The ride through Badman Gulch was blessedly uneventful. Whiplash, Cole, the passengers, and even the horses maintained a tense quiet until they passed through the deep ravines that were made-to-order for an ambush.

A light snow set in in the late afternoon. Brautigan pulled the coach into a low spot between two sheltering hills, stopped the coach and set the brake. Whiplash and Cole gathered some firewood and soon had a nice warm fire going. Then they put up a large canvas tent with help from the male passengers. Once camp was set up, everyone wrapped up in heavy blankets and gathered around the fire to warm up and to prepare a dinner of beef stew. The men drank straight whiskey and Penny fixed herself coffee and added whiskey to it.

Wolves were howling to the North. Occaisionally the bugling of a bull elk is heard. Otherwise, the wind howls low over the sounds of the fire and quiet conversations.

After dinner, Whiplash and Brautigan went off to feed and water the horses at a creek about 150 feet away from the campsite.

“We're far enough away from Badman Gulch to be safe and we're just fine for necessities. We will hafta be on our toes though, Cole.?said Whiplash as they were walking the horses to the creek.

“Yeah, we'll keep our heads on a swivel and everything'll turn out fine?replied Brautigan, even though he had a powerful feeling that things were gonna turn dangerous again very soon.....

“I'll take the first watch back at camp. You get yourself some sleep?said Whiplash.

Jones and Brautigan returned to camp and hitched the horses up to the coach for the night in case they had to make a quick escape.

The male passengers had turned in in the tent and Miss Penny slept bundled up in the coach. Cole wrapped up in blankets by the glowing embers of the fire for a nap and Whiplash took up a lookout position with his rifle near the top of the taller hill.

Apart from Percy Phlegm, the banker, and Miss Penny Fancy, daughter of Clarence and Emma Fancy of Fancy’s Emporium, there were two other people on the coach. The grey-haired Doctor Herbert Haslip, medical practisioner, surgeon, dentist and coroner was on his way to visit relatives in Montana, and the mustached and dapper Slick Bonanza, card sharp and gambler, was on his way to a new fleecing ground after being sent packing by the sheriff of the town of Boulder Ridge.

Percy was on his way to attend a bank security conference in Montana, and Miss Penny, a mature eighteen, was on her way to attend The Julienne Finishing School for Young Ladies. Doctor Haslip had told the Fancys that he would chaperone their daughter on the trip.

Miss Penny had had several cups of coffee laced with whisky and now was wide awake from the caffein, a little tipsy from the whiskey, and was shivering from the cold night air blowing through the open-windowed coach. On top of that she had to pee after all that coffee.

She left the coach wrapped in her heavy blanket and found a nearby bush in the moonlight. As she relieved herself in the snow, a cold wind blew snowflakes up her skirt. Her teeth chattered. She arranged her clothing, and was on her way back to the coach when she decided to warm herself by the embers of the fire first.

Her chattering teeth were enough to rouse Cole from his light sleep. "Evening, ma’am, you sure do look chilled tonight", he remarked sleepily. "Mebe you oughta bunk down next o the fire with me", he offered.

"I’ll have you know, Cole Brautigan, that I am a lady and do not do such improper things." She replied.

"Well, freeze then, Miss Fancy", said Brautigan, and rolled over in his blanket to warm his backside at the fire.

The booze and the cold finally got the better of her. She had been dwelling all day on the image of Cole’s reaction to her femininity, and now she snuggled up spoon style in her blanket between Cole and the fire. She was warm at last, front and back. She wanted to see Cole's reaction to their proximity in the morning.

During the night Whiplash came to get Cole to do his watch, and took Cole’s place in the blankets. In the morning Miss Fancy was mortified at being found curled up with Whiplash Jones by Cole.

Miss Penny was pissed off and hungover to beat the band that morning as everybody had breakfast and then pitched in to break camp. Soon Miss Fancy was pouting inside the coach with the other passengers and Cole got the wheels turning again.

