en ik begrijp dat je gehoord hebt dat MSN Groepen gesloten gaan worden. Ik begrijp hoe vervelend dit voor je is en ik bied je mijn verontschuldigingen aan voor enige ongemakken. (repeating the question and apologizing for any inconvenience)

Veel gebruikers vragen waarom (= why) we MSN Groepen sluiten.

(thank you for using msn groups .... etc.etc.)

Met vriendelijke groeten,

Pascal

Thank you so much for all the info Mar, I can always count on you to find things out.. I feel better now.. I will mis MSN even if i haven't been on much lately.. I hope that it will be an easy thing to Migrate to Multiply.. or other that Q chooses to migrate to.. Have you come across the reason why Msn is shutting down? Is it because people don't pay.. or space for postings and pictures.. wish I knew.. I pay for msn every year.. so if groups will not be in MSN anymore i will not pay for it anylonger.

thanks again Mar..

hi Bay,

well it says in the msn mail

Many users are asking why we are closing MSN Groups.

We want to provide our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today

and we made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of our overall investment

in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live.

In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative,

best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about.

It's very important to us that you still have access to your Group and its data

and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your Group going

into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

In other words, they cannot offer the best in the groups as they are now .... i guess it's costing too much to keep

and we all know what a problems arise when they are updating or changing servers.

Sure hope nobody is paying for extra storage anymore. When I checked last friday just after i first heard the news i could still press the button for more storage, and it would cost me 20 euro for a year.

I think Microsoft will keep Windows Live and the mail services they offer, they just want to get rid of the groups as they are now.

But I agree with the complaints that most alternatives, including multiply, are more of the blog type, that is also used in spaces and myspace.

But who knows what they will offer for the msn groups, we will wait and see. I sure hope it will only get better.

in my dutch frame of msn groups there is now a message with link, it's in the left corner just above the name of the group

from what i read there, there will be a new service for small groups this autumn

but you can already move your group to multiply

i am thinking about moving one of my smaller groups and see what happens.....

are there some pages you are concerned about to see how it will be transferred?

maybe i can add them to this test group ....

yep, maybe it will be a problem to move this group
since we don't know our login anymore for the managers accounts

will need to contact msn about it, but i will wait till the dust has settled a bit .... we still have till february, and maybe we can move the content we want to keep somewhere else

by the way, did your read all the info that is behind that link up?

i understand that msn wants to start a new service for small groups ... i guess they are not moving content to that service, but i think they want to get rid of the big groups that take a lot of bandwidth, they can go to multiply .... or somewhere else, lol

i wonder if it will be possible to do the bump up games that lots of msn groups are playing, with copy and paste and lots of graphics and stuff

from what skyangel discovered and tells i understand that there is a problem with moving multiple photo albums ..... think about it, some people payed to get more storage, and will not be happy to lose it all now...

i've been on the puter way too long this week, from when i get up, till late at night, not good
well, tomorrow i will visit my nephew, he has his birthday coming up next week, so won't be on that much then either

see you
