Torchwood

 "Everything Changes"

Good evening, Torchwood watchers, and welcome to the blog of this BBC show's American premiere. Let's get right to it and meet the cast of characters: The star, of course, is Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), whom some of you may know already from his appearances on Doctor Who. Charming, handsome and unabashedly bisexual (or perhaps more aptly "omnisexual"), he's the head of a group of investigators out to solve crime of the strangest sort in Cardiff, Wales. His team consists of Owen Harper (Burn Gorman), a scientist who apparently enjoys the nightlife; Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori), the technology gal with a penchant for classic literature; Ianto Jones (Gareth David Lloyd), Torchwood's "clean-up man," who makes sure the team has all they need; and Suzie Costello (Indira Varma), Captain Jack's number two, who, as we'll see, has a hand in the evening's serial killings.

Oh, and let's not forget Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), the cop with a seemingly ordinary life, who finds herself swept up in the mystery of Torchwood. She's at the site of a murder, in the rain, wearing a funny checkered Brit police hat, when Torchwood rushes on to the scene, pushing back all the regular crew. When they first appear, the investigators are all in long black coats (very Neo-esque). Annoyed that she's been dismissed, Gwen finds a good vantage point to watch all the action, and she gets a bit more than she'd bargained for when Suzie takes out a metal glove that zaps the poor murder victim back to life ?for two minutes. The crew asks him who killed him, but he was stabbed once in the back and didn't see anything. We actually see a softer, more vulnerable, side of Captain Jack early on, as he asks the man to tell him what he saw at the moment of his death ("nothing" was the terrified response).

The next day, Gwen can't get Captain Jack and his crew out of her mind, and when she ends up in the hospital after a bar brawl, she's treated to a glimpse of his coat running up a set of stairs. She ends up at a sealed-off wing, which an orderly explains has some kind of bio contamination. Of course she walks in, and finds an odd figure ahead of her; it's clear that this is not your average fella. Convinced that he's just wearing some kind of mask (man, I wish I could get me one of those for a Halloween costume), Gwen approaches him. After the orderly blusters in and gets a little too close, the Weevil (that's no mask; he's in fact a blood-sucking alien) attacks him and Captain Jack rushes her out of the hall. The team speeds off, but Gwen follows, and later discovers their headquarters.

A cross between the bat cave and 24's CTU facilities, the Torchwood HQ is a sight to behold. For one thing, it's full of alien technology (which, Captain Jack eventually explains, has been confiscated in order to help arm Earth for the future, because "the 21st century is when it all changes"). Cardiff is the perfect place for just such an operation, he says, because there's a space-time rift smack dab in the middle of the city. Oh, and did I mention the pterodactyl flying around the office? Guess that's where the "time" part comes in.

Alas, Gwen is not meant to remember all this, as Captain Jack slips her an amnesia pill; before it kicks in, she types out what she's seen, but Ianto "cleans up" by removing the file from her computer. When she sees an image of the murder weapon at work the next day, though, it triggers a flash of a memory, leading her back to the Torchwood headquarters area. There she encounters Suzie, who admits to the killings and threatens to off Gwen as well. Turns out Suzie was using an alien dagger to kill folks around Cardiff, just so she could use the resurrection-glove on them to gain more control of it. But just before she can attack Gwen, Captain Jack appears to save the day. Except that Suzie shoots him in the head. But wait ?he's not dead! It seems that Captain Jack can't die, which likely explains his earlier fascination with what happens at the moment of mortality. Suzie, however, can die, and when she turns the gun on herself, that's the end of her. After seeing what can happen when good technology goes bad, Toshiko and Owen hand over the alien swag they'd been hording: for Toshiko, a super-scanner reader device, and for Owen, an alien pheromone spray that makes him sexually irresistible.

With a position now open, Captain Jack offers Gwen a job, and she doesn't take very long to accept it. Who can blame her? Looks like fun already!

Yes. You read that correctly. This is a video of John Barrowman singing “The Time Warp?from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. (It is quite possible that this video will hurt your brain, depending upon how you feel about said cinema experience. You are officially warned.) This is a stage performance, complete with backup dancers. That’s right..backup dancers.

So…enjoy.

Meet Torchwood's New Cast Members

Details of four new cast members for Torchwood: Children of Earth have been released, and with them some idea of what's lying in store for the few remaining members of Wales' favorite investigators of the weird in their upcoming five episode fifth season. Perhaps unsurprisingly, "secrets from the past" and governmental employees figure prominently.

According to producer Peter Bennett, the newcomers to the show are:

Alice: Played by Lucy Cohu, Alice is described as "a woman keeping many secrets from the past".

Bridget Spears: Susan Brown plays "a character vitally connected to the government, which plays an important part in this story," says Bennett, which may explain why I thought "Harriet Jones," when I first read the name, inexplicably.

Lois Habiba: The amazingly named Cush Jumbo takes on the role of "a secretary who hacks into some vital information," according to Bennett. Some vital information kept on governmental databases, perhaps...?

Doctor Rupesh Patanjali: Rik Makarem is "a junior doctor at St Helen's hospital who gets drawn into Torchwood's investigations."

So now we know that the third season has something to do with a hospital, the past, and the government... oh, and also a hacker who discovers some vital information. Put that together with the title of the season, and I'm hoping that we're about to see a season where a junior doctor at St. Helen's hospital discovers that everyone in the British government is actually an alien, only to be killed by the government, only for that to be uncovered by a secretarial hacker, who... Okay, I admit it. We don't really have enough information to make that good a guess yet.

