I thought I'd start a thread with just plain ol' South Park news.  The most pressing matter is to tell everyone what South Park episodes will be on this week.

So please come to this humble thread to find out what is on, and whether you need to tune in at 9:30 or 10PM tonight!!

For the week of Aug. 22:

Tuesday 9:30pm ET/PT - Chinpokomon
Wednesday 9:30pm ET/PT - Red Hot Catholic Love;  Wednesday 10pm ET/PT: Goobacks
Thursday 9:30pm ET/PT - Towelie

BTW:  Did anyone catch which episode was on last night (Monday)?  I missed it...

It was a good ep that it did not preach but was a little silly thing.  yes, cartman as always pissed me off by him being an asshole.
Poor Butters came off a wussy in the beginning but then towards the end, kicked some major butt and Cartman's as well ending the ep with Butters dragging Cartman's (I hope) lifeless body to the bus then yelling, I got my partner on the bus and finally letting go of Cartman's hand and passes out...
It looked like Kenny was going to be killed but lucky for me and him, he was not..
alot of funny bits tonight, esp with the townfolk refusing to break character even if it meant their lives..
It was funny to see Kyle and Wendy back together as well as MAH BOY TIMMY back....
also the dumb gag was the high tech robbers robbed a Burger King and got away with a little cash and food.  one of the parts that I liked was the other bad guy asking for his cut.  he gets a couple of dollars and a bag of food.. which later after he is killed the boss grabs the couple of bucks and bag of food....
sheesh
Mr Garrison is again a man and a wuss at that. Kill the kids not me...
So a funny silly ep tonight...
I like these non preaching eps if they are good and silly funny, better than most of the preaching ones.
again, not the best but far from the worse.  maybe number 2 or 3.....
Hopefully the last half is much better than this first half....

Tonight's episode, as typical of this season thus far, set up some classic movie references and then didn't make full use of them.

The thieves were instantly recognizable from Die Hard, either Stan or Cartman could have siezed the Bruce Willis part, and using Home Alone style tactics wiped the floor with the incompetents! Stan' s dirt beard and way of playing into the 'pioneer mentality' was a good moment, but could've been expanded upon!

I give it 6 Kennys, in a season which so far rate's about 5.5 Kennys overall. A season of unfulfilled promise, which I hope comes back like Die Hard did.... With a Vengeance!!

Before we begin, I feel the need to address the trailer for The Love Guru, which ran at the top of tonight’s episode. I hope the movie is good, but wow, does it look like a recycled piece of nothingness. Seriously Mike, another goofy guy with a funny accent AND Verne Troyer? Let the little man have his strippers and fade off into the sunset.

Anyway, South Park, the last episode before the twelfth season’s hiatus. (They’ll be back with seven more, but I’m not sure when.) It was okay. Not great, not horrible. Funny, but not hilarious. There was a noticeable lack of proselytizing, which can be a good or a bad thing. Here’s something I noticed, though, as I looked over a few SP message boards after tonight’s conclusion: There’s always someone who’ll swear it was the best episode of the season, and someone who will swear it was the worst. Strange-ish.

Anyway, the kids—this was an all-kids installment, with no parents around—go on a field trip to one of those lame-ass Pioneer Village-type places, to be taught about the wonders of 1864. As usual, South Park is pretty spot-on with the ridiculousness of everyday things like this: The workers won’t break character, and the kids are bored as hell. In order to keep from wandering off, the kids are paired off, and of course no one wants to go with Cartman. (He’s an asshole, you see.) In one of the episode’s best moments, the camera pans to Butters, who looks coy and offers to partner up. Mr. Garrison puts the two together, and Butters swears not to let go of Cartman’s hand through the entire episode.

When fattie peeks through the fence surrounding the village, he spies Super Phun Thyme, a huge indoor gaming palace, and drags Butters away from the field trip and over to have a good time. Butters, naturally, gets mad and won’t let go of Cartman’s hand, so everyone thinks they’re special little friends. Second best moment of the episode: Cartman’s song about having a super fun time at Super Phun Thyme.

