Dancing with the Stars 7: Why Warren Sapp Should Win

Dancing with the Stars - Kym Johnson and Warren SappDancing with the Stars served up a star-studded results show last night, with performances by the great mistress of soul, Aretha Franklin herself, as well as our own Julianne Hough showing off her other career as a country singer. There was still a lot of great dancing to be seen because all of these musical performances were accompanied by our favorite professional dancers. As far as results shows go, it was pretty entertaining.

But! We need to get down to business. Cody Linley has received the boot, so there are only three stars headed for the finals: Brooke Burke, Lance Bass and Warren Sapp. Each of these three stars brings something different to the Dancing with the Stars table. Each appeals to a different kind of fan. For the rest of this week, I'll analyze all the reasons why each of these celebs deserves to win the mirror ball trophy.

First, Warren. Warren is amazing. How can a 300-pound guy move the way he does? He defies all expectations. Heck, the man practically defies gravity.

The thing I love about Warren is all of his incongruities. He looks completely ferocious, and he probably is. I mean, you don't get the nickname QBKilla for nothing. But there's also something really earnest and cute about him too. I mean, the man loves sparkles on his clothes! How can you not root for him? His ferocity really helps him in his performances, especially in styles like the paso doble or the tango. And his earnestness helps keep him going in rehearsals. He might be the hardest-working star left on Dancing with the Stars, and you can tell by the expression on his face that he really wants to win.

Of course, probably the greatest gift that Warren has is his ability to connect with the audience. He always has everyone on their feet. His footwork might be lacking the crispness of Brooke's, perhaps, but he can look out into the audience and see into their souls. That is a rare gift, and an extremely useful one if you are looking for votes.

Dancing with the Stars 7: Semi-Finals Results Live Thoughts

Dancing with the Stars - Julianne Hough and Cody LinleyWe've made it nine weeks into season 7 of Dancing with the Stars, and now we're down to the penultimate results show of the season.

Last night, Lance and Lacey were able to decisively take the lead over Brooke and Derek.  They earned accolade after accolade, leaving the competition wide open.

Tonight, we've got another star-studded results show, and more importantly, we'll find out which of the four remaining dancers will have to end their journey tonight.  Stay with me all night as I provide you with live thoughts.

Tonight's results show begins immediately, without any recap of last night's performances at all. Instead, we are treated to the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, singing "Chain of Fools," accompanied by the dancing of Anna Trebunskaya, Karina Smirnoff, Louis van Amstel and Dmitry Chaplin (of So You Think You Can Dance), who could really use a haircut. I love Aretha, but she is one laaarge lady.

OK, now we get the recap of last night, including Brooke's fall from grace.

After the break, Leona Lewis performs, "Bleeding Love."  Wow, Maks and Karina dance to this song, and they are h-h-hot.

Now, the judges give their two cents about what each couple brings to the competition.  I'm glad that Bruno talks about Lance's quirkiness because if it were Len talking, he would just be Mr. Crankypants again.

Back from commercials.  Julianne Hough takes the stage, but instead of dancing, she sings her latest single, "My Hallelujah Song."  The crowd is going nuts for her.  I really can't believe how talented she is.  Awww, Derek Hough and Mark Ballas dance with her as she sings.  It's like a reunion of the band they used to have.  Then Lacey does a barefoot contemporary solo.  It feels like SYTYCD.  Where's Cat Deeley?  Cute!  Derek gives her a high-five at the end of the song.

Half-way through the Dancing with the Results show, and still no word on who's staying and who's going.  Instead, we have another performance, this time by John Legend.  He performs "Green Light."

Awww, normally, I get bored by the testimonial filler that they tend to have on the results show, but there is a segment now in which the family and loved ones of the stars talk about how proud they are of them.  It's heartwarming.  I think I love Jimmy Bass (Lance's granddad) the most.  He kind of rocks.

Aretha Franklin is back with her classic "Respect."  Ooh, cool, current Dancing with the Stars champions Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas are dancing to the song as well.  Kristi is just awesome.  So glad she's back!

Uh oh, time for a cheesy pre-taped segment with each celeb, reading off of cue cards and sizing up his or her competition.  Yawn.

