The USS Dauntless slowed down with grace and ease to its rendezvous coordinates with the USS Intrepid.  On board it had several members of the USS Intrepid's crew, new and old.  Among them was Captain Jessica Venger, returning from shore leave.

Her trip had been left much to be desired, of course she had never really wanted to go on it anyway, but orders were orders....  It did have its high points but she was ready to get back to the Intrepid.  Already she had a lot of business to attend to.

Walking out of her guest quarters, she was met by the Captain of the vessel and long time friend, Cameron Norris.  Together they walked, until they reached the door of the transporter room and said their goodbyes.

Turning around she entered the transporter room, and looked at the faces of the crew members that were transporting with her.  Each had a sort of eagerness within their eyes... It is time to return.

"Let's head back men"

Carter Greyhorse was in his quarters ready to begin his first shift as the ships new Chief Counselor. He had spent the past couple of days getting accustomed to the layout of the ship and finding out how it operated. He stood in front of his mirror and prepped his uniform making sure there were no noticeable imperfections. He wanted to make a good first impression... well second impression. He sighed, turned, and walked out of his quarters and towards the turbo-lift. It had been awhile since Carter has last been on a starship and the past 3 days had been a sweet reminder of how good life was out in space. But now it was time to get to work.

He walked in to the turbo lift "Bridge, please." the turbo lift quietly hummed as it brouight him closer to his destination. He never knew why he always told the computer please when he asked it to do something. It was just a manner of habit and he couldn't help it, even if the computer never responded in kind. The doors opened and Carter walked quietly onto the bridge. He looked at the planet displayed on the view-screen for a good long time. Although he, like the rest of the crew, had never seen or even heard of this planet, he had a good feeling about it. He normally had a good sense of these things, which is partially what made him so good at his job.

He looked around the bridge once more and saw Commander Knox doing what seemed like inspections of each station. Carter had begun to look at the profiles of the bridge officers over the past few days and recognized the officer Commander Knox was currently visiting as Ensign William Hawke. His orders were to report to the Captain in her ready room for further instructions. He walked around the perimeter if the bridge and into the ready room. He looked and saw the Captain sitting in her chair viewing PADD's intensely. As he approached her desk her attention was drawn from her work to the familiar officer in front of her.

"Lieutenant Commander Carter Greyhorse reporting for duty sir."

Commander Knox was about to walk on untill he heard the remark fritzy readings. Looking at the councile display for a minute considerd the options.

" Mr . Hawke look a bit more into the onomoly please and report andy finding as soon as you can. I dont like the idea of suprises and quarks like this is normaly a tail sign of such. I'll report this to the Captain and asure its being looked at. "

Turning after getting a little more details of the frizy sensor bounce back reading headed to the Captains away room. Stopping at the door tap the announcer to get the Captains attention.

" Captain Venger this is the XO reporting bridge status. "

Hawke gave a rather sketchy salute to the XO's back and began running through some diagnostic routines. The sensor problem didn't seem all that bad, it wasn't enough to hide a ship or even a primitive nuclear mine. But the XO said he wanted it to be tracked down and so Hawke did his best to find out what the problem was. That was the trouble with senior officers, once they got into that command stratosphere, they tended to get awfully concerned about trivial matters. Hawke didn't particularly mind doing some busy work now and then, it kept life from becoming too dull. It was just that in a crisis, if the senior officers lost sight of the important objectives by getting too sidelined on the little details... well, it sufficed to say that Hawke didn't want to be anywhere near the Intrepid when that happened.

He called up a circuit diagnostic and found the root of the problem. Apparently it was one of the neurogel packs was acting up. Hawke got up from his seat and said, "There's a problem with the gel pack at junction 24-56-A, I'm on it."

Hawke set the console to keep him appraised of any developments and put the ship on auto-pilot. As they were in orbit, there really wasn't that much to do, just blip the thrusters now and then to keep the orbit stable. Gravity would just do the rest.

He got into the turbolift and headed down to deck 24.

Captain Venger sat behind her desk reviewing the data from the planet, it was all fairly interesting.  Granted it all could wait for a few hours, even the next day but she kept on.  The ship was well into Beta shift and the day had taken an obvious toll on her.  She should take a break before the reception in the Conference Room for the Brentarans during this time but, of course, she would not.

After hearing the door to her ready room open, she finished a sentence and looked up to find Lt Cmdr Carter Greyhorse before her.  She had served with him before on the Triumph and she knew he was a good officer.  Times were different then, she was different then.  Command did that sort of thing to you.

"Lieutenant Commander Carter Greyhorse reporting for duty sir."

"It's good to see you again, Commander.  I hope you will enjoy your time here on the Intrepid and I hope that your space legs are adjusting well."

<Carter>

"Well to get down to business, as you know there is currently a Brentaran delegation on board being led by Lt MacGregor.  We encountered one of their probes which led us here to their planet.  Obviously that means we are still learning about them, I think you will be a factor in that.  In a few hours there will be a reception for them in the Conference Room and you will be there.  Any other things you need to know are probably in reports that have been sent to your office.  Do you have any questions?"

"It's been an interesting transition sir, but going smooth so far. It's a beautiful ship, but quite large. I must admit, I got lost the first couple of days."