Of course, things can’t go smoothly for the rest of the kids, and the Village is taken over by terrorists who have just robbed a Burger King. It certainly felt like the SP guys were heading toward a straight Die Hard parody, but nothing came of that. The episode may have been a slight homage to Toy Soldiers, though. Third funniest moment of the episode: One of the terrorists demands his share of the loot, and when he’s given a cheeseburger, he flips through it like it’s a stack of money.

Cops surround the compound, and of course Cartman and Butters think it’s because they ditched the field trip, so they worm their way back inside. Eventually, there’s a shootout, but not before the terrorists threaten to kill Kenny—a big tease, of course. Fourth funniest moment: The Pioneer Village workers refuse to break character and tell them the secret code to a possible escape route, even as they’re being killed.

Grade: C+

Stray Observations:

-- Cartman should say “Oh my Jesus Christ monkey balls?more often.

-- Another amazing Cartman quote: “Life goes by pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, and do whatever you want all the time, you could miss it.?BR>

-- Butters: “I’m so disappointed in myself.?Cartman: “Don’t be too hard on yourself Butters, you can’t help being a douchebag.?

-- Oh my God, they didn’t kill Kenny. Sorry, it had to be said.

South Park: Super Fun Time

(S12E07) For one last time before the summer the bad boys of South Park came to our screens. No, the season isn’t over, but it’s taking its usual break and won’t be back with new episodes for months (probably sometime in October). Yeah, I know, but let’s not think about that and focus on last night’s episode instead. So far, I think this season has been pretty good.

It had its ups and downs, of course, and a few episodes haven’t been as funny as one could have hoped, but this is already the 12th season of the show, and it remains incredibly good, and more than once it had me, and you too I’m sure, laughing out loud. Last night was the mid-season finale, and to celebrate this special occasion we had a somewhat special episode of South Park.

What I mean by this, is that it didn’t feel like many episodes have recently. I’m sure I missed a few references from the episode, I’m sure I always do, but this episode wasn’t really a satire of a recent event, it had no real direct connection with a recent headline from the news, and its plot wasn’t taken directly from a movie, or a genre.

Of course there were references, we all saw a little of Bruce Willis somewhere, but it wasn’t like the plot of the episode was directly taken from inspired from Die Hard either, it wasn’t the typical plot from your zombie flick or anything like that. No, this time it felt a lot more like a typical South Park story, with the boys going on some adventure and having to deal with unbelievable things, much like what we used to see in the first seasons of the show.

This isn’t a complaint, though, absolutely not. I love it when South Park react on a recent event or parody some movie, there’s pretty good at that, but they do not need to do so to be good, and this episode felt like a nice little break from recent satires, to just enjoy the boys?latest journey in South Park. And while I felt like this episode wasn’t as hilarious as previous episodes - to be honest, I’m not sure it really had any laughing out loud moments - it had this overall feeling about it, that made it just really fun.

Take Cartman and Butters escaping to have some “super phun thyme? it don’t think anything from that whole trip made me really laugh out loud, I don’t think anything was that funny, but the whole thing was fun, and I actually enjoyed it. Of course, teaming those two together was a great idea, and to have Cartman throw such great lines at Butters was indeed really great : ?EM>Don’t be too hard on yourself Butters. You can’t help being a douchebag!?/P>

As for the rest of the episode, and those annoying folks who refused to break characters, even when “terrorists?invade their camp and started killing some of their friends, even when they threatened to kill innocent children, they couldn’t break character. And while they knew of a back exit they could have used all along, they couldn’t possibly mention it, of course.

Well, that was fun, so was the fact that those bad guys just robbed?a Burger King! And little things like Mr Garrison caring more for his own safety than any of the kids, or how you might have almost thought for a second they’d kill Kenny again, it was all good stuff, but again none of it were actually hilarious. Still, not once was I bored with it, not once did I wish it’d get funnier and anything, though not hilarious it was funny - you have to love it when Cartman asks Kyle, after he refuses to partner with him, ?EM>Jesus, what have I ever done to you!??- and it felt quite good, I really enjoyed this episode.

Maybe not the most hilarious episode of the season, but a really good episode nonetheless, and a pretty good way to end this first half of the season I think. Now, I can’t wait for the show to return, hopefully with completely hilarious episodes that make you roll on the floor for half an hour or more?/P>

I think last night's episode was funny but I have seen funnier. I like how Butters used Cartman as a weapon, that was so funny.