Finally, the results.  Millions voted last night and combining the judges' scores with our votes, in no particular order, here are the couples who will live to dance in the finals: Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer, Brooke Burke and Derek Hough, and argh, we'll have to wait until after the final commercial break to find out the identiy of the third couple.

Annnnnd we're back.  Lance and Lacey, and Brook and Derek are safe.  The third couple who will be joining them next week is Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson.  That means that Cody Linley and Julianne Hough are eliminated.

Who Should Win 'Dancing with the Stars'?

Dancing with the StarsThe season 7 finale of Dancing with the Stars is less than one week away, and fans are placing bets on who will take home the Mirror Ball this year.  Warren Sapp, Lance Bass and Brooke Burke have all developed vocal and rabid fan bases this season, and the Dancing with the Stars finale is sure to be a hotly contested battle.

Typically at this time, you can look at the track records of the professional dancers, but none of the pros has won in the past.  In fact, Kym Johnson is the only remaining contestant with finale experience, finishing second in season 4 with Joey FatoneLacey Schwimmer is, of course, in her first season on Dancing with the Stars, and a victory for her could be a signal that So You Think You Can Dance is quite good at finding talent.

If it's Dancing with the Stars history you're going on, Warren Sapp has the clear edge, as the past four winners have all been athletes.  However, being a football player is a mixed bag.  Emmitt Smith won the competition in season 3, but in seasons 2 and 6, Jerry Rice and Jason Taylor each finished as runners-up.

Either way, the finale is sure to be exciting.  Dancing with the Stars airs the final performance show Monday at 8pm and the final live results show will be a special two-hour event on Tuesday from 9-11pm.

Dancing with the Stars 7: Warren Sapp's Five Best Dances

Kym Johnson and Warren SappIn the next few days before the Dancing with the Stars season finale, I'll be comparing and contrasting the strengths and weaknesses that the three remaining stars and their professional dance partners bring to the table. Along with discussing the merits of each celebrity and why he or she deserves a spot in the finals, let's also take a step down memory lane and remember all the performances that have led to this point.

I've already expounded today on the reasons why Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson deserve to win Dancing with the Stars. This retired NFL player has charisma to burn and can boogie down with the best of them. Let's take a look at Warren and Kym's top five best performances of the season.

And don't forget to tune into Dancing with the Stars for the final performance show this Monday. The final three couples will compete against each other for the right to be crowned the champion of Dancing with the Stars. This is, of course, my favorite night of the whole season because it will feature the popular freestyle round. Then, don't forget, Tuesday night's final results show will be two whole hours. Don't miss it!

#5. Hustle ?Week 5

This season of Dancing with the Stars brought a lot of new twists and turns. Halfway through the competition, the powers that be introduced us to four new dance styles never before seen on the show. And boy, it was an entertaining night. Warren and Kym boogied and woogied like it was 1974. They had strong lifts and attitude to spare, and even Len had nothing but good things to say about it. This performance exactly epitomizes how great he is at connecting with the audience

#4 - Viennese Waltz

Warren might have a hulking frame, but he is also so smooth. The Viennese waltz is the epitome of romance in the ballroom world, and this performance had my little heart going pitter-patter.
#3 - Paso Doble

This paso doble was not a perfect performance, but it was still amazing. It’s even more impressive if you remember that Warren and Kym performed this way back in the second week. Their Matrix-style costumes were perfect, and the ferocious attitude was just right. This is one of my favorite performances of t he whole season.
#2 - Rumba

The rumba is probably the most intensely sensual of the ballroom styles. It’s slower paced, which means that any mistakes you might make are all the more visible. This is probably one of the more difficult styles out there, but Mr. Sapp, the QBKilla, outdoes himself yet again.
#1 - Jive

Warren Sapp is just about the funnest competitor in this competition (after Cloris Leachman, maybe), and the jive is the perfect styles for him. He gets to rock out for a little tiny solo where he freestyles it Sapp-style. Everything about this dance is just so fun and flirty, from the wink he start with to the huge smile he ends with. Great job, Warren and Kym!