Whiplash and Cole were grinning their asses off for quite a while up on the driver's bench at the stunt they'd pulled on Penny. Soon though they switched to a more serious mood as they contemplated their next challenge on the trail; The Devil's Crown.

The Devil's Crown is a high-altitude cluster of loose, uneven ground and towering rock formations. You had a choice of tryin' to force your way over the mountains(which would be hell with a stagecoach) or go through the crown. The choice was obvious and Whiplash and Cole knew it. That didn't mean they had to like it.

Little did they know that the Durangos had ridden hard through the night and would soon be at the crown ahead of 'em, ready to inflict their bloody revenge......

Whiplash had Cole stop the coach after he noticed buzzards circling above the rock towers of the Devil's Crown, about two miles away.

Jones and Brautigan watched the birds float lazily on thermal updrafts.

"Those birds are eyin' a meal that ain't dead yet or they're waiting on somebody to make 'em that meal" said Whiplash.

"You're right, Whiplash" replied Brautigan, "I say we scout around up there before we just drive right in ta make sure we don't turn into buzzard chow."

Cole steered a right turn and parked the coach in a ravine. Cole handed the 10 guage and two boxes of shells off to the male passengers, grabbed a coupla canteens of water, and then left out with Whiplash to run some reconnaissance up the Eastern flank of the Devil's Crown.

The passengers were not aware that a strongbox with the El Hoyo mine payroll was under the rear seat of the passenger compartment. Slick Bonanza would have been very interested in that information. Apart from the shotgun all the men carried their own personal weapons, and miss Penny had a Derringer in her cloth, drawstring purse. She had put Percy’s change in that purse last night since the coins had been chilling her bosom. She transferred the small gun to her right stocking top, to the delight of all the men. Slick, being the most able-bodied male there, had possession of the shotgun. The others would look for signs of outside intervention.

Jose and Pedro Durango had dug a four foot deep by ten foot long trench in the middle of the road and and had filled it up with snow. Their plan was that the stagecoach and team would founder in the camouflaged hole and would be accessible to sniper fire from the crest of the Crown. Once at their mercy, Whiplash and the other men would be stripped and staked naked in the snow to perish, while the brothers enjoyed the begrudged favours of the female passenger. They would then dispose of her, hijack the stage and drive it back to the hideout where they would open the mine strongbox that their contact in Sagebrush had tipped them off about.

Unbeknown to them, Cole and Whiplash had crept up the eastern flank of the Crown and could see the brothers hiding behind some pillars. Not sure of who they were, they did not feel obliged to shoot them immediately. Cole coverd them with his Winchester while Whiplash ordered, "Raise them hands, pardners, and show us some identimafercashun."

Pedro dove for his rifle and Cole drilled him throught the right ear hole. Brains and earwax went ‘plop?as they hit the cold, cold ground. Jose thought better of it and raised his hands high.

Brautigan carefully slid his way down a rock face to take Jose prisoner. Just as Cole tried to lay hands on him, the bandit went for a knife concealed in his boot.

Cole performed a quick draw with his revolver and drilled the scoundrel twice in the gut and once just below his left eye socket.

Jose Durango staggered around a few steps and then stepped over the edge. He fell 30 feet and landed face first on some very sharp rocks.

Whiplash and Cole checked out the area that the Durangos had been starin' at down below and discovered the trench they'd dug.

After a short discussion on how to manage driving around the trap, the two borrowed the Bros. Durangos' horses and rode back to the stagecoach.

When they got back to the hidden stage they got the men to gather rocks and build a barricade on both ends of the trench. That should alert anyone using the road to the dangers of the camouflaged hole.

Whiplash suggested everyone have a bathroom break and a mid-morning coffee break. Over coffee and hardtack, Cole and Whiplash told the passengers of the events at the Devil’s Crown.