"No sir. And I'm honored to be present during the reception, to be part of this incredible discovery. From what I've read of the reports the Brentarans seem both friendly and reasonable. If things go well we might have a new member of the federation on our hands." He smiled and looked around the room.

"Look at you, captain of a big starship. We'll have to catch up sometime, maybe grab a bite in ten-forward. And of course you can always come to me for counsel or a good game of chess if you'd like. But as one of two officers that can relieve you sir, I must inform you that I have to evaluate your capabilities to run this ship effectively so we will be seeing each other periodically. I will also be evaluating the senior staff on a regular basis. So if that is all sir I will return to my office and await the big meeting you discoverer of planets you."

Carter smiled again and politely made his way out of the ready room.

"Jesus," Hawke breathed. Currently he was cramped into a tiny crawlspace on deck 24. He'd just pried off the cover to the hatch and found the neuro-gel pack that was causing the trouble with the sensor grid.

The gel pack was two months past its expiration date. Hawke was suddenly reminded of some milk that he had in his fridge and made a note to have the fridge beamed of the ship in a particalized state. It really wouldn't do to have some type of mutated lactose monster running around the ship. At least not until Hawke could be assured of having alot of choclate chip cookies. That thought brought a momentary grin to his lips but he quickly regained control.

With deft movements, he swapped out the gel pack and replaced it with a fresh one that he'd grabbed from an engineering stores locker on his way down. When he was finished, he sealed the plate back up and made a note in the engineering log about what he'd done, it was basic procedure after all.

He crawled back out of the "tube" and feeling a bit hungry, headed to the mess hal for a quick bite to eat.

Captain Venger smiles slightly in response, "Of course Commander, and I wouldn't expect anything less from you.  You are dismissed."

As Carter left she sat back in her chair and thought of their conversation.  She remembered those evaluations.  How many ways had she thought of to get out of them?  Of course he probably remembered most of them.  That just means I'll have to come up with a few new ones... The final note she made to herself, before returning to her work, was to keep him and the CMO as far apart as possible.

Commander Knox stepped into the Captains away room as the new Officer departed.

" Excuse me Captain you have a momment I would like to report something. "

Standing at attention till Captain venger gave a reply when he heard the Security report. Figuring this would not take long he would be on his way there when he was finished.

"Of course Commander, but unless it is truly important I'm not very interested in it, since I am not on duty.  So what is it that you would like to report."

Captain Venger remained in her chair and waited for Knox to state his purpose.

Hawke had grabbed a slice of pizza and and a can of beer. He wasn't technically supposed to be drinking on duty, but a single beer wasn't going to affect him that badly. Add to it that this stuff was "synthohol" i.e. would not get him smashed, he was fairly sure he'd be okay. In fact, he'd flown ships after having imbibed something like six. If there was one thing he'd learned how to do, it was how to fly when he was drunk off his ass. During his days as a pirate, he'd been a fairly heavy alcoholic. However, a year or so of enforced sobriety on the Intrepid had broken him of the habit. Not to mention that his liver wasn't constantly threatening to explode in his face anymore. As he polished off the beer and pizza, he took the opportunity to look around the mess. Not too many people around, a rather attractive pair of NCOs from astrometrics and helm were about all. Hawke considered striking up a conversation but decided against it. Last thing he needed was to complicate his rather touch-and-go life with a female.

Finished with his snack he tossed the can into a recycler and headed back to the bridge. He half hoped that something interesting would happen, either with the ladies or the Brentarans or something else.

Then he remembered that "May you live in interesting times" was the old Chinese curse.

"No orders, beyond you getting some rest and sending regards to whatever family he may have.  Dismissed."

After Knox left, she checked the time and leaned back again in her chair.  She did not return to the PADD's but just sat there, quietly thinking.

Giving a sharp salute turned leaving the Captains ready room. Taking a short tour walking through the bridge. Exiting the bridge enterd the turbo lift and stapped Deck 2 please. Humming to life the turbo lift soon came to a complete stop as soon as it started.

Stepping out went to his quarters as he took out a data pad at his desk. Sitting began to consider his words in writing Colonel Macfarkanes next of kin as he was like a manny ford great drandfather to them by now. Turning for a second snapped Computer hold all messages but urgent till further notice.

Simply thinking tapped onto the com panle on his desk as it began playing a soft clasical music spreading thoughout the the room as he sat and thought.

Captain's Log;

With the end of the reception, the Brentaran delegation returned to their planet.  This signifies the end of our time here with them.  Starfleet has called us away to other business, so we will be spending approximately two more days here before moving on.  During that time, we will continue to exchange cultural and scientific information with the Brentarans, in hopes of creating a lasting friendship.

My impressions, from the reception, were obviously positive ones.  They seem to be a very reasonable people, with a genuine interest in peaceful scientific study.  I am eager to see the report Lt MacGregor will later submit on them.  Since he spent the most time with them, his insights will be the most meaningful to the Federation.

I believe that this will not be the last time we encounter the Brentarans.  There is still plenty we can learn from each other and I am sure that the echos of this first contact will be evident as new ideas begin to influence the galaxy.