Another fine episode.  I enjoyed every minute of it.  The terrorists/burger king robbers were funny.  The "stay in character" guys were funny.

My favorite line:
Operator:  Is that the annoying park where the people always stay in character?
Stan:  "Lady, you don't know the half of it!"

The graphic violence was good, once again.  I still don't understand one thing:  Why were they robbing a Burger King?  Or was that just it?  Anyway, good ep, and my congratulations to Matt & Trey for a fine job once again this half-season!!

South Park - "Super Fun Time" (Episode 1207)

The kids go on a field trip to Pioneer Village, "Where History Comes Alive", a recreation of early Colorado days. They're greeted by "Pioneer Paul" who's way into character. Mr. Garrison tells everyone to pick a partner to hold hands with and Cartman is left with Butters. Garrison tells Butters that he's not to let go of Eric's hand until they're back on the bus. The kids visit the different sections of the village, all manned by over-enthusiastic actors (just like a Renaissance Fest!) Stan calls Wendy his "girlfriend" - how cute! Kyle points out that one of the "villagers" is wearing a digital watch. The kids visit the town gunsmith, who points out holes in the fence they used to shoot Indians through. Everyone heads off to other areas, while Cartman and Butters stay behind. Cartman looks through one of the holes and sees "Super Phun Time", a Dave and Busters-esque place. Cartman tells Butters that they should go play some video games. Butters refuses, fearing he will get in trouble - but he also won't let go of Cartman's hand. Cartman drags him away. The rest of the kids visit the General Store. Wendy points out that they even had beef jerky "back then". The characters remind everyone that it's 1864. Then some police cars drive by with sirens blaring, ruining the illusion.

An SUV pulls into Pioneer Village and a group of men pop out and close the gates of the village, trapping all of the kids inside. One of the characters, the "sheriff" asks what's going on and gets shot in the head. Stan tells the guys in the General Store that they need to call the cops, but the guys won't drop the 1864 act. Meanwhile, Cartman and Butters arrive at the arcade and Butters still won't let go of Cartman's hand. Stan, Kyle, Wendy, Jimmy and the two guys from the General Store find the village's administration office and call for help - but there's no dial tone. Kyle asks the men how to dial out and they keep playing their roles. One of the men starts to drop the act and the other one points to a sign that says "Never break character!", so he resumes his act. Kyle gets through to the police. Back at Super Phun Tyme, Cartman and Butters play on the rides, play video games and air hockey, roller skate and have ice cream - all while still holding hands. The best part is watching Butters run alongside Cartman while he's driving a bumper car. Butters says they need to head back so they don't miss the bus, and Cartman reluctantly agrees. Back at the village, the terrorists tell the kids that their robbery attempt was thwarted by the cops and when they clear out of the village, they're going to have to take hostages. The cops arrive and surround the village. The head of the gang tells the others to hide the loot in an office. The cops say that this gang robbed a Burger King, so the "loot" is a couple of bills and some small change - and some burgers too. The head of the gang calls the police to negotiate a deal - or the kids are dead.

Kyle and the gang watch the proceedings from afar, and the General Store guys still refuse to break character. Kyle asks if they have any guns and they tell him that the sheriff has rifles - so Kyle sends them off to retrieve them. Cartman and Butters are still on their way back to the village and Butters tells Cartman that he doesn't want him to tell anyone where they were - and besides, he didn't have a super fun time. Cartman told Butters he needed to chill. They see the cops and assume they were called because they were missing. Butters freaks out. Cartman tells them that they could just sneak back in and say they never left. Butters still refuses to let go of Cartman's hand. The gang try to plan their escape and their tactical guy finds an old mine shaft that was no longer in use because a kid had died in it. It's behind a metal door with a coded lock. If they can get the door open, they can escape. The tactical guy wants his share of the loot before he cracks the door code. He gets his burger. The leader, Franz, continues to torture one of the village employees to get the door code and he refuses to break character - and gets shot in the head. Another employee is asked for the code. He starts to tell them the code and is shot by Pioneer Paul, still (obviously) in character. The gang go in search of any other employees or kids - which means Kyle and the gang have to find a hiding place. Cartman and Butters wait for a break to sneak into the village. They climb up a traffic signal pole and slip - still attached at the hands. The gnag find another employee in the village's "prison" - he also won't break character, despite Franz's pleading. Franz threatens to kill one of the kids if Pioneer Paul doesn't talk - and grabs poor Kenny.