Miss Penny got extremely infatuated with Cole at that instant, knowing that he has shot and killed the two bandits. Miss penny, it seems, had a psychological quirk that had lain dormant until now. She took Cole aside and whispered, "Cole, Brautigan, you are soooo brave, and handsome too. Big, strong you would kill anyone who tried to hurt little old me, wouldn’t you, hmmmm?"

"Mah job is to protect the passengers, ma’am, and that includes your own self", responded Brautigan trying to be professional as Miss Penny latched onto his arm as if laying claim to him as her personal bodyguard.

Miss Penny turned to face Cole with her back to the others. She quickly pulled at her bodice and exposed some Fancy female flesh for Cole’s viewing pleasure. He blushed and Penny observed the same reaction taking place with Cole’s anatomy as previously. "Now, ma’am, you aughtn’t be doing that there kind of thing to menfolk. You might regret it if some man lost his self control and layed his hands on your person."

"If you like Cole, honey, you can lay your manly hands, or anything else, on me anywhere and any time your little ole heart desires", simpered Miss Penny presenting her charms to Cole with both hands.

"Excuse me ma’am, I gotta go somewheres", spluttered Brautigan and took off at a lope to a distant large boulder which he hid begind. He emerged five minutes later in a less tense state of mind just as Whiplash called everyone to get in the coach so they could resume their journey.

Miss Penny had the goods restored to their confinement by then, and everyone packed up, put out the fire and climbed aboard.

Dozens of buzzards were congregating at Devil’s Crown as if attending a carrion consumer convention. Brautigan released the brakes, geed the team and skirted the hole in the road. "Thirty miles to the next pit stop", declared Jones.

The average speed of a coach was four miles per hour on the bumpy road, and the fare was five cents a mile. It took an uneventful seven and a half hours to reach the next stop, Badgerton, a small town with a saloon and more importantly public baths.

Passengers and crew would spend the night at Badgerton Arms Hotel. Slick Bonanza found The Silver Dollar Saloon much to his liking, and decided to stay over in Badgerton till his welcome wore out, which would be in about two weeks.

Jones and Brautigan took the team to the coach depot where the horses were fed and rubbed down. They would pick up a replacement team in the morning and allow the used horses their day of rest.

After booking their rooms and cleaning up, Brautigan went with Whiplash to the saloon to wet their whistles. Slick was already there playing poker.

Sitting at the bar together, Cole finally told Whiplash about the Penny Fancy shenanigans. Whiplash was impressed. "Waal, son, it looks like you’re a real female magnet alright. But mark my words, be very careful. Them fillys’ll use every dirty trick in the book and hogtie a man in no time if’n he ain’t too smart about it. If’n you want a good time with no ties, check out Dolly over there trying to find a john. She’s choosey about who she goes with so there’s less chance of your pecker droppin?off a week later if you go with her."

"I guess yer right, Whiplash, but I ain’t takin no chances of ketchin' the clap from no saloon gal", replied Cole. They finished their drinks and decided to hit the hay. On the way out they saw Slick still playing, but now he had a big stack of the other players?money in front of him.

Brautigan dreamed all night of chasing an elusive, nubile and unclad Penny Fancy around in a large room full of beds. Finally she let him catch her, but before any futher activity could transpire she put a heavy leg iron on him. Cole awoke in a heavy sweat hollering for Whiplash to save him ....

Whiplash was woken out of a dead sleep by a knock at his hotel room door. He got up and answered the door with his six-shooter in hand. It was a deputy sheriff.

"Mr. Jones are you in charge of a stage coach transportin' a Mr. Slick Bonanza to Helena, Montana?" asked the deputy. "Yeah, that's me I reckon" replied Whiplash.

"Mr. Bonanza was shot and gravely injured tonight at the saloon. It seems he was cheatin' some local boys at the card table" said the deputy with feigned sympathy, "He's askin' for you down at the doctor's office."

"Alright, let me get dressed real quick and we'll go on down there" replied Whiplash.