Dancing with the Stars 7: Why Brooke Burke Should Win

Brooke Burke and Derek HoughIn anticipation of the Dancing with the Stars seventh season finale next week, I'm taking time all week to weigh the chances that each of the three remaining couples has in claiming the coveted mirror ball trophy. Today, it's Brooke Burke and Derek Hough's turn to take a twirl under my microscope.

Brooke Burke has the most natural dance talent of all the celebrities left in the competition. Since the very beginning of the season, she has continued to impress both the audience and the judges with her amazing technique. Every model and pageant girl out there in America should get down on their hands and knees and thank her for proving that pretty girls can have talent. She has definitively broken the pretty girl curse on Dancing with the Stars, and next season, the token beauty in the cast won't necessarily be saddled with baggage from the likes of Paulina Porizkova or Josie Maran.

Lately, the judges have been echoing Derek Hough's assertion that Brooke is as good as a professional dancer. OK, she's good, but I think saying that she's basically a pro is not giving enough credit to all the hard-working real professionals on the show. Nonetheless, I do agree that she has exceptionally crisp footwork and beautiful lines. I agree with Len Goodman that her hyper-extendable legs are definitely an asset.

Brooke hasn't always had a perfect season, however. Her jive this week was riddled with mistakes, earning her and Derek their worst score all season. But I'm inclined to overlook that. I mean, not everyone can be perfect all the time, and she did step it up with a spectacular salsa in the very same night.

One thing that Brooke needs to work on, however, is connecting with the audience. She doesn't have the warmth of Warren Sapp's personality, or the Lance Bass' quirkiness, so I think that she can come across as a bit cold. When she tries to engage with the audience during her routines, she tends to miss her steps, as she did in the aforementioned jive. But here's where Derek can help her. Derek is a crowd-pleasing performer, and if he can just figure out how to get Brooke to become one too, then I think that there's no stopping these two.

Julianne Hough says she's done with 'Dancing'

It looks like getting voted off "Dancing With the Stars" this week may have been the swan song for Julianne Hough.

People magazine is reporting that the "Dancing" queen is looking to exit ABC's reality hit.

"I'm not gonna be back next season," Hough told Ryan Seacrest Thursday. "I really, really want to focus on the music and, ya know, be taken seriously a little bit. And I think it's hard to be on [Dancing] and be singing."

Hough and partner Cody Linley ("Hannah Montana") were eliminated from "Dancing With the Stars" on Tuesday. Last month, the singer/dancer underwent appendectomy surgery. She told Seacrest that her boyfriend, country crooner Chuck Wicks, helped her recover.

Hough also recently released a Christmas album called "Sounds of the Season."

Dancing with the Stars 7: Why Lance Bass Should Win

Lacey Schwimmer and Lance BassThis is it, folks. I’ve been going through all the remaining couples who will be competing in the Dancing with the Stars final performance show this Monday night, and I’m now down to the last couple. It is Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer’s turn to undergo some scrutiny.

Lance Bass is a former member of *NSYNC, and although he keeps insisting that he was worst dancer in the boy band and that he’s really not all that good, we can see through this false modesty. Although he definitely has a lot of things he needs to work on ?his footwork and pigeon-toedness, for starters ?I believe that his experience in *NSYNC really has given him an advantage. Because of his background, he knows how to give a good show and to engage with the audience. He’s a crowd pleaser.

Lance is definitely a great performer and he’s got a unique sense of style that perfectly matches that of newcomer Lacey Schwimmer. You can tell from their rehearsal footage and from their interviews backstage that they have grown to be very close friends, and that can only help them.

Lacey Schwimmer, of course, might be a newcomer to Dancing with the Stars, but she is old hat in the world of televised dance competitions, being a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance. She is a talented choreographer who gives Lance visually interesting and unique material to work with. Len Goodman might not appreciate their quirks, but he doesn’t get to pick the winner, does he? Sometimes, this couple veers too far into modern and hip hop dance styles, but when they strike the right balance between quirk and tradition, they are unstoppable.