Cartman and Butters are still hanging from the traffic pole. Butters is mad at himself because he feels he failed in keeping an eye on his partner. Cartman sees an opportunity to escape and swing themselves around onto the top of a passing truck. They jump over the fence and land in the village. Franz still needs the code and has his gun poised on Kenny. Stan can't let Kenny get killed and makes the "ultimate sacrifice". He puts dirt on his face and pretends to be one of the folks from 1864 and managed to get the code by talking to them in "1864 speak." The code was 1864, of course. Franz decides to take the hostages anyway, because he's such a mean villain. Cartman and Butters mistake one of the gang for a cop and pretend they've been at the village all day. The goon pulls a gun on them and tells them they have to put their hands behind their heads. They both put the unattached hand behind their head. Butters still won't let go of Cartman's hand. Butters swings Cartman around and he knocks the gun-toting goon to the ground, and the two of them run away. Stan tells the character that had been sprung from the "prison", Murderin' Murphy, that Franz had "killed his pa." Murphy jumped Franz, which gave the cops the chance to rush into the village and save the day. Murderin' MUrphy is still in character and tries to kill Pioneer Paul. Right in the middle of the fight, an announcement comes over the PA - it's 5 o'clock and Pioneer Village is closed. Immediately, everyone breaks character. Wendy complemented Stan on his bravery, but said he sounded like a dork. Franz doesn't completely regret his wrongdoings, he was glad he learned about life in pioneer days. A bloodied Butters drags Cartman to the bus and finally lets go of his hand. That's it for "South Park" for now!

The Secrets of
"Super Fun Time"

by Wild Willie Westwood, with sources from all over the Web

Cartman calls Clyde Craig here, even though Craig and Kenny already paired up.

Super Phun Thyme looks like a Nickelodeon attraction in an amusement park (maybe the Nickelodeon Blast Zone that used to be at Universal Studios Hollywood).

Howdy is a contraction of "How do you do" (How d'ye do > How d'ye > Howdy). Similarly, "What in tarnation?" is short for "What in the entire nation?"

The robbers are all characters from Die Hard, most notable Frans, who is a reference to Hans Gruber.

Seen' as Pioneer Village is set in 1864, the telephone would not have existed. It arrived in 1876.

There does exist a Pioneer Village in Nebraska, but it's not on Kipling. It has items up to the turn of the 20th century, so I'm sure its employees know about the early phones. :)

Heh, more backwards keybaoards. This time it's the 9-1-1 operator.

Cartman's song is a verson of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's "Love Rocket F1-11" with totally different lyrics.

The motorcycle ride Cartman and Butters are on simulates the rooftop motorcycle scene in Tomorrow Never Dies, where Wai Lin has to move around Bond so the ride is as smooth as possible. Butters holding on to Cartman's hand in a firm grip substitutes for the handcuffs tying Wai Lin to Bond.

In the first airing, people noticed several Burger King commercials between the segments. Product tie in, or serendipity?

There's a bus sign near the mail box. It says SPRT BUS. SPRT is for South Park Rapid Transit, so this episode is meant to take place in South Park. It's not a little redneck mountain town anymore.

The smithy's employee profile has him named David Palmer. So why did Pioneer Paul call him Chad under his breath early in the episode?

David Palmer was a character in 24 who was President of the United States and who was later assassinated in season 5 of that show.

The lights at the traffic signal Cartman wants to climb across are facing the wrong direction. And the arm is too long, but that helps explain the traffic lights.

A carriage house is what we call a garage now. Even when cars became plentiful, there were carriage houses built alongside Queen Anne houses and cars were parked in them. Fancier carriage houses have living areas over the garage.

"Well howdy there, strangers." - Stan wasn't in Village character there. He should have used "partners."

Stan figured out that the way to transmit modern technology to 1860's folk is to use terminology they'd be familiar with. Combination safes were already around, so opening something using numbers was not unknown. They didn't need to know that it opened electrically instead of mechanically.
