Mexico death cult on PR drive

Monday Aug 13 09:18 AEST
Followers of Mexico's Santa Muerte death cult have replaced their scythe clutching skeleton idol. (AAP)

Followers of Mexico's Santa Muerte death cult have replaced their scythe-clutching skeleton idol with a pale angel in a gold dress in an attempt to make their beliefs more palatable to Christianity.

Leader David Romo, who considers himself a Catholic priest, led devotees in a packed service to consecrate the new statue in the cult's headquarters, a converted house in the gritty Mexico City neighborhood of Tepito.

Santa Muerte is a centuries-old pagan cult that sprung back up in recent years to claim some 2 million faithful in Mexico, the second-biggest Catholic country. Its followers range from elite politicians to kidnappers and gangsters.

Believers have been angered by the Roman Catholic Church's disapproval of their ghoulish cult and government attempts to close their main Mexico City shrine.

Romo said the bible supported his belief that Santa Muerte, or Saint Death, was an Christian angel.

"It is possible to ask, to raise prayer to the angel of Santa Muerte," he told reporters as the serene-looking new statue was unveiled.

Mexico City's toughest neighborhoods are dotted with the cult's shrines, containing the grim-reaper-like image of a bejeweled and scythe-wielding skeleton.

In May, killers believed to be working for a cocaine smuggling cartel dumped the corpses of three men from a rival gang in a Santa Muerte shrine close the U.S. border.

But at Sunday's ceremony believers in the powers of the new incarnation of their saint, dubbed the 'White Lady,' sang Christian hymns and families took their children to be baptized in front of the statue.

Followers do not see a contradiction between their worship of death and being Catholics. In Mexico, it is not uncommon for Catholic churches in indigenous villages to practice unorthodox rituals and worship their own saints.

"There is no difference, this is the Church," said Francisco Zarmenta, as he waited in line to baptize his white-clad son, aged three.

I have killed people in combat. Does that make me an Angel of Death? I do not worship death but I have a healthy respect for it. I go out of my way to be tolerant of everyones beliefs but I do not give false lip serve to their beliefs. There are a lot of religious practices that I find very distrbing but I try and keep my true feelings to myself. Fanatism of any type gives me the willies. {willies is an American word for feelings of uneasiness I'm fairly sure that the Brits have another meaning for this word} *grins* Wolfy

angel of death goes by many names Azreal Abaddon and others have you ever noticed when dealing with spirits the circles of protection are rather simple when calling angels the circles are very elaborate and difficult the reason for this is Angels are the strong arms for what christians call god and they show up to clean house usually and they are very powerful but that is if you believe in angels and demons
quote from the movie constantine.
"i dont believe in the devil."
constantine "you should he believes in you."
word to those who want to be warm and fuzzie,
just cause you dont believe it dont mean it aint real
you can say me hitting you with a large stick won't hurt but does that make it any less painful ...think about it.

Papa Eclipse

Dear Folks,

Ok - firstly .........

Luna - you're weird .......... luvable, charming - but weird, just like me, are we related? hehehehe *huggles*

Wolfy - never thought of you as being an angel .......... *thinks* ............... more like a cherub, and I'm sure da missus would agree hehehehe.  Oh and I have a phrase too - and to answer your question, yes "the Willies" is used in the UK too as well as Down Under. I use it as a term of unsettling me in an annoying way, not as freaking me out kinda-way.
Like a scale system ...... "bugging me" is mild ..... "giving me the willies" is moderate ..... and "pissing me off "is full on ........ LOL.
But my fav phrase for something unsettling me spooky-wise, I say is giving me the "eeby-jeebies"

Shaman - a word from us Warm 'N Fuzzies ......... you're weird too, but the difference between you and Luna is that I'm used to it from you ROTFL

ps: the quotation from the movie Constantine, seriously, I found was very thought provoking.

Lotsa luv, light and other mushy stuffs,

Shanny

I am sure glad that I am not the only "nut case" here. Sane people give me diarrhea.I always thought is was the "heby-jeebies"? I like the term "makes my skin crawl" I hope that when they have "us" committed we get adjoining padded cells.  Wolfy

Hi folks --

I know this is kind of an oldish thread, but I just had to share, because I've been following the Santa Muerte cult for a while.

First, I just love any personification of death, and I really like Sana Muerte because she's often viewed as female, so she reminds me of Maman Bridgette.  (I come by my love of death and cemeteries naturally -- my parents help run one in Kentucky.)

Anywho, occasionally, Santa Muerte is depicted in the robes of the Virgin of Guadalupe!  I think she looks awesome in those duds, so attached is a drawing I did of her in those robes and posed just like the Virgin of Guadalupe.  Enjoy!  (Forgive the poor quality -- I don't have a scanner, so I just took a photo of the drawing...bleh.)