As Whiplash shut and locked his hotel room door, Cole's door opened and out walked Miss Penny. Cole appeared behind Penny, spun her around and gave her a big ol' goodnight kiss. Penny turned around and saw Whiplash standin' down the hall aways with the deputy.

Penny looked Whiplash in the eye, smiled and then blew him a raspberry before walking away and down the stairs.

Cole noticed Whiplash, smiled and said, "I guess a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, Whiplash." Jones grinned widely and said, "Well you horny old devil, you got lucky tonight but our friend Slick ain't so lucky. He's shot and dyin' down at the doc's office."

"You wanna join us down there to hear Slick's final words?" asked Jones.

"Yeah, let's go" replied Brautigan, "I'll be ready in a sec."

After giving directions to the doctor’s office, the deputy hurried back to the sheriff’s office to browse through some confiscated porn books.

Doctor Willie Hackemoff had done his best to make Slick comfortable and had given him a hefty dose of laudanum for the pain. Laudanum is a narcotic consisting of an alcohol solution of opium, so Slick was a bit dopey when Whiplash and Cole got there.

"Hey youse guys, I got no family and Im gonna croak soon, ha ha ha-haaa, ain’t that a corker!",Slick blurbled. "Ya look like ya could find the loot if anyone can, Jonesy, ha ha ha-haaa. Ya look jes?like a prospector with a whip, y’old fart ha ha ha-haaa. I want ya to have this map I won in a card game and give half the treasure to Card Sharps Anonymous in my name. Keep the other ha ha ha-haaalf fer yaself. OOOhhhh, what’s that bright red light, ain’t it purty, its so warm lookin? so ......"

Whiplash took the map from the dead man’s hand, and mentally rebated himself four dollars unused fare on behalf of Slick.

They left the corpse in the care of Doc Hackemoff, and hurried back to Whiplash’s room to study the map.

On the map the MacSlaine mine was located Northeast of Helena and about 20 miles away from the El Hoyo mine. Whiplash and Cole decided that after they arrived in Helena and dropped off the stagecoach they would go check it out.

The two decided to be partners in the mine if it yielded any silver.....

After a few additional hours of sleep, Jones and Brautigan rounded up their passengers, loaded up, and headed out again. The next stop was Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Cole was very much looking forward to seeing the Rocky Mountains again....not to mention getting a little farther away from bandit country.

It had snowed all day since mid-morning.

The stage coach soon merged with a herd of buffalo and driving became slow. On all sides of the coach there were hundreds of adult buffs and their calves tromping along slowly in the snow. The temperature had been dropping by the hour and the wind was cuttin through like a new saw.

Snow, ice, and icicles covered the coach. The passengers were all bundled up to their eyeballs and huddled together for warmth. Whiplash and Cole fought back chattering teeth while catching the full-force of the snow-laden wind up on the driver's bench....

The good part was that Jackson was visible on the trail below.

Cole had welcomed the cold at first because it kept Miss Fancy from constantly buggin' him while he was driving. Now he, like everyone else on board, was desperate for a warm fire, hot food, and a long winter's night sleep.

"We'll be eatin hot chili con carne and drinkin' fresh coffee in about an hour, kid" said Whiplash, noticing that Cole had clearly had enough of freezin his ass off for one day.

Thankfully, the buffalo herd turned west about a mile from Jackson and freed up the coach. Cole snapped the reins and the horses broke into a near run that they maintained all the way in to town.

The coach pulled up in front of the Elk Country Inn and dropped off the passengers, who scuttled inside as quickly as they could.

After unloading the passengers' luggage and leaving it with them in the hotel lobby, Whiplash and Cole drove over to the local office of the stage coach company and secured the coach and horses with an armed guard.

The two then hustled down the boardwalk to Miss Starlene's Cafe and were soon tucking into steaming bowls of chili and washing it down with hot black coffee.
