Hey all. Can anyone give advice or suggestions on window banging? Noah is four (diagnosed with moderate to severe autism).

He is getting bigger and I am worried about him breaking the window and getting hurt.

He bangs on the window when he gets excited. Also when he sees me outside. In other words, get yourself back in here woman!!

Thanks,
Lesley

PS Noah is nonverbal!

leslie you could put up plexy (sp?) glass so he can't get to the actual window. its plastic so he can't break it either. just anchor it well so just incase he tries to pull it off, or climb on it...it won't come off.

just a thought

Thanks Alisha. That's what we did yesterday. There is enough space in between the window and the plexi glass too.

I found out before I posted that the windows in the house are tempered glass so they won't shatter.

Hubby moved the flat screen TV up higher on the wall too. Noah was banging that against the wall.

Now, if he wasn't so hyper all the time (Noah that is).

Glad you got it all worked out Les. I racked my brain but couldn't come up with anything other than what Alyssa already said about plexy glass.

Good idea moving the tv up higher too ;) smart thinkin'.
I wonder what causes them to bang their head, maybe if we could figure that out...we could come up with a more permanent solution. Hmmm, tricky.

Good luck, ttyl

Ya...That probly is the best idea...Putting plexy glass on the window...Aside from putting grates on them....But those would distort the view.
Window banging is scary....I would be afraid of him banging too hard, and breaking the window, also.  I wonder....if maybe he likes the "sound"..the window banging makes?   It does have a different "sound", than banging on a wall.  Maybe he would like a drum...to bang on?  Like when he gets excited.
And good idea, moving the T.V. up higher.

Leslie,
This is a perfect teaching opportunity to teach him about danger and to introduce the NO symbol  (red circle with a line throught it) to label "no-no's" in your house!  Verbal or non-verbal - he can learn this concept....don't give up!

Q: When you go outside do you let him know you will be coming back before you leave?  Sometimes it is just the anxiety of not knowing if you will be back that is the problem, not necessarily that he "needs" to bang on things. He sees you, he wants you back, this is his only way of communicating that. You need to give him other tools.

If you need help....just yell!

You know the seperation anxiety? That is what he is feeling when you are out there.

Even typical kidds need to practice seperation over and over to get it. It is not something that comes naturally. They need to learn that when mommy goes away she comes back. This is something that is learned by observing and experiencing...over and over. Even months at a time.