He’s not the most technically proficient dancer in the competition ?that would be Brooke Burke ?but he and Lacey always bring something new and fresh to the dance floor every week that none of the other couples have. And these past couple of weeks, he has really worked hard to improve his sloppy footwork. It’s going to be an interesting Dancing with the Stars finale, and I can’t wait to see who will outperform whom.

Dancing with the Stars 7: Brooke Burke's Five Best Dances

Brooke Burke and Derek HoughIn the next few days before the Dancing with the Stars season finale, I'll be comparing and contrasting the strengths and weaknesses that the three remaining stars and their professional dance partners bring to the table. Along with discussing the merits of each celebrity and why he or she deserves a spot in the finals, let's also take a step down memory lane and remember all the performances that have led to this point.

Brooke, Brooke, Brooke. If this competition were purely based on technique and skill, then Brooke should definitely win, hands down, no complaints from me.

But, as we all know, the Dancing with the Stars results are determined half by judges and half by us viewers at home. While we've had a pretty good education in ballroom dance after watching seven seasons of the show on TV, most of us are not trained dancers who can correctly scrutinize the different steps and styles that the dancers perform. That said, however, I feel confident saying that we all have a really good idea of what looks good and what looks exciting versus what is boring or sloppy. That's why I don't think you need to be a trained professional in any given field to be able to review and critique it.

So let's use the critical eyes that we have honed from many hours of watching Dancing with the Stars and other dance shows, and let's take a trip through Brooke's five best dances of the season.

#5. Viennese waltz,Week 3

Brooke and Derek make such a handsome pair. They are really good at creating smoldering chemistry between each other on the dance floor. This Viennese waltz is gorgeous and displays Brooke's impressive strength, control and flexibility. It is smooth and elegant, utterly romantic and lyrical. It was everything you could ask for in a waltz.

#4 - Salsa

Brooke really excels at the slinky styles in which you have to shake and roll your hips. She might be a tiny little thing, but she’s really strong too, as those lifts show. It’s not easy to do what she does and make it looks so easy at the same time. I especially love the climactic ending in which Derek literally sweeps Brooke off her feet.

#3 - Jitterbug

Season 7 of Dancing with the Stars will have a special place in my heart for introducing new fun dance styles to the competition, like the jitterbug. There’s almost no other dance style that is quite as fun as this one. I love Brooke and Derek’s ?0s-styles costumes (especially Derek’s straight-out-of-American Graffiti pompadour). This high-energy performances was just a rollicking good time for one and all, and earned them a nearly perfect 29 out of 30.

#2 - Mambo

This performance was the one in which Brooke was required to perform a 15-second or longer solo, and Brooke rocked it out. The mambo, just like the salsa, really shows off Brooke’s impeccably hip motions and footwork. I think the difficulty of this performance was impressive enough, but I think Brooke and Derek also captured the true spirit of the mambo, making it a very enjoyable viewing experience.

#1 - Foxtrot

It was really tough to choose which of Brooke’s many excellent performances was my favorite, but I think I have to go with this foxtrot. She and Derek and beautiful synchronicity, beautiful extension. Brooke was perfectly poised, elegant and flawless. But it was her ability to get into character that made me love this performance. No wonder it also earned her a perfect 30 out of 30, as well.

Fans Decide Who They Want to Win 'Dancing with the Stars'

Dancing with the StarsIt's down to just three teams left on Dancing with the Stars now: Brooke Burke and Derek Hough, Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer, and Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson. We recently asked all of you fans out there to weigh in with your opinion on which couple you want to see become the next champions of Dancing with the Stars. You voted and I've got the results right here.

But before I get to that, I just wanted to remind you that tonight is the final performance show of the season. Beginning at 8pm, the final three will have one last opportunity to impress viewers at home, including another Samba Smackdown. Then, tomorrow night, of course, is the two-hour season finale beginning at 9pm in which one team will be crowned the winner. As in years past, previously eliminated contestants from the season to take the stage one more time.

And now, without further ado, the results of our  “Who Do You Want to Win Dancing with the Stars?is Lance Bass, with 137 votes and 43 percent of the total votes cast. Warren Sapp came in second place with 97 votes and 30 percent of the total votes. Finally, in last place, Brooke Burke garnered just 86 votes, 27 percent of the total.