The new season of Torchwood makes it to British screens next year.

Torchwood:

And speaking of spoilery pics, here are some set pics from the final episode of the five-part Torchwood miniseries. Looks like the Torchwood HQ, the Hub, gets well and truly trashed. And that woman dressed in black may be behind it somehow. The woman tells the paramedics searching the rubble there's no rush. Eventually, the paramedics take away a small body bag in a private ambulance, possibly containing Jack?

Torchwood:

As you've seen from the stills, the alien-hunting Torchwood crew's headquarters, the Hub, gets blown up. And it turns out this is the work of a group called "Children of the Earth." Ianto and Gwen survive unscathed, but Jack gets carried out in a body bag. (Probably not for long.) The show will build a whole new "Hub" for season four, if any ?but it remains to be seen how Torchwood keeps the police and paramedics from noticing all the alien artifacts and bodies amongst the wreckage. Plus, what happens to Jack's brother Gray, in cold storage?

Torchwood:

It sounds as though there will be at least one monster in the new Torchwood miniseries that requires a guy in a rubber suit. Ood/Cyberman/random monster actor Matt Doman (who just won a modeling contest, out of costume) says he has a small speaking part in the new season.

Torchwood:

What's happening in the third, shorter, season of the Doctor Who spinoff? Says John Barrowman:

Well, you'll find out more about Jack's dark past and a lot about Gwen too. There's going to be some deaths, some new faces, some surprises and an event that will almost destroy the world. There's also going to be a shocking event instigated by Jack that people will be totally floored by.

Also, the dearly departed Tosh and Owen get mentioned.

Torchwood:

Liz May Brice plays Johnson, a mysterious government agent who wants to expose the existence of Torchwood ?and aliens ?to the public. She has the gunslinging skills of a crack commando and the allure of Lara Croft, apparently. I'm just guessing she ends up joining the team. Just a thought.

Torchwood:

W00t! Finally an actual plot synopsis of the new miniseries. According to producer Peter Bennett:

It's different to every other year. It's not a story about spaceships, but it's about a government that did a deal with aliens back in the '60s, and they're now dealing with the consequences of that deal when the sins of their past come back to haunt them.

And the resulting kerfuffle is something that affects all the "children of Earth." Hence the title. Also, without Tosh and Owen, we see a new side to the remaining characters. Rhys helps out more, and there's a new character, a young lady played by Cush Jumbo, who helps out too. And we meet some new characters, including "Peter Capaldi, who's fantastic as the government middle man caught up in the storm, Liz May Brice as a covert government agent and Paul Copely as a damaged man."

'Torchwood' Details Revealed

"Basically from a concept, we wanted to go down the children dilemma route,?he said of the title. “Because this storyline is a subject that's going to affect all the children of Earth, it was a natural title to come up with.?BR>
As for the actual plot, Bennett explained, "It's different to every other year. It's not a story about spaceships, but it's about a government that did a deal with aliens back in the '60s, and they're now dealing with the consequences of that deal when the sins of their past come back to haunt them."

The biggest change is that the third season is a mere five episodes, to be broadcast across consecutive days. "Having done 26 standalone stories, we kind of wanted to take this series to another level and by making it one story over five nights, we feel we've done that. It's big, it's epic, and it's very different.

“Telling one story has also given us the opportunity to have one director across the whole series, Euros Lyn, who's been incredible and taken the show to a new level."

The script was produced by James Moran, John Fay and Russell T Davies, which also deals with the team in the wake of losing two of their own at the end of season two. "We sort of bring in Gwen's husband Rhys (Kai Owen),?the producer said. “He was always on the fringes anyway but he takes a much more active part in the storyline now. And we've got a new young lady who helps the team - I wouldn't say she's part of the team but she kind of helps them out. She's played by a new actress called Cush Jumbo, who's a very pretty young lady and who I'm sure is going to go on to bigger things.

“Also we've got new characters, people like Peter Capaldi, who's fantastic as the government middle man caught up in the storm, Liz May Brice as a covert government agent and Paul Copely as a damaged man."

While air dates have not been announced, spring seems likely based on Bennett’s comments regarding the series?current status.

"We've just started our second week of post editing and we're in a position to have a look at our first episode. We've just shown our executive producers the first cut version of the first episode and this week we're hoping to show them the first cut of the second episode. It's a very very tough post schedule. We've only got one director, but we've got three cutting rooms running simultaneously and he's literally running between all three. We have to deliver the whole thing, with all effects and music, by March. So to do five one-hours is a real tough schedule, particularly because we've got so much amazing material. I'd guess we're two thirds of the way through and the last third is a struggle - but a nice struggle."

Looks like I may watch our version, but you can bet I will be watching the British verson first...
bastards US people.....

US Censors Torchwood's Third Season... Kind Of

When Torchwood returns for its third season and something seems a little... off, comfort yourself with the knowledge that the reason behind the show's self-censorship is the proud country known as the United States.

According to the show's star, John Barrowman, the show will be... more subtle in its third season so as not to offend American sensibilities:

We're not swearing or doing anything close to the bone because it's been a huge success in the US and the networks won't accept it with all that stuff in it... I'll still be getting naked and it will still be saucy - but it's done with taste. We'll doing everything so it doesn't have to be heavily edited for the US.

Has BBC America really been censoring the show that much, or is mention of "the networks" a sign that the Torchwood mini-season might be lined up as a summer special on one of the US broadcast networks?
