Comfort Charm for Children

One day, my children and I were at Burger King for lunch.  My daughter had finished her hamburger and was playing in the ball pit and on the slide.  Somehow, the net in the play area caught her on the neck.  She was o.k., but it had hurt and she was crying uncontrollably.  She came to me to give her something to make her feel better.  I really didn't have anything.  Being put on the spot, all I could come up with was a cough drop.  I told her that sucking on the cough drop would make her throat feel better, so she did I what I told her to do.  Within a minute or so, her crying stopped and she felt better.  The cough drop worked because I told it would.  That was when I realized, that parents have the magick to help their children get through anything.

Every new hurdle a Child faces in life is filled with moments of insecurity and fear.  Of course, it is impossible for parents to be there all the time.  Many parents nowadays must work to support their familes and, once children enter school age, they are away from us for long periods of time each day anyway.

Here is a special charm that will help comfort them with love when we cannot be with them.

Many of us have an old chain and locket in our jewelry box at home.  If not, you can buy one as a special surprise for your child when you know she will be facing something difficult, like the first day of school.   Better yet, you can make one with a bead kit or simply out of string and uncooked, painted pasta (that you paint yourself).  Place a photo of you and your child in the locket.  If the locket is too small, just a picture of yourself will do.  Fill the locket with kisses in front of your child.  Write a short blessing/prayer about your love for her or you can use the one below.

Within this locket, that we made
my love for you is found,
All you have to do is look inside
and I will always be around.

Let her know that the locket represents your love that is always with her.  Whenever she feels insecure or frightened, she can open it for a kiss and comfort from you.  The locket can be refilled with kisses by you on a regular basis.

Childhood is a magical time.  It is up to us, as parents, to nurture that magic, so that it can remain with them for a lifetime.