If the viewers have any say in anything ?and you know their voice makes up half of the decision ?then Lance Bass and newcomer Lacey Schwimmer will be victorious tomorrow night.

But actually, it's not that simple. In the same post in which we presented the showdown, we put in a poll with the question: “Who should win??In this instance, Brooke Burke came out ahead by a landslide, taking fully 50 percent of all votes cast. Lance came in second with 39 percent, and Warren got a mere 11 percent.

I think this just goes to show you that our unscientific methods of gathering public opinion data are in no danger of becoming scientific any time soon. Also, this tells us that public opinion fluctuates wildly for Dancing with the Stars. The competition is still wide open, and we'll just have to wait and see what transpires.

Dancing with the Stars 7: Lance Bass' Five Best Dances

Lacey Schwimmer and Lance BassAll this week, during the last few days before the Dancing with the Stars season finale, I've been comparing and contrasting the strengths and weaknesses that the three remaining stars and their professional dance partners bring to the table. Along with discussing the merits of each celebrity and why he or she deserves a spot in the finals, I've also gone on a little trip down memory lane to remember all the performances that have led to this point. Today is the last look back, this time focusing on Lance and Lacey.

Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer are the wild child couple of this season of Dancing with the Stars. They have tried head judge Len Goodman's patience to no end this season with their modern dance elements and their insistence on pushing the envelope. They've done everything from turning tango into the latest cool goth trend and going barefoot, both on purpose and by accident. They always bring us a fresh perspective on the world of ballroom dance, and I really respect them for sticking to their guns and keeping the fun flavor in their routines in spite of all the negative criticism they keep getting from Len.

What's your opinion on this controversial couple, made up of one former member of the singing and dancing boy band *NSYNC and one former finalist on So You Think You Can Dance and West coast swing dancing champion? Need a refresher? Let's take a look back at their five best performances from the season.

#5. Paso doble, week 2

We all know by now that Lance Bass is gay, but that doesn't mean he can't have fun kissing a girl. This unique paso doble had Len Goodman's knickers in a twist because of all the modern feel they brought to this style. But I loved it. I thought they still had a lot of the traditional paso doble silhouettes and poses. At least Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli appreciated the risk they took in modernizing this style.

#4 - Jive

One of Lance's biggest assets is the incredibly infectious fun he has whenever he's on the dance floor. This jive really exemplifies how great he is at entertaining. He and Lacey have fabulous chemistry together, probably because they seem to be such good friends, and they just have a rollicking good time together

#3 - Tango

This Disturbia tango is the quintessential Lance and Lacey performance. It's definitely quirky, telling the story of a little goth wind-up doll, and the dance is so stylish and cool that you can't help but be riveted to the screen. It's also the performance that finally made head crankypants Len Goodman change his mind about Lance and Lacey. Rather than ragging on their penchant for introducing anachronistically modern elements to their routines, he was pleased with how much traditional tango they blended in with the goth. This is definitely one of my favorites.

#2 - Rumba

This rumba really got Len Goodman's knickers in a twist, first for the park bench prop that started and ended the routine, but also because of the bare feet. Lance and Lacey took a risk in dancing with no shoes, and it ended up hurting them score-wise. Nevertheless, it is one of my favorite of their routines. Lacey is right: the rumba really is a wonderfully earthy, sensuous dance that digs deep into your emotions. I thought this was an excellent routine that deserved a much higher score.
#1 - Jitterbug

If I've learned anything from this season of Dancing with the Stars, it is that I love the jitterbug. Is there possibly a more fun style than the highly energetic and entertaining jitterbug? Lance dedicated this performance to his grandfather, who is possibly the cutest grandfather ever, and he danced it so hard and with so much heart that he even lost his shoe in the middle of it. This is only of my favorites of the whole season.

Season 8 of Dancing with the Stars premieres on Monday, March 9. So far, neither the celebrity nor the professional cast has been announced yet, but I think we're all hoping that everybody stays healthy this season. Unfortunately for the professionals, there isn't all that much time between the end of the current Dancing with the Stars national tour and the beginning of rehearsals with the next season's cast.
